AFSC Youth Civic Engagement “If I Could Change the World” Spoken Word Project 2015 The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) invites school and youth programs working with high school-aged youth to participate in this creative project, using the arts to engage youth on issues of war, peace, economic justice and hope for the future. The “If I Could Change the World…” Spoken Word Project is organized by AFSC in collaboration with The Writers Place and spoken word artists. High school classes & youth groups are invited to schedule workshops lead by AFSC interns, local spoken word artists, and volunteers at your site to teach youth how to create spoken word pieces and communicating their passions for a better world. Students who participate in the training are invited to attend a Rehearsal Workshop to refine their work to be held Saturday, March 21, 2015 from 9am-5pm at the AFSC Office. Four to six spoken word poets will share their skills and mentor youth at the workshop. Youth will then have the opportunity to perform their spoken word pieces in traditional and nontraditional venues. Scheduling of “If I Could Change the World…” Spoken Word Project training session will begin the last week of January thru early March 2015. The Kick-off Performance will be on Saturday, April 11th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at The Writer’s Place in Kansas City, MO. Groups interested in hosting an “If I Could Change the World…” Spoken Word Performance in April and May are invited to contact us.
