Ana Milena Hands, M.D. is Vice president for International Health Services and the
Multi-Organ Transplant Institute at Ochsner Health System in New Orleans, Louisiana.
In her current role, she is responsible for overseeing all business development, strategic
planning and operational components of these important service lines, while assuring a
multidisciplinary commitment to safety, quality, and the most current evidence-based
practices to the thousands of patients seeking health care services from around the world,
at Ochsner. Prior to joining Ochsner in 2005, she was a practicing psychiatrist for over 20
years in Florida and Georgia, where she also held various clinical leadership roles.
Dr. Hands earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology and Psychology from the
University of Monterrey in Mexico and received her medical degree cum laude from the
University of Zulia in Venezuela where she also completed dual residency training in
Internal Medicine and Psychiatry, followed by a fellowship in Adult and Adolescent
Psychiatry at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia.
In 2009, Dr. Hands received the New Orleans CityBusiness Health Care Hero award for
her work on integrating Hispanic immigrants with optimal patient care in post-Katrina
New Orleans. Additionally, under Dr. Hands’ leadership, the Ochsner transplant program has
been awarded with the Healthgrades Transplant Excellence Award for Liver and Kidney, most
recently ranked #1 Liver Transplant by currently has one of the best clinical outcomes in the
country for liver transplant, and has become the largest liver transplant program in volume.
Dr. Hands is an active member of the Americas Society/ Council of the Americas where
she continues to work on fostering an understanding of the contemporary political, social
and economic issues confronting Latin America and the Caribbean, while increasing
public awareness and appreciation of the diverse cultural heritage. She also serves as
advisor to the board of the Legacy Donor Foundation in New Orleans and is an active
partner of the Donate Life Louisiana Collaborative dedicated to save and heal lives
through increase education and awareness on organ, eye and tissue donation.
