The Africa Institute for Strategic Animal Resource Services and Development (AFRISA), an innovation platform of Makerere University and the Government of Uganda (GOU) based in College
Of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity (COVAB), has introduced an innovative alternative model of higher education training aimed at creation of Small and Mediumsized Enterprises (SMEs) and increasing their competitiveness in the emerging markets. The Programmes will initially be run together with a number of partners who include; South Ankole
Diocese, Muhabura Diocese, Bunyoro Transformation Initiative (BTI), Masabaland Transformation Initiative (MTI), Ntungamo Transformation Initiative (NTI), Agency for Accelerated Regional
Development (AFARD) West Nile and Fort Portal Makerere Campus.
The Target Groups include:
(1) Farmer Communities
(2) Youth: Specifically targeted in this project because they will gain Skills, Science, Technology and Innovations for production and employment.
(3) Training Trainers for NGOs
(4) Local Government Extension Workers
(5) Animal and agricultural sector, Government programs and microfinance programs: To be provided with skilled and entrepreneurial human capital to act as service providers and nuclei of
socio-economic change in each sub-county
This Program aims at turning round traditional, subsistence ways of agriculture especially livestock production to modern, Integrated and commercial farming and turning households into
production units. Successful Participants will pass out with; (1) Artisan Certificate in Integrated Livestock Industry and Business; (2) Ordinary Certificate or Certificate of Attendence. The Programs
have been accredited for Makerere University awards under the auspices of AFRISA.
Training Venue: The training and enterprise nurturing program will begin at the following partnership centers; (1) Makerere Fort portal Campus; (2) South Ankole Diocese H/Q - Kyamate and (3)
AFRISA Secretariat. All interested applicants should pick/ submit application forms from/to these centers.

COURSES OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS ARE;
A) ORDINARY CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS (WEEKEND)
Participants will be guided to develop their Business Strategy
and Investment Plans (Business Plans), operational manuals
and imparted with technical competences to establish, develop
and implement their individual, group or home businesses as a
requirement for the award of this Ordinary Certificate.
Target group:
O-level Certificate with 3 credits, and pass in English,
Mathematics and at least one of; Biology, Chemistry,
Agriculture, Foods and Nutrition, Physics, Commerce,
Accounts, Entrepreneurship and Geography.
Courses include:
1. Ordinary Certificate in Poultry Industry and Business
2. Ordinary Certificate in Dairy Industry and Business
3. Ordinary Certificate in Feed Industry and Business
4. Ordinary Certificate in Fish Industry and Business
5. Ordinary Certificate in Pig Industry and Business
6. Ordinary Certificate in Bee Industry and Business
7. Ordinary Certificate in Wildlife Industry and Business
8. Ordinary Certificate in Leather Industry and Business
Fees: 1,040,000= per semester (excluding functional and
Enterprise Nurturing fees payable once).
Duration: 1 year (02 weeks of intensive training followed by
systematic weekend lectures and nurturing).
B) ARTISAN CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IN INTEGRATED
LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY AND BUSINESS
(Full-time / Weekend Program at AFRISA Secretariat,
Makerere University | Full-time Program at Makerere Fort
Portal Campus and at South Ankole Diocese H/Q - Kyamate)
Participants will be guided to develop their Business Strategy
and Investment Plans (Business Plans), operational manuals
and imparted with technical competences to establish, improve
and implement their individual, group or home businesses as a
requirement for the award of this Artisan Certificate.
Target group: Primary and Secondary School leavers and all
various professionals can apply. Participants will enroll as
protégé entrepreneurs to specialize in any of the following
program tracks:
a) Poultry Production And Entrepreneurship
b) Dairy Production And Entrepreneurship
c) Fish Production And Entrepreneurship
d) Pig Production And Entrepreneurship
e) Goat Production And Entrepreneurship
f) Bee Production And Entrepreneurship
g) Yoghurt & Ice Cream And Entrepreneurship
h) Beef Production And Entrepreneurship
i) Wildlife Production And Entrepreneurship
j) Soap , Candle and Honey Cream Making
k) Commercial Feed Production (Poultry, Pigs And Dairy)
l) Dry Season Livestock Feeding Technologies Including Hay,
Silage, And Hydroponic Fodder.
Fees: 1,257,000/= ( For the whole program).
Duration: 2 weeks of full-time intensive lectures and 7 months
of systematic weekend lectures and Enterprise nurturing.
C) SHORT COURSES
AFRISA offers a range of short courses for livestock sector
enthusiasts. This is aimed at knowledge acquisition and
all interested individuals intending to engage in Livestock
enterprises; production and value addition are encouraged to
apply.
Target Group:
Interested applicants must be able to communicate in English
and must demonstrate interest in the field of choices.
Participants will be guided to develop their Business Strategy
and Investment Plans, operational manuals and imparted with
technical competences to establish, improve and implement
their individual, group or home businesses. Participants will
enroll as protégé entrepreneurs to specialize in any of the
following program tracks.
