Garden Tour Shows off Water
Conservation, Benefits Shelter
Sun Staff Reports
On Sunday, May 17, Alameda
Support Foundation (ASF), together with the Friends of the Alameda
Animal Shelter (FAAS), will be holding the first “Now That Your Lawn
Is Gone” Garden Tour. The tour is
an opportunity to visit more than
20 homes in Alameda that have
removed their traditional front
lawns in favor of more climatefriendly alternatives. These include
vegetables, stone sculptures, and
Mediterranean and native plants.
There will also be a raffle and
plant sale as part of the event. All
proceeds from the event will go to
supporting the animals at FAAS.
“This event couldn’t be more
timely with the drought that
California is facing,” said ASF founder Les Hilger. “Gov. Brown has asked
all households to reduce water
usage by 25 percent and also plans
on replacing 50 million square feet
of lawn throughout the state as part
of this conservation order.”
The tour shows that through
good design and careful plant
choices anyone can have an attractive front yard while still making
responsible water conserving
choices.
Pet lovers can support the
local shelter while enjoying a tour
of beautiful gardens and learning
about water-conserving steps anyone can take. Garden lovers can
learn about the important work
FAAS is doing and the pets currently available for adoption.
Participants will receive a curated list of plants as well as information from StopWaste.org on how to
properly sheet mulch lawns. East
Bay MUD has rebates available for
those who do decide to remove
their lawns.
Tickets cost $20 per person and
must be purchased in advance at
FAAS, 1590 Fortmann Way.
