WELCOME MESSAGE
Welcome to the College of Southern Idaho (CSI),
a regionally and nationally recognized progressive
comprehensive community college. Whether you are just
beginning to think about attending college, enrolling into
classes for the first time, or returning to campus after taking
a break, we realize you may have a lot of questions. With
you in mind, the Advising Center has developed the “First
Year Advisor” booklet containing helpful strategies, contact
information, and important enrollment resources that will
guide you in the right direction for college success. After
all, students are, and will always be, our most important
priority.
As you advance on your path toward educational success,
remember that part of your educational development
should include completing your goals and ultimately
graduation with your degree and/or certificate. College completion will become your friend and should provide opportunities

SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS (SAP)
5
What is SAP…???
U.S. Department of Education regulations require Title IV higher education institutions
to implement Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policies that meet the requirements
detailed in the regulations. Institutions must establish standards for SAP that measure
a student’s progress toward degree completion using both qualitative and quantitative
measures. The federal legislation/regulations clarify and strengthen these requirements.
What does this means to me….???
All students seeking initial or continued federal financial aid eligibility must establish,
meet, and maintain all three minimum SAP standards. The SAP standards are evaluated
and students are notified of their current SAP standing at the conclusion of each period
of enrollment. The three policy standards are:
• Maximum Timeframe: Complete your degree within 150% of the published
number of credit hours in your declared major.
• Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA): Maintain at least a 2.0 CSI cumulative
GPA. This does not include transfer credits.
• Minimum Completion Rate: Maintain a 67% college-level credit completion rate.
Remedial courses (classes with course numbers below 100) are excluded from the
completion rate calculation.
What are the consequences if I do not
meet all three SAP standards…???
Failing to meet at least one of these standards will result in SAP Warning, and if you are
unable to get back to Good Standing the next period of enrollment, you will ultimately
be placed on SAP Suspension. Students placed on suspension are no longer eligible
for Federal Financial Aid. You will only be reinstated for federal financial aid eligibility
consideration through a submitted appeal that specifically addresses documented
extenuating circumstances. If a SAP review makes it clear that a student cannot
mathematically finish his/her declared degree/certificate program within the maximum
timeframe, the student is placed on Suspension; there will be no warning period.
So what can I do to ensure that
I stay in SAP Good Standing….???
We recommend that you follow these guidelines, which will allow you to
complete your degree/certificate within a reasonable amount of time.
• Drop courses during the first week to help eliminate unwanted “W”s
(attempted credits).
• Take a reasonable credit load to ensure you successfully complete as
many credits as you attempt.
• Don’t withdraw from courses.
• Earn good grades (don’t fail courses).
• Take courses that are required or count toward your declared major
so that you can complete your program in the timeframe allowed.

“FIRST WEEK” COUNTS!
7
A large part of being a successful student at CSI involves being fully prepared for the
expectations of the semester, which includes meeting deadlines. Paying close attention to
the “First Week” of the semester will prevent you from being dropped from classes, will
help you stay on top of expenses, and will keep money in your pocket!
Here’s what you need to know:
Class Attendance:
If you do not attend the first class meeting time, your instructor may drop you for lack of
attendance. If you are enrolled in an online class, check with your instructor to complete the
attendance verification activity to avoid a class drop during the first week and negative impact
with financial aid awards. Don’t forget to check each class syllabus the first day of class so that
you understand the class expectations.
Tuition and Fees:
All tuition and fees are due on the First Friday of the semester*. Students who are unable
to pay in full can complete a Tuition Loan Agreement. The Tuition Loan Agreement allows
students to pay their tuition and fees through monthly payment amounts.
For more information go to:
http://www.csi.edu/prospectiveStudents_/studentServices/tuition_fees
Late Registration:
If you decide to add/drop classes, change to/from audit, or seek 100% tuition and fees refund,
you have until the First Friday of the semester* to make enrollment changes. Before making
changes, you should talk to your major advisor to ensure these class changes are a good fit
in your major of study. You will also avoid “W” grades, which count as attempted credits, by
dropping classes during the first week.
Note: Students can only add regular start courses, during the first week of the
term, with the permission of instructors.
If you receive permission from the instructor to add a course that has already started, you will
need to stay in close contact with your instructor to complete class attendance requirements.
To locate the instructor’s email address: Go to MyCSI,
search for the class you are registered in, and then
click on the “Course Details” area. Then, click on
the “envelope” icon which will provide you with the
instructor’s email address.
Books and Class Materials:
Getting ready to learn on the first day of class also means having books and class materials
ready to go. If you are receiving a financial aid award that can cover your books and
materials, the CSI Bookstore allows you to charge books on your refund amount a week
before classes begin.
Tip: If you drop classes the first week of the semester, the bookstore will not
exchange books that have their packaging removed.
*For summer sessions, refer to the CSI catalog for deadline details. www.csi.edu/catalog.

8 EAGLEMAIL/BLACKBOARD INFORMATION
EagleMail and Blackboard are essential tools for your success at CSI. Become familiar with these services
to keep the lines of communication open between you and CSI.
EagleMail is CSI’s student e-mail system that incorporates Google Apps. Each student who registers for a credit
class receives an EagleMail account. E-mail is the primary means of written communication with CSI students.
Students are expected to check their EagleMail account regularly. Not checking e-mail regularly may lead to
missing important information, announcements, or deadlines.

Blackboard is a Learning Management System (LMS) that allows faculty to share content and communicate with
their students over the Internet. It is used to teach distance education courses, as well as to enhance courses taught
in the classroom.
• Students must activate their EagleMail accounts before they will have
access to Blackboard.
• Courses and enrollments are imported directly from our student
information system after you have registered.
• Keep in mind that not all instructors use Blackboard and some
instructors don’t allow access to their courses before the first day of class.
Login information for Blackboard and EagleMail is the same as your MyCSI
login information.

COMPASS TEST-TAKING TIPS
9
The Computerized Adaptive Placement Assessment & Support System (COMPASS)
placement tests are designed to help you start on the right track with your educational
planning. COMPASS is not used to determine admission to CSI and you cannot “fail”
the tests. However, keep in mind that advisors will use scores to help you decide which
classes are best suited for your ability level, so take the COMPASS seriously. The
following tips and suggestions will help guide you throughout the COMPASS experience.
Before the test...
• Contact the Testing Center for a complimentary study guide resource. The
resource contains COMPASS sample test questions and study materials to help you
get ready for the exam.
• Check with the Testing Center to find out COMPASS testing hours, campus location,
and valid photo identification requirements. Remember, COMPASS must be started
two hours before the posted closing hours.
• The COMPASS test is un-timed, thus you can work at your normal test-taking pace.
On average, students take 1½ to 2 hours to complete the COMPASS so set aside a
few hours out of the day. If you have test anxiety or don’t do well on tests that take a
while to finish, you can request to take each COMPASS section separately.
• You may bring your own calculator, however devices with QWERTY keyboard
layouts are not allowed.
• More information about the Testing Center policies can be found at
http://www.csi.edu/ip/adc/testing/policies.htm.
• Get plenty of rest the night before taking the COMPASS and eat a nutritious meal the
day of the exam.
During the test…
• Read the directions carefully for each of the COMPASS sections and make sure you
understand how to take the computerized test.
• If you don’t understand or need further instructions on how to take the test, raise
your hand to get the attention of the test proctor. Keep in mind the test proctor will
not answer test questions for you, but will be happy to assist with test directions.
• Read the questions carefully until you understand what the question is asking. If you
aren’t completely sure about the answer to a question, still answer the question with
the best possible choice. Answering all the questions will provide better placement
information to the advisor reviewing the score results.
After the test...
• You will receive a copy of your test results immediately after completing the
COMPASS. Contact the Advising Center or your major advisor to discuss your
results and questions you may have about the test results.
• In addition to your placement score results, don’t forget to bring in questions you
may have about courses available based on your placement scores, degree interests,
and services available.
• If you feel that the test score in a specific subject isn’t reflective of your abilities, you
may take that portion of the test again free of charge. We suggest that you take some
time to review the COMPASS study guide in an attempt to improve your score.

PLANNING YOUR SCHEDULE
Setting up an ideal course schedule can be tricky; however, the following steps will make it easier.
STEP 1: Block out the days and times you are committed to other outside obligations such as family,
work, and travel time.
STEP 2: Remember the “2:1 Rule”. Most college courses require at least two hours of outside study for
every hour in class.
STEP 3: Use the chart below to help you decide how many credit hours to take.

GENERAL EDUCATION
General Education Core Courses
The general education core is intended to apply to all
degrees and certificates recognized by the State Board of
education (SBOE). A central component of SBOE policy is
the requirement that a student working toward a degree or
certificate must complete coursework in the general education
core.
In our rapidly-changing world, students need to understand
how knowledge is generated and created. They need to adapt
to new knowledge and opportunities as they arise, as well as
effectively communicate and collaborate with increasing diverse
communities and ways of knowing. In combination with a
student’s major, General Education competencies prepare
students to use multiple strategies in an integrative manner,
to explore, critically analyze, and creatively address real-world
issues and challenges. Course work provides graduates with
an understanding of self, the physical world, the development
and functioning of human society, and its cultural and artistic
endeavors, as well as an understanding of the methodologies,
value systems, and thought processes employed in human
inquiries. General Education helps instill students with the
personal and civic responsibilities of good citizenship. General
Education prepares graduates as adaptive, life-long learners.

TRANSFER GUIDE RESOURCE
www.csi.edu/transferguide
CSI has developed a transfer guide website to assist students in navigating the transfer process from CSI to another
regionally accredited college or university. The Advising Center is here to help you make connections to the
resources you need for a successful transfer.
Select this link and then find
the school that you plan to
attend and click on the Course
Equivalency Guide. Search for
CSI and then you can view by
