The Care Bag Movement—In the Beginning and Now
In 2011, high school. Senior Ian Sass, IB student at Algonac High School saw a need to help those that are not able to
help themselves…...foster children. He discovered that the system in St. Clair County, at that time, was not able to
provide the immediate personal needs a child required and most had to go to their new foster care home environment
scared and without any personal items or just a garbage bag to gather quickly things they might need. Ian created and
organized the Care Bag Movement. The purpose was to provide colorful, cheerful bags with personal items that would
help to ease the transition for these children during a most difficult time in their lives. He received a grant from the
Algonac Community Foundation in May of 2012 for $500, as well as $600 from the Algonac Church of Christ
who believed in this mission. He pulled in the volunteers of the ACOC Piece to Piece Quilters and sewers and volunteers of all ages throughout the community. His fellow students at Algonac High School soon rallied behind the cause
as well. Many, as Ian did, learned to sew, cut, and iron, gathering together to make a difference. Ian and those supporting him that year probably did not realize the full extent of the tremendous impact this would have on foster children
in the entire county for that year and the future. The cause has united an entire community, joining young and old to
work together, mentoring and learning from each other to take care of such a noble cause. At that time, the shelves
were bare of personal items at the St. Clair County Department of Human Resources to provide for our foster children. Now, they have fully stocked on and off sites 24 hours, 7 days a week, making sure our foster children in our
county and Sanilac County have personal items of hygiene and comfort that will make a difference in their lives in a
very difficult time for them.
Over 300 children a year in St. Clair County go into foster care, and over 1,000 are
already in foster care annually. Each child, age newborn to 18 years of age, have benefited from the time of entrance to foster care and as they transition from home to
home throughout their days in the foster care system from the Care Bag Movement.
The Care Bag Movement also adopts children at Christmas to make sure they have a
nice Christmas. Thank you for your part in helping.
Annually, the Care Bag Movement unites people of all ages and backgrounds to do a
Sew-a-Thon to make bags, blankets, pillowcases and gather personal items. There are also several collection days
throughout the year. At the 2014 Care Bag Movement Sea-a-Thon at Algonac High School, college students and previous high school graduates of AHS and past presidents of the Care Bag Movement, Ian Sass (Class of 2012) and Patrick
Zewatski (Class of 2013) joined the 2014 president of the Care Bag Movement, Jacob Nutter (Class of 2014), as they
continued to work, encourage and support the Care Bag Movement.; All of these young men continue to be role
models and have received award honors from Algonac High School and the City of Algonac for their community outreach and humanitarian services as a result of the Movement.
This year, a Marine City High School senior, Joey Kruesel, is the 2015 president of the Care Bag Movement. Joey has
had an active role in the Care Bag Movement from its inception in 2011 and has involved the Marine City Schools and
area collecting for the Care Bag Movement every year and participating in Sew-a-Thon activities.

Biology Field Trips and NHS Color Run
Ms. Urban’s Biology Class Projects
AHS Biology classes have been very busy outside of the school building! Students
have spent time volunteering at Algonac State Park helping to remove invasive garlic
mustard plants. On May 9th, many students volunteered at the annual Marsh Clean
Up. They also went on a field trip to the University of Michigan Museum of Natural
History and had a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum’s mammals collection. We had a short lecture from a U of M mammal research scientist about mammals and their adaptations and evolution, and spent time browsing the awesome
museum exhibits.
