Surgery Center Goes Cutting Edge With LED Lighting
Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic chose Cree’s CR22™ and CR24™ LED

Raleigh Orthopaedic’s new facility includes a spacious physical therapy
center spanning the length of the facility’s third floor. Using the CR troffers’

suit the use of the space. Higher light levels are used on the side of the
therapy center with exercise bikes and weights, while lower levels work well
on the other end of the center, where patients often lie on tables as they

lower light levels when patients are recovering.

Driving The Adoption Of
LED Streetlights In North Carolina
OPPORTUNITY
Through a grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), Asheville is the first city in North
Carolina to install LED streetlights on a large scale. The City of Asheville’s push to increase energy efficiency
and reduce the City’s overall carbon footprint has recently taken a big step with the replacement of traditional
streetlights - 175- and 400-watt mercury vapor and 250-watt high pressure sodium fixtures - with LED luminaires.
SOLUTION
Approximately 730 streetlights in Asheville’s River
District and Kenilworth neighborhoods have been
replaced with LEDway® streetlights with BetaLED®
Technology saving the city approximately $45,000 in
annual energy costs and reducing its carbon footprint
by an estimated one percent. An additional 2,913
LEDway® streetlights are being installed and the
City anticipates saving 50 percent in energy use and
maintenance avoidance due to the LED upgrade.
The total upgrade of 3,643 LEDway® streetlights is
projected to result in savings of $260,000 annually.
“The upgrade to LED streetlights represents one of
the most exciting developments since the Office of
Sustainability was created three years ago to examine
ways to reduce the City of Asheville’s energy use,”
said Maggie Ullman, energy coordinator with the City’s
Office of Sustainability. “It reaffirms Asheville’s role as
a leader in carbon footprint reduction.”

BENEFITS
In addition to energy and cost savings, this LED
installation also reduces glare and light pollution
which adheres to the 2008 lighting ordinance
approved by the City Council. In 2009, the Asheville
City Council unanimously approved using Energy
Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants, part of
the ARRA, to fund efficiency initiatives, including
the first phase of the streetlight replacement. The
revolving fund will roll energy savings back into
the City’s green and efficiency initiatives. Progress
Energy, which serves the City of Asheville, offers
customers a rate schedule for LED streetlights.
The special rates, approved by the N.C. Utilities
Commission, o.er customers the option of renting or
owning LED lighting fixtures and reflect the energy
cost savings of LED technology.

Penn State University study reports
perception of whiteness and color
rendering effects of Soraa LED lighting
Fremont, Calif. -- Soraa, the world leader in GaN on GaN™ LED technology, announced new
psychophysical research proving that whiteness and color rendering have a strong effect on the
perception of energy-efficient LED lighting. The study was approved by an Institutional Review
Board and led by Kevin Houser at Penn State University.
Compared with conventional blue-based LEDs, study participants overwhelmingly preferred
the whiteness and color rendering of Soraa’s full visible spectrum lamps with Violet-Emission
3-Phosphor (VP3) technology. Like conventional electric light sources such as incandescent
and halogen lamps, Soraa’s lamps emit full visible spectrum light which renders warm, saturated
colors—including important colors like reds and bright greens. Furthermore, these lamps
excite Optical Brightening Agents (OBAs) in white objects like clothing, paper and plastics,
making them look intentionally whiter. However, in their race to create maximally efficient, cheap
products, most LED manufacturers skipped parts of the spectrum. This has resulted in blue-LED
based lighting products that cannot truly render whiteness or colors.
Uniquely, Soraa’s full visible spectrum lamps with VP3 Natural White are engineered to emit all
colors of the rainbow, including violet, which excites OBAs and perfectly renders whites. The
research study at Penn State showed that the vast majority of participants preferred objects
rendered under Soraa’s full visible spectrum light over standard LED light that lacked the short
wavelength range of the spectrum. In fact, whether looking at a white dress shirt or their own
and color rendering effects of Soraa LED lighting smile, 90% of users preferred the whiteness
rendering provided by Soraa’s lamps. As for colors, study participants commented that colors
were more saturated, vibrant and attractive under Soraa’s full visible spectrum LED lamps
with VP3 Vivid Color (color rendering index (CRI) of 95 and R9 of 95) versus the blue-based
LED lamps with a standard CRI of 85 and R9 of 0. The research showed that the company’s
VP3 technology rendered colors with high fidelity and no change in saturation; and the colors
accurately matched the reference halogen lamp. This was true not only for colored objects, but
also for participants’ skin complexions.
There are those who’ve asked: does color and whiteness rendering really matter? Well, it does,
and we now have the data to prove it,” said Mike Krames, CTO of Soraa.
“Because all of our lamps render the entire visible spectrum, white fabrics and paper goods pop,
plastics are brilliant and people’s smiles are whiter, and colors are more natural and beautiful.
That’s good news for consumers and retailers, who want and deserve the enormous economic
and environmental benefits of LED lighting, but are unwilling to sacrifice the sales benefits of
excellent light quality in return.”

San Diego State University
realizes 50% energy improvement
with GE lighting upgrade

THE SITUATION
Founded in 1897, San Diego State University (SDSU) is a public research
university with 34,000 students enrolled at its campus in San Diego,
Calif. SDSU strives to be an environmentally responsible institution by
implementing programs “to increase its energy efficiency, reduce its water
consumption and institute ‘green’ practices where possible.”
THE SOLUTION
SDSU enrolled GE’s Lumination™ ET Series LED Luminaires in classrooms
in three buildings on campus. The 2’x2’ recessed LED troffers were
installed in interactive classrooms in the Adams Humanities Building and
in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies. The University also
constructed a new 3,000-square-foot anatomy lab using GE’s LED fixture
that produces a perfectly even glow when lit, but appears completely free
of a visible light source while off.
“We’re seeing about a 50% energy improvement in rooms where we
replaced old fluorescent fixtures with Lumination LED troffers for classroom
lighting. Students have also commented that the classrooms feel more
open and spacious since the switch. Overall it was a hassle-free transition
