History of the Social:
Sometimes Geologists
Just Need to Party
Our spring social goes back at least to
th
the 20 century when we had Dr
James Stout speak on Geology and
Wine of France in 1999. That social
was at the offices of Summit
EnviroSolutions, and it continued to
be there for many years. The former
home of the Children’s Museum and
office of the rail lines in that area, the
building
was
conducive
to
entertaining speakers, well lubricated
socializing, and dramatic raffles.
Our speakers through the years have
included Dr Stout on more than one
occasion, Dr Olaf Pfannkuch, Dr Kate
Pound, Dr Peter Huddleston, Larry
Zanko, Dr James Cotter, Dr Calvin
Alexander, and Dr James Miller.
We usually tried to tie the wine in
with the topic, which didn’t work so
well with Antarctica or Mars. Other
topics included the Lying Stones of Dr
Berenguer, the Great Diamond
Swindle of 1872, New Zealand’s wine
country, Patagonian Geology through
the lens of a Chilean Wine Glass, Ice
and Rocks—Baffin Island and Sweden,
Geology and Wine Down Under,
Geology and Terroir of the Italian
Alps, the Glacial Geology of Brazil vs
Minnesota, the Tale of two
Intrusions—the Greenland Minnesota
Connection, and the Geology and
Terroir of Wine Growing in
Minnesota.

March and April Speakers Talk
Real Geology
Our March speaker was actually
prevented from attending the meeting
because of an accident on I-94, but our
intrepid AIPG Vice President got the
speaker set up as a webinar, and Lucas
Evenson was able to project his slides
and provide commentary on ground heat
exchange in commercial and residential
buildings.

Our April meeting was copresented by
the Association for Women Geoscientists
(AWG), and they provided an excellent
speaker from their own ranks. Marian
Kramer is an oil geologist who proves
technology is wonderful. She works from
the Midwest while directing and
monitoring drilling in the Kern River Oil
Field of the San Joaquin Valley in
California.
Farewell to Graham
“Rudy” Ford, one of
the original founders
of the AIPG MN
Section and a highly
respected geologist
for MnDOT for 37
years. Rudy died
earlier this month at
the age of 81.
