Dear Parents/Caregivers,
I have been extremely impressed with our students
at a number of public gatherings this term including
our School Leaders induction, the Variety bash
presentation, visits to the RSL and other
excursions. Positive feedback from the local
community as well from other places we have
visited is always great to hear and students and
staff are to be congratulated on their efforts.
Again last Thursday I was extremely proud of all
students who represented our school for the
Interschool sports. Students displayed exemplary
behaviour, tried their hardest and achieved many
places and personal bests. Many thanks to Mrs
Peters, Mr Magnay and Mr Peters for the extra
training sessions and to all of the parents and
grandparents who helped officiate, manage the
team and transport students. Great effort.
Staffing
I would like to congratulate and welcome the
following new appointments to our staff. These
positions will commence at the beginning of next
term:
Lucky Bay Bus Driver: Mr Bruce Beinke
Aquaculture Farm Technician: Mr Ettiene
Posthumus
I have also spoken with Mrs Potter in recent days,
Jan will remain on leave next term. She sends her
regards to all and we wish her well in her treatment
and recovery. In light of this, I will remain Acting
Principal and the positions of Deputy and
Coordinator will be finalised by the end of term.
Mrs Peters will be on leave from next week until the
end of Week 2 next term. Colleen’s replacement
will be the permanent relief teacher who is based at
Cleve.
End of Term / Assembly
Next Friday is the last day of term. There will be an
Assembly, run by the SRC on the lawn at school at
1:45pm. It is important that students attend every
day even though it is a short week. School will
finish at 2:20 with buses departing 2:25pm
Kind regards,
Jan Burton

HOT DOG DAY
This is being held on Thursday the 9th of April, the same day as Crazy
Hair Day. Order forms should have come home, however spare forms
are avaliable in the front office at school. Funds raised will help out our
Year 7 camp in term 3
SRC NEWS AND CRAZY HAIR DAY
On Thursday the 9th of April, there will be a Crazy Hair Day. Students
can come to school with crazy, zany and coloured hair. Prizes will be
awarded for the most best ‘dressed’ hair dos. . Students do not need
a gold coin donation.
In other SRC news - We will continue working on the school uniform
and we will hopefully see a new T-Shirt and shorts available in term 3.
We have decided that we will have 4 dress up days this year with our
first one being Crazy Hair Day. We have also decided that we will
fundraise for one charity, this being the Royal Flying Doctors Service.
The SRC would like to develop and implement a point system for our
house teams, so if you have any ideas on how students could earn
points for their teams please discuss this with your children who can
then speak about it with an SRC representative. In Term 3, we would
like to plan a Superheroes week. We invite input from community
about ideas of people who could speak to students about being a
hero.
SCHOOL NEWS
INTERSCHOOL SPORTS DAY AT WUDINNA
Last Thursday, a team of 40 students from the Cowell Area School
participated in the Eastern Eyre Peninsula Area School Sports
Association Carnival at Wudinna. Students must be commended for
their brilliant attitude and efforts during the day. Many personal bests
were set and individuals excelled with first - third places in various
events. It was brilliant to see our older students assisting younger
students - helping them find their events and encouraging them to do
their best. Also, younger students were prepared to participate in
events above their age range. Overall we came second in the Ball
Game Shield and second in the Intermediate Age Group Handicap
Pennant.
A huge thankyou to Jan Burton, Dylan Milton and our brilliant band of
parents and grandparents who supported our students and assisted
with officiating at the discus event, and ball games. Thanks also to
Geoff Peters and Steve Magnay for helping students prepare and to
Monique Linton for volunteering to wash the sports tops.
A black fold up chair was left in our area, if this belongs to you please
see staff in the front office to collect it.

LIBRARY NEWS
CYBER BULLYING
Library Closure
The Library will be closed Easter Friday 3rd April and Easter
Monday 6th April. Apologies for any inconvenience.
What is it?
Cyber bullying is when computers, mobile phones and
the internet are used with the intention of harming
another person. It can include email, chatrooms, social
networking sites, discussion groups, instant messaging
or SMS.
It includes communications that seek to intimidate,
control, manipulate, put down or humiliate the person
receiving it.
Examples include repeated negative
messages, sexual and racist harassment, belittling,
impersonation, trickery, excluding particular people
and cyber stalking.
How to keep your child safe
Investigate what your child is doing online

Communicate with your children




Use family safety software to keep track of what
your children are able to access online
Research your school’s and Internet
Provider’s (ISP) policies on cyber bullying.
Service
Report cyber bullying to your (ISP), mobile phone
provider or child’s school in the first instance, or
local police if you are concerned for your child’s
safety.
Block communications from cyber bullies.
Most
instant Messenger sites, chat rooms and email
accounts allow you to block messages from
identified people.
What to do if your child is being cyber bullied
Cyber bullying should be reported to your Internet
Service Provider and/or your child’s school in the first
instance. If you are concerned for your child’s physical
safety, contact your local police.
It is important to talk to your child and work through
the issue together so that they know they have your
support.
Cyber bullying can include behaviour that is against the
law and should be reported to the police.

By Munjed Al Muderis
One man's phenomenal tale of escaping a
death sentence in Iraq, surviving the Australian
refugee system and becoming a pioneering
surgeon at the forefront of Orthopaedic
medicine.
In 1999, Munjed Al Muderis was a young surgical resident
working in Baghdad when a squad of Military Police marched
into the operating theatre and ordered the surgical team to
mutilate the ears of three busloads of army deserters. When
the head of surgery refused, he was executed in front of his
staff. Munjed's choices were stark - comply and breach the
medical oath 'do no harm', refuse and face certain death, or
flee.
That day, Munjed's life changed forever. He escaped to
Indonesia, where he boarded a filthy, overcrowded refugee
boat, bound for Australia.
Like his fellow passengers, he hoped for a new life, free from
fear and oppression, but for ten months he was incarcerated in
what became known as the worst of the refugee camps, Curtin
Detention Centre in Western Australia. There he was known
only by a number, locked in solitary confinement and
repeatedly told to go back to Iraq.
On 26 August 2000, Munjed was finally freed. Now, fourteen
years later, he is one of the world's leading osseointegration
surgeons, transforming the lives of amputees with a pioneering
technique that allows them to walk again.
Walking Free is Munjed's extraordinary account of his journey
from the brutality of Saddam Hussein's Iraq to a new life in
Australia and a remarkable career at the forefront of medicine. COMMUNITY NEWS
