ALEXANDRA PUBLIC SCHOOL 905.685.5489 MARCH 2015 Message from Ms. Currie…….. We have past the halfway point of the 2014-2015 school year. Staff members are spending many extra hours attending meetings to continue to provide the best programs for your children, specifically in Math. The Early Release Day was used to conduct Professional Development for staff growth. What a great day!! As we continue to plan for next year, our Early Learning Kindergarten Program had an Open House on Thursday, February 5th. It was a huge success as we were able to meet many new students joining us at Harriet Tubman. If you have a junior kindergarten aged child, and were unable to make it, please come in to the office to register your child. It has been a very cold this year. On many days, students have not been outside for recesses due to the extreme cold and wind chill. Thus, it is important when they do get to go outside, that every child be dressed properly for the wet and cold AND have dry indoor shoes/slippers to change into every day. Students that are in need of extra warm mitts, hats, snow pants and coats are encouraged to come to the office. We have extra to share! A big thank you to our School council members and the many community members (Morgan, Tammy, Christine, Erin, Bobbi, and Sarah) for their ongoing support of special lunches, movie night, bake sale and the Dance-a-thon. The students and staff enjoyed all the extras in February!!! Finally, I want you to be aware that Ms.Carol Germyn will be returning as the Prinicipal of Alexandra on March 23 for approximately a month. I am so excited to have Ms.Germyn cover my Medical leave. I promise (again) that everything is ok and I look forward to returning to finish up the year. Thank you and I will see you in April! J. Immunization Information From Your Public Health Nurse Immunization begins in early infancy and continues throughout life. Your child will receive the majority of his or her immunizations between the ages of two months and six years of age. Please take a moment to check your child’s Immunization Record (yellow card) to be sure his or her immunizations are up-to-date. Immunizations work best when given on time. For more information on childhood immunization, including the immunization schedule, speak with your doctor or visit www.health.gov.on.ca. Niagara Public Health—Saving Cents Makes Sense! Saving cents makes sense! Simmer up a pot of scrumptious soup. There’s nothing like the arome of homemade soup simmering on the stove on a cold day. Fill the pot with your favourite vegetables, whole grains and legumes for a healthy fibre-filled meal in a bowl. The combinations are endless! Make your own stock using vegetables; chicken, turkey or beef; water; garlic and spices. A big pot of soup can cost little and go a long way. Cook a pot of soup on the weekend to enjoy for lunches or simple weeknight suppers. Source: www.dietitians.ca Simple Carrot Soup (source: Karen Le Billon author of French Kids Eat Everything, www.karenlebillon.com) 60 ml (4 tbsp) olive oil 1 large onion, diced 1 kg (2 lbs) carrots 1 litre (4 cups) of water salt to taste 5 ml (1 tsp) dried parsley and/or dill (optional) Saute chopped onion at low temperature for at least 5 minutes, or until golden. (This is the secret of the soup! So don’t rush.) Add carrots (peeled or unpeeled, you decide) and raise the temperature to medium-high heat, and saute for 2 minutes. Add water. Cook at a gentle rolling boil until carrots are soft (about 8 to 10 minutes). Remove from heat, add herbs, and puree until smooth. If you like a thinner soup, add more water until it’s just right. Inclement Weather There may be times during the school year where inclement weather or other situations could cause transportation cancellations or school closures. At times when student transportation has been cancelled and schools remain open, the decision of whether or not to have children in school on that day rests with the parent or guardian. Should you decide not to send your child to school in the event that transportation is cancelled but schools remain open, or if your child is ill or late, please ensure that you call the school to inform us of your child’s absence 905.685.5489. The answering machine is available 24 hours a day. Press 2 to bypass the auto attendant. A key resource in any emergency is the DSBN Emergency Information form that you filled out at the beginning of the school year. Please let the school know of any changes in contact information or procedures you wish to be followed throughout the school year. Information on school closures is available on the DSBN website: www.dsbn.org, the transportation website: www.nsts.ca, and from all local radio stations School Council will be once again collecting Campbell’s soup labels. This program enables schools to redeem labels for educational materials ranging anywhere from sports equipment to musical instruments and technology. Thank you so much for your support.
