Fundraising Activities
The Mastick Senior Center Advisory Board
(MSCAB) is the active administrative advisory
committee for the Center. MSCAB members
along with Center volunteers are instrumental
in facilitating various fundraising programs to
generate revenue to offset services and facility
maintenance expenses.

Day Light Saving Time Ends
Sunday, November 2, marks the ending of
Day Light Saving Time. Remember to set
clocks back one hour. This is also a good time
to replace batteries in smoke and carbon
monoxide detectors, remote controls, and other
electronic devices. Also, consider rotating or
assembling disaster supplies. Note: Recycle
used batteries at Mastick Senior Center or
contact Alameda County Industries (ACI) at
(510) 483-1400.

Welcome Edward Kallas,
Recreation Services Specialist
Ed Kallas has joined the Alameda Recreation
and Park Department and will serve as the
Recreation Services Specialist at Mastick
Senior Center. He has worked in the field of
Recreation for over 20 years and brings a
wealth of experience to the position. Edward
looks forward to meeting you and is available
Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30
pm in the Mastick Office. Be sure to introduce
yourself and welcome him to the Center!
Computer Classes
Computer classes are offered from 1:30 pm to
3:30 pm in Room C. Register prior to class in
the Mastick Office.
Microsoft Word 2010--Advanced
Monday, November 3, 10, and 17, 2014
Cost: $30 (three-part workshop)
This course is a follow-up to MS Word 2010
and will focus on learning to create columns,
tables, text boxes, WordArt and other graphic
elements.
Greeting Cards and Mailing Lists
Wednesday, November 5, 12, 19, 2014
Cost $30 (three-part workshop)
Learn to use Microsoft Word and Publisher to
create greeting cards and mailing lists for mass
mailings to family, friends or business clients.
Prerequisite: Computer Foundations Course or
basic computer skills. Flash drive required.
Mastick Book Club
On Tuesday, November 4, Book Club
members will review “The Kitchen House: A
Novel” by Kathleen Grissom at 12:00 noon in
Dining Room 2. “Then Again” by Diane Keaton
will be reviewed on Tuesday, December 2.

PoleWalking to Maintain Balance & Mobility
Jayah Faye Paley, Instructor, returns on
Tuesday, November 6, from 9:30 am to 12:00
noon pm in Room D to teach PoleWalking!
Highlights: Improve balance, posture, and
endurance; Strengthen core muscles and
preserve joints; and Reduce risk and fear of

The 36 Annual Holiday Boutique is at the
Veteran’s Memorial Building, 2203 Central
Ave., on Friday, November 7, from 12:00
noon to 8:00 pm and Saturday, November 8,
from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission is free.
Proceeds benefit the Leisure Club, a recreation
program for developmentally disabled adults
sponsored by the Alameda Recreation & Park
Department.
FREE—Secrets of Natural Walking—FREE
John Benko, Volunteer Instructor, returns on
Saturday, November 8, at 10:00 am in Room
D to introduce the Secrets of Natural Walking.
Natural Walking activates the reflexology
zones and energy meridians in the body.
Benefits include reduced back, joint and knee
pain, straightening of posture, improved sugar
and cholesterol levels, and more. Register in

American Sign Language (ASL)
Keep your brain sharp and fingers nimble with
ASL. Sheila Holmes, Instructor, will teach you
alphabetic and numeric fingerspelling, shapes,
greetings, simple sentences and games. The
class cost is $20. Classes are offered on
Mondays beginning November 10, in Room D
as follows: Beginning (Class #13824) from
2:00 pm to 3:00 pm and Continuing (Class
#13826) from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Register

The Last Gift Box—
A Present for Those Who Follow Me

Tina Cole Kreitz, Alameda resident, daughter,
wife, mother, sister, artist, teacher, and friend
has written “The Last Gift Box” a “to do” book
for individuals to plan and organize their exit,
removing the questions that arise when
someone dies. Take the first step by joining
Tina Kreitz and begin the process of putting
your affairs in order for yourself and your loved
ones. Tina Kreitz has a degree in Sociology, a
Masters in Clinical Psychology, and taught at

Music Appreciation
Join William Sturm, Volunteer Instructor, on

at 1:30 pm in Dining Room 2 for a “Musical
Grab-Bag”. Enjoy a review, discussion and
performance of composers featured in the

Support Mastick Senior Center!
Alameda residents pay a 7.5% Utility Users’
Tax (UUT) on utility charges (e.g., electrical,
gas, and cable)—however, there is an
exemption for residents that are at least 62
years of age or low-income. If you fall into this
category, you are eligible for a 2% exemption
on the UUT and have the option of designating
Mastick Senior Center as the recipient of this
cost savings.
Last year, $2,415.72 was
generated from individuals donating their cost
savings to Mastick Senior Center to fund
programs and services. Forms are available in
the Mastick Office. Sign up today!
Alameda Friendly Visitor Program Needs
Volunteers
The Alameda Friendly Visitor program is a
companion program to Alameda Meals on
Wheels and provides a weekly visit to
someone in their home or a nursing facility who
would benefit from sharing a conversation and
caring friendship.

Holiday Sing-Along in the Media Room. Join

Local Merchants offer Senior Discounts
Surprisingly, many local merchants offer
discounts to seniors. To help you save a few
dollars when shopping, we have created a flier
which lists the merchant’s name, age
requirement, discount amount, and designated
shopping day. The fliers are available in the
Mastick Lobby. If you know of a merchant that
provides a senior discount, please share the
information with the office so that we can
update the flier.
Community Band/Choir Holiday Concert
On Friday, December 12 at 7:30 pm, the
Alameda Community Chorus under the
direction of Kathryn Neal, and the Alameda
Community Band under the direction of
Michael L. Wirgler, will join forces to present a
glorious evening of holiday favorites at Kofman
Auditorium at Historic Alameda High School
(2200 Central Ave, Alameda). ACC will feature
the Alameda Music Project as a guest
performer. This young choral group is an El
Sistema inspired program at Maya Lin
Elementary school and directed by Joshua
Boronkay. The concert is FREE and open to
the public. Donations are accepted. For more
