3 rd Principal`s Letter - Anglo

Anglo-Chinese School (Junior)
A Methodist Institution (Founded 1886)
5 May 2015
Dear Parents/Guardian
Early this term, we were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew. As
the founding father of Independent Singapore, Mr Lee had been pivotal in shaping the
course of our nation’s history. He dedicated his life to the building of a prosperous and
cohesive country where Singaporeans are able to pursue the ideals of democracy, justice,
peace, progress and equality.
The passing of Mr Lee is a deep loss to all of us. All pupils and staff were involved in various
activities which included an observance ceremony to pay homage to Mr Lee. We were also
able to send a group of representatives from the school community to Parliament House to
pay our last respects to Mr Lee. In the classrooms, there were conversations to facilitate
deeper engagement and consolidation of pupil reflection on the passing of Mr Lee Kuan
Yew. They learnt about Mr Lee as a person, his contributions to Singapore, and the attitudes
and values that guided him in his work towards nation-building. May we continue to be
inspired by Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s commitment to serve our nation and reflect on how we can
build on Mr Lee’s legacy and contribute to our nation.
Our refined school vision - Every ACSian a young gentleman of Character, ready for the
Future to Lead and to Serve – has gained much traction in areas of service to God, country
and community. This aligns with our ACS heritage, traditions as well as School values of
Love and Loyalty as we nurture greater rootedness and faithfulness in young gentlemen of
character who will take the lead in a spirit of service for the greater good of society.
International Friendship Day @ ACS Junior
Apart from the other activities that were ongoing as part of International Friendship Day
2015, the main event on 10 April was an International Fiesta where our boys had an
opportunity to sample food of various cultures and play some games. At the same time, we
also raised funds for the Compassion Fund, an organisation which supports children from
low-income families in crisis.
Some of our Primary 6 boys also supported the event by guiding the Primary One and Two
pupils around at the Fiesta. It was heartening to see the “Big Boys” guiding the younger
children, ensuring that they were not only safe but also had the opportunity to fully
participate in the games. We are truly grateful and appreciative of our parent volunteers and
staff who spared no effort to make IFD 2015 a meaningful event for all our boys.
Lunar New Year Hong Bao Blessings Project 2015
ACSJ participated in the 2015 Lunar New Year Hong Bao Blessings Project, a fund-raising
project for the needy and disadvantaged clients of TOUCH Community Services. We raised
a total of $12,885.00 and are told that the sum will go a long way in helping children from
low-income or single-parent families, youth-at-risk, needy families, people with special and
healthcare needs, and the frail elderly. It was a wonderful opportunity for both staff and
pupils to share our love with the less fortunate during the festive season.

Please also take note of the following:
Road Safety Matters
Pupils and parents/guardians walking to the School are to use the appropriate traffic light
and zebra crossings and to enter the School via Gate Number 3. Please do not walk across
the Parade Square as vehicles will be moving in and out of the School.
During peak traffic periods such as arrival and dismissal times, pupils arriving to school by
car are to alight at the lay-by along Winstedt Road or the drop-off zone in front of the
Foyer/PAH. Our staff and security guards will be deployed to facilitate the flow of traffic and
reinforce road safety behaviour. Please cooperate with them.
Access to the canteen drop-off zone is only for goods delivery and for staff using the staff
car-park lots. Please remind your son/ward not to play in that area as drivers of trucks and
heavy vehicles may not be able to see them and other vehicles when manoeuvring the tight
spot.
If you are parking and walking into the Campus to meet or pick up your son/charges, please
park at Newton Carpark. Please note that vehicles must not park or wait along Monk’s
Hill Road, Winstedt Road (see below) and Clemenceau Avenue North as this will cause
obstruction to the flow of traffic and inconvenience to the residents nearby. Traffic Police
have been called in the past by irate residents and summons have been issued.
A car obstructing buses from turning into Winstedt Road from Monk’s Hill Road. As a result
of cars parking and waiting, the two-lane Winstedt Road only has one lane that is passable.
Teaching Blocks Out of Bounds
This is a reminder that the 3 teaching blocks as well as the corridors linking them are strictly
out–of-bounds to non-staff. Parents/care-givers are to remain in the Foyer when dropping off
or picking up boys from school.
Travel Plans
If you are planning to travel out of Singapore during this June school holidays, kindly keep
the school informed of your travel plans. A NIL return is required. This is one of our practices
to ensure our emergency readiness. You can make your travel declarations online via the
MCOnline Portal using the Parents' Account at the following link:
www.mconline.sg
If there are changes to your travel plans after your first submission, please update us again
by re-submitting the form online again. Please make your travel declarations by Friday, 15
May.
Meet-The-Parents and E-Learning Day
Meet-The-Parents and E-Learning Day is on Wednesday, 20 May. Pupils do not need to
come to school and they will be informed of their e-learning activities by their respective
subject teachers.
Supplementary and Remedial Lessons for Primary 6 Boys during the June School
Holidays
In order to better prepare our graduating students for the PSLE, our teachers will be
conducting supplementary and remedial lessons (English, Mathematics, Science & Mother
Tongue) during the coming school holidays. You will receive notice if your son has been
identified for remedial lessons. While these classes are voluntary, we would like you to
strongly encourage your son/ward to attend these sessions.
