Spring Egg Scramble
Set for this Saturday

The Rotary Club of Alameda,
the East Bay Regional Park
District and the Alameda
Recreation and Park Department
invite you to bring the entire
family to this year’s Splash into
Spring Egg Scramble.
This free “egg-citing” event
will take place this Saturday,
March 28, at the Crab Cove
Picnic Area at Robert Crown
Memorial State Beach, 1252
McKay Ave. Free parking is
available at the Crown Beach
parking lot at Otis and Westline
drives. Pre-registration is not
necessary.
Pre-scramble
activities
include the Mobile Fish Exhibit,
beach exploration, lawn games,
arts and crafts, photos with the
bunny ($3 per photo with your
own camera).
Activities begin at 10 a.m. and
the Egg Scramble starts promptly
at 11:40 a.m. in the different age
areas. Bring your own basket
to collect your goodies. Snacks
will be available for purchase
courtesy of the Alameda Youth
Committee (AYC).
In case of rain, all activities
will be rescheduled for Saturday,
April 4, at the same times.

Food bank aims
to raise $40,000

Each spring the Alameda Food
Bank holds its Spring Challenge, an
effort to fund the food bank through
the upcoming summer months. The
food bank hopes to raise some
$40,000 in donations from the business community, Alameda residents
and other donors to fund its food
programs.
“The support of the business
community, 150 volunteers and
thousands of individual donors
have been instrumental to the continued success of the Alameda Food
Bank,” said Sylvia Cunningham,
fundraising chair. “This year, grocers will donate more than 700,000
pounds of food that we, in turn, will
equitably distribute at no charge
to more than 2,000 low-income
Alameda families.”
Besides cash donations, local
business owners can participate in
this effort through a sponsorship
program for as little as $150, by
hosting a food collection barrel or
food drive, or by providing volunteer support.
Local residents wishing to
donate to the Spring Challenge
should make checks payable
to Alameda Food Bank and mail
them to P.O. Box 2167, Alameda,
CA 94501, or visit www.alameda
foodbank.org and click on “Donate
Now” to donate via credit card. The
food bank is a 501c3 independent
nonprofit and donations are tax
deductible.

I remember Easter Sunday
It was colorful and fun
The new life that I’d begun
In my new cage.
I was just a little thing
When they brought me
from the store
And they put me on the floor
In my cage.
They would take me out to play
Love and pet me all the time
Then at day’s end I would climb
In my cage.
But as days and weeks went by
I saw less of them it seemed
Of their loving touch I dreamed
In my cage.
In the night outside their house
I felt sad and so neglected
Often scared and unprotected
In my cage.
In the dry or rainy weather
Sometimes hotter
sometimes colder
I just sat there growing older
In my cage.
The cat and dog raced by me
Playing with each other only
While I sat there feeling lonely
In my cage.
Upon the fresh green grass
Children skipped and
laughed all day
I could only watch them play
From my cage.
They used to take me out
And let me scamper in the sun
I no longer get to run
In my cage.
Once a cute and cuddly bunny
Like a little ball of cotton
Now I’m grown up and forgotten
In my cage.
I don’t know what went wrong
At the home I did inhabit
I just grew to be a rabbit
In my cage.
But they’ve brought me
to the pound
I was once loved and enjoyed
Now I wait to be destroyed
In my cage.
