Alexian Brothers Lansdowne Village Voice April 2015 Deacon Dan's Reflections Welcome to the month of April! I have listed some important dates for the month of April below. My message for April is that joy does not simply happen to us. WE have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day. Welcome, and I want to send out a big THANK YOU to everyone as you have all made me feel very welcome in my new position as Spiritual Care Coordinator. I know that I have big shoes to fill, and want to thank Brother Richard for all his help with my transition, which is not an easy task as Brother Richard is so dedicated to Lansdowne. I hope you will find that although I am not Brother Richard, I am an Alexian Brother comember and have followed the charism and value of the Alexian Brothers for the last sixteen years. I look forward to working together with you all. We are not all alone, but a family that works together to promote and care for each and every one of us in our own unique way. If I may choose a passage from my favorite author, Henri Nouwen: Mosiac’s consist of thousands of little stones. Some are blue, some are green, some are yellow, some are gold. When we bring our faces close to the mosaic, we can admire the beauty of each stone. But as we step back from it, we can see that all these little stones reveal to us a beautiful picture, telling a story none of these stones can tell by itself. That is what our life in our community is all about. Each of us is like a little stone, but together we reveal the face of God to the world. Nobody can say: “I make God visible.” But others who see us together can say: “They make God visible.” Community is where humility and glory touch. Did you know that each resident has a phone in their room that you can call directly...no need to be transferred as you can call right to their bedside. To us our hometown favorites are the best. Others who come to St. Louis either like or dislike what we call home. Recently one of the late talk show hosts made an issue over a hometown favorite pizza called Imos and his dislike of the pizza or at least the Provel cheese on the pizza. St. Louis has always been a place where we do things a bit different. Perhaps it’s the rich history from so many nationalities or the history of being smack in the middle of the country or perhaps all the trade and people that come through St. Louis originally to get to the West. Whatever the reason we have always been a gateway so to speak of different ideas, products and food. We will explore of few of them here. Toasted Ravioli—One of hometown favorites is Toasted Ravioli. In the early 1940’s a chef by the name of Fritz working at Oldani’s accidently dropped an order of ravioli into hot oil instead of hot water. Quickly realizing his mistake , the raviolis were removed but not discarded. Mickey Garagiola, his brother is Joe, was sitting at the bar during the mishap and was the first to taste the accident. A little seasoning was added and it was dunked in a marinara sauce and soon the mistake became known as Toasted Ravioli and became a St. Louis treat! The word about this treat quickly spread and popularity made it a favorite in St. Louis in no time at all. Imos Pizza— Provel cheese was developed by the St. Louis firm Costa Grocery in the 1950s and is made in Wisconsin primarily for the St. Louis market. The cheese is not widely available outside the St. Louis area but can be made by combining Swiss, sharp cheddar and smoked provolone cheeses. Imos pizza shares one other tradition not found in other pizzas elsewhere and that is a thin , almost cracker like crust. Since Imos pizza can’t be easily folded like other pizzas it is traditionally cut into small squares which again is a St. Louis specialty. Pork Steaks— A pork steak is better know as a Boston steak or pork blade steak and they come from the shoulder of the pig. The second generation of Schucks owners, Jim Lysaught and Gil Smith here in St. Louis made the pork steak famous to St. Louis. Visitors to our city go home to their butchers and ask for the same cut and the butchers are puzzled. Gooey Butter Cake— Is a STL tradition and favorite. It is now available outside of the STL area but is not as much a favorite in other places as it is here. It is a dense cake made with wheat flour, butter, sugar and eggs and dusted with powder sugar on top. This recipe too was first made by accident during the Depression here in STL as a German American baker was trying to make a regular cake and reversed the portions of butter and flour. The accident sold so well that it continue to this day in almost every bakery in STL. Some upscale restaurants in the West now serve this as a breakfast pastry or “coffee cake.” Ted Drewes Ice Cream— This one is a STL favorite but originally started in Florida and closed in 1958 and has been in STL ever since. Ted Drewes has offered the tasty treat in many flavors first in three locations and now in two, one on Highway 66 (Chippewa) and one on South Grand. The one on Chippewa is almost open year round as they sell Christmas tree hands selected by the owner at Christmas. Prosperity Sandwich— This sandwich is open faced with turkey, ham, bacon and melted cheese with a cream sauce Other Items Developed Here That Are Widely Available Now - : Peanut Butter in 1890 by a doctor for people with poor teeth who could not chew meat The Slinger—Two eggs, hash browns, a hamburger patty and covered in chili St. Paul Sandwich—Egg Foo Young, Lettuce, Tomato and Pickle on White Bread Brain Sandwich—EXACTLY what it is Whistle Soda Ice Cream in a Cone—1904 Worlds Fair Invention Hot Dog on a Bun—1893 Colombian Exposition in St. Louis Iced Tea Hamburger Steak as a Sandwich introduced at the 1904 Worlds Fair with egg, salt, peppers and Worcestershire Resident Council Resident Council Meeting was held on March 17, 2015. After being sick all night and up from bed most of the time, I was still not sure I was healed. I was very tired and I cancelled my pre-arranged visit with my usual Wednesday morning friend. It was with great sorrow and regret I did this, for much time had lapsed since our last visit. God must have had great compassion for me, for he sent me a Celestial Visitor (who I didn't see but heard.) I was in my room the morning after my illness, and heard outside my door in the hall my third daughter sing in perfectly beautiful high soprano voice, Panis Angelicus. I knew she was not here. I had to phone her and tell her of all this. She was at home and said, amazed, “How can this be! I said, I thought it was you hoping to cheer me.” We had not talked together for a long time—my call broke the silence.. She had sung the song for me twice before—once in a small dining room and once in the conference room on Christmas Day with her husband and child, Emily, present. She used her smartphone for piano accompaniment. Her teacher asked her when they met, “ Why do you want to sing?”, she answered, “To Communicate.” She told me this by phone two months ago. She told me her teacher said, “This song is just right for you,” and she agreed. I heard her sing “Panis Angelicus”, Feast of the St. Agathy, February 3, 2015. My celestial visitor came to me after much suffering. My experience here recalls my mind to these words from the Bible; “Justice and Peace Shall Kiss.” The fact that my singing daughter’s middle name is Celeste is an interesting point to ponder in this happy story! Advance directives are legal documents that allow you to spell out your decisions about end-of-life care ahead of time. They give you a way to tell your wishes to family, friends, and health care professionals and to avoid confusion later on. A living will tells which treatments you want if you are dying or permanently unconscious. You can accept or refuse medical care. You might want to include instructions on • The use of dialysis and breathing machines • If you want to be resuscitated if your breathing or heartbeat stops • Tube feeding Organ or tissue donation A durable power of attorney for health care is a document that names your health care proxy. Your proxy is someone you trust to make health decisions for you if you are unable to do so. With this being said, The University of Missouri Columbia’s Missouri Quality Initiative will launch a National Healthcare Decisions awareness campaign on April 16, 2015. The informative campaign is designed to help educate nursing home residents, their families and employees of the facility about the importance of advance directives. Why should you consider? There is no better gift to give to yourself and others than filling out an advance directive form and having the conversation with those you love about your end-of-life care preferences. It’s not easy to talk about how you want the end of your life to be. But it’s one of the most important conversations you can have with your loved ones. This National Healthcare Decision Day will help you get your thoughts together and then have the conversation. This isn’t just about filling out Advance Directives or other medical forms. It’s about talking to your loved ones about what you or they want for end-of-life care. Whether you’re getting ready to tell someone what you want, or be of assistance in helping others navigate through this difficult conversation, this event will be a useful guide. The “gift of conversation” gives you the power to protect the people you love by letting them know what your wishes are and what you would want in case you are unable to voice them for yourself. So come out and present a gift to others by having this dialogue with your love ones and yourself. By Adrienne T.
