Next week, March 29th, Palm Sunday is the “ingathering”, when we will be collecting your family’s United Thank Offering (UTO) “Blue Boxes” / Envelopes. Please, remember to bring them with you. If you intend to place a check in your “Blue Box” / Envelope, make checks payable to All Saints Episcopal Church (or ASEC) and earmark it for UTO. For those of you who won’t be with us next week or for the “forget-me-nots”, we will continue to collect your offerings throughout the following weeks. Thoughts from Fr. Hugh Since I wear my collar most of the time, I find that people – outside the church – talk to me and they usually end our conversation by saying, “Pray for me.” I always respond, “I will, if you will pray for me.” That comes out of a sense that all of us need all the prayer we can get. And I am always grateful for those prayers. For some time now I have been using a short prayer written by William Sloan Coffin as the blessing at the end of services. A number of you have asked for copies. So here it is: May God give you grace never to sell yourself short, grace to risk something big for something good, and grace to remember that the world is now too dangerous for anything but truth and too small for anything but love, and the blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with us this day and remain with us forever. AMEN. You can pray this prayer as it is written – for others – or you can substitute the word “me” for “you.” Either way, I am sure that Fr. Coffin will not mind. And you can end the prayer after the word “love” with AMEN if you choose. Again, I ask for your prayers for me and certainly, in turn, I will continue to pray for All Saints and for each of you. Hugh+ This second prayer is attributed to the Rt. Rev’d Clay Matthews: Disturb us, Lord, when we are too pleased with ourselves, when our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little and when we have arrived safely because we sailed too close to the shore. Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of things we possess we lost our thirst for the water of life and the bread of heaven. Stir us, Lord, to dare more boldly, to venture on wider seas where storms will show your mastery, where in losing sight of land, we shall find the stars. We ask you to push outward the horizons of our hope, and push us forward into the future in strength, courage, hope and love. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. If you are not receiving our weekly e-mail notices (called eComm), please notify the church office with your preferred e-mail address. 2 The Holy Eucharist Rite II 10:30 AM March 22, 2015 Fifth Sunday in Lent Sonate II in G –Minor George Frederic Handel (1685-1754) Larghetto ~ Allegro ~ Adagio Kendra Hawley, oboe Voluntary: ) Processional Hymn 495 Hail, thou once despised Jesus! In Babilone The Liturgy of the Word The people standing, the Officiant says Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins. People His mercy endures forever. The Officiant then continues Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Hear the teaching of Jesus, “Love each other as I have loved you.” Kyrie Kyrie eleison. Christie eleison. Kyrie eleison. S-89 Officiant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Officiant Let us pray. Collect of the Day Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 3 A READING FROM Jeremiah 31:31-34 The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt-- a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the LORD," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 51:1-13 Cantor sings the versicle—congregation sings the response SATB 4 Cantor sings the versicle— congregation sings the response SATB Psalm 51:1-13 A READING FROM Hebrews 5:5-10 Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you"; as he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek." In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 5 All Stand Sequence Hymn 337 And now, O Father, mindful of the love Unde et memores The final verse is sung following the gospel reading Reader says THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO John 12:20-33 People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. "Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say-- `Father, save me from this hour'? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. After the Gospel, the Reader says The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. The people sit. The Sermon The Reverend Canon Donna Lise Dambrot On Sundays and other Major Feasts there follows, all standing The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, 6 of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People The Leader and People pray responsively Officiant Brothers and Sisters in Christ, let us lift our hearts and minds in prayer, with humility, thanksgiving, faith, and trust. Teach us to use your gifts with wisdom and respect. To you, O God, We give our thanks and praise. You have given gifts of knowledge, vision, and creativity to your people. We give thanks for all whose gifts bring beauty, understanding, peace, and knowledge to the world though the arts, science, industry, and education. Bless our work, that it may be to your glory. To you, O God, We give our thanks and praise. We give thanks for those who have gone before. Thank you for the lessons in their words and deeds. Help us learn what they have taught, some through a life lived large and remembered by all, some by quiet faith and gentle ways, and all we name now, aloud or in silence (pause). We pray for those men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. We give our thanks and praise. Gracious and loving God, thank you for the blessing of All Saints Episcopal Church where we come together as a community of faith to worship and serve you. Help us now in our transition journey to better understand and discern your will for this ministry. Bring to us leadership that will enlighten, inspire and enable us to do our best work for your kingdom. Open our hearts and minds to help us love, respect and appreciate one another. Almighty God, grant us courage and strength in this time of change through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Officiant Blessed and merciful, you hear all who call to you. Gather our prayers to yourself, and gather us to you. Teach us to see with your eyes, to love with your heart, to give with your hands, and to live joyfully, humbly, and graciously, that others may come to your love through us, and that we may serve you in them, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. People 8 Confession of Sin The Officiant says Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept. The congregation may stand or kneel. Minister and People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. A Priest, stands and says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace is then exchanged Officiant People The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Holy Communion The Holy Eucharist, Prayer B Offertory Anthem: Steal Away Spiritual arr. Howard Helvey (b. 1968) Steal away, steal away steal away to Jesus. Steal away, steal away home, I ain’t got long to stay here. My Lord, He calls me, He calls me by the thunder, The trumpet sounds within’a my soul, I aint’ got long to stay here. Offertory Hymn 441 In the cross of Christ I glory 9 Rathbun The people remain standing. The Celebrant says People Celebrant People Celebrant People The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. You bid your faithful people cleanse their hearts, and prepare with joy for the Paschal feast; that, fervent in prayer and in works of mercy, and renewed by your Word and Sacraments, they may come to the fullness of grace which you have prepared for those who love you. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Celebrant and People Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. S-130 The people stand or kneel. Then the Celebrant continues We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or to lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." 10 After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Therefore, according to his command, O Father, Celebrant and People We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; The Celebrant continues And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. The following is sung S-158 O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. In Lent, Alleluia is omitted, and may be omitted at other times except during Easter Season. The Celebrant says the following Invitation The Gifts of God for the People of God. 11 The people immediately come forward to receive Communion. All people are welcome.
