It could be a roof top hazard, a stairway railing, a mezzanine floor hole or work from ladders and lifts. The presentation will cover regulatory requirements for stairs and railings. Emphasis will be on ladder set up and safety and applicable processes in the seafood industry. The hierarchy of controls and the selection of fall protection equipment, including calculating fall distance will be described. Biography: rience. Bill started his career as an ergonomic coordinator for L.L. Bean in Freeport Maine. After several years leading an ergonomic safety team at all four L.L. Bean call centers he joined the HR department as Safety Program Developer and worked on corporate safety programs, developing and presenting training and conducted site audits for the next 10 years. In 2014 Bill retired from L.L. Bean and he and his wife Susan moved to Alaska where he began work at the Anchorage Police Department, Bill quickly transitioned to the State of Alaska Department of Labor & Workforce Development (AKOSH), as a safety consultant. Over the last 10 years Bill has covered a wide variety of industries throughout Alaska, including oil and gas, seafood processing, city and county governments, construction, marine terminals, trucking, hospitals and other worksites. The research was conducted with focus groups in Aberdeen, Lafayette and Houston targeting drilling contractors and global service companies. The research centered on worker frustrations with existing PPE in the market and also incorporated gate keeper perceptions of PPE (HS&E and Purchasing) we will then briefly review the Ansell Guardian program which provides free assessments of PPE usages and provides comprehensive recommendations for safety improvements. Session #10 Process Safety Management at Fish Processing Plants – Part 1 Presenter: Caroline Roy, MA, Heather Coffman, BS, AKOSH In 29 CFR 1910.119 Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals a process is any activity involving a highly hazardous chemical including any use, storage, manufacturing, handling, or the on-site movement of such chemicals, or combination of these activities. The threshold quantity (TQ), the amount necessary to be covered by the PSM standard, for Anhydrous Ammonia is 10, 000 pounds. Anhydrous ammonia is a common chemical used in fish processing plants. This presentation will review the Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals Standard 29 CFR 1910.119 and identify the specific sections of the standard that result in common violations at fish processing plants. In the projects / sites she has visited in her career, the recognition of hazards is the largest risk she has identified – of those unrecognized hazards – the lack of knowledge in chemical safety is at the top of the list.
