FAMILIES NEEDED
Continued from page 11
There was one final, seemingly
impossible option — to try the newest venue on Park Street, Capone’s
Speakeasy.
Due to our limited funds we
sheepishly — fedora in hand —
approached Mark Strachan with our
request for the use of his cool and
beautiful lounge for a high school
cast party. The request was met
with an enthusiastic “yes.”
Despite our financial limitations,
and the need to close the lounge on
a Sunday night for the private party,
Capone’s provided the perfect
venue for the cast. The students
came dressed for the night and
danced for three hours straight. It
was a wonderful and truly memorable evening for the students.
Thank you, Mark, and the team
at Capone’s, for your generosity,
flexibility and willingness to help
create an extra special celebration
for the cast and crew of Alameda
High’s Guys and Dolls!

Editor:
After watching our decision makers flounder over what to do about
the harbor seals at Alameda Point,
hearing my neighbor explain his
theories about the mysterious bird
goo and watching a fairly systematic
tree-removal campaign going on, it
dawned on me that people here in
a nearly completely developed city
may not recognize that Alameda’s
environment is still sensitive.
It is my opinion that even though
our forefathers may have paved and
polluted the majority of this place,
that doesn’t mean we don’t have
to be kind and respectful to the
few remaining furry and feathered
neighbors who share our Island.
I’m sure developers and the
powers that be would much rather
not have to deal with pesky details
like the least tern. There seems to
be some idea that nature preserves
don’t generate income. Maybe
there isn’t a big conspiracy, but
wildlife creatures can’t speak for
themselves. Let this letter speak for
them. They need a home, too.

Each year the Alameda Museum
hosts a luncheon fundraiser that
includes the official appointment
of the museum board of directors.
The luncheon was well attended, with Mayor Trish Spencer on
hand to swear in the new officers.
More than 90 museum members,
docents and volunteers attended
the delicious meal held on the
fourth floor of the Masonic Hall.
Among the changes to the
board this year is the appointment
of Alameda Sun co-publisher and
historian Dennis Evanosky to the
position of president and local
graphic designer Valerie Turpen to
the position of Secretary.
Attendees were treated to a
poem written and read by the city’s
Poet Laureate, Julia Park Tracey.

WETA may well have followed
the letter of the law, but unlike other
projects in the city, public outreach
by the city was practically nonexistent, and the project moved ahead
under the radar without community
approval.
The city can and should do a better job of notifying the public about
major projects that will affect their
community. We have the right to
comment on these projects before
they are green-lighted by city staff.
