10 May 14, 2015 www.alamedasun.com Alameda Sun Local Company Wins Technology Industry Honors Dennis Evanosky Last week technology industry experts recognized that an Alameda-based start-up company is making the world a safer place. “Liquidity,” which manufactures water-purification products based on a membrane technology, came home from TechCrunch Disrupt in New York with an impressive trophy and the $50,000 grand prize for its “Naked Filter.” The company’s prize-winning entry is the result of more than 15 years of research and development at Stony Brook University on the north shore of Long Island and at the company’s Marina Village headquarters. Naked Filter is an electro-spun, bacteria-retentive membrane that serves as a portable water filtration system. According to the company, Naked Filter is the first product to offer technology that creates “naked water,” free of bacteria, added chemicals and odor. The company says that the filter “provides high-quality bacterial filtration at flow rates not possible in the past.” The filter acts like a colander that physically removes disease-causing bacteria like salmonella, E. coli, typhoid, and cholera. The filter also rids drinking water of cryptosporidium, one of the leading causes of waterborne disease, and protozoan cysts such as giardia. In doing so the filter provides drinking water that meets standards that the Environmental Protection Agency has set for bacteria and cyst removal. “Our vision is to provide convenient and effective consumer water treatment products to the billion people worldwide who currently lack consistent access to safe water,” said the company’s founder and CEO Victor Hwang. “Alameda is a great base for us to change the world,” Hwang said. “It’s a great community and has the infrastructure we need. Over time, we hope to grow our operations as we reach more customers.” Naked Filter won top honors at TechCrunch Disrupt, a highly regarded technology event that identifies The filter acts like a colander that physically removes disease-causing bacteria. and introduces new and emerging companies that are changing the landscape of mobile, web and manufacturing technology. Out of hundreds of applicants, Liquidity became one of the event’s 24 “battlefield startups.” Liquidity’s staff presented its Naked Filter on stage in front of a panel of expert judges, the press and a live and online audience. Liquidity was selected as the overall winner and took home the grand prize of $50,000 and the event’s Disrupt Battlefield trophy. “We are both deeply honored and ecstatic to win this incredible industry recognition,” said Hwang. He said that his company has the Courtesy photo resolve to make Naked Filter a Using a “Naked Filter,” people can fill their bottles with tap water or scoop up fresh product that can help solve the problem of the lack of safe drinking water right out of a stream and drink it straightaway.
