HOW TO ENTER THE COMPETITION
Schools and individual children are invited to enter the
annual Jean Archer Award. The award encourages children
to make creative pieces linked to the history of Amersham.
The competition is divided into age groups linked to school
years. This year, for the first time, entries can also be small
models or crafts as well as be presented on A4 or A3
pieces of paper.
In 2015 Amersham Museum is exploring the story of
Amersham in the 1940s, with a special exhibition and
programme of activities throughout the year. The Jean
Archer award winners will feature in a special display for
Heritage Day in September.
For Early Years, the subject will be any Old Building in
Amersham or Amersham-on-the-Hill or a Special
Toy from the Past. This could be something that you
have at home or that you have seen in the museum.
For Years 1 to 6, please choose one of the following
topics to write about using pictures if you wish. You can
also send in a poem or make something. The judges prefer
to see original drawings and handwriting.
AMERSHAM IN THE 1940s
What was life like in Amersham in the 1940s? What sort of
jobs would your parents have done? What were the
houses like? What was life like for children? Can you make
something a child would have made in the 1940s? It could
be sewn or knitted, such as a toy or game, furniture for a
doll’s house or a small cloth or basket.
MY BEST TOY
Choose a toy that is old and special to you and your family.
Why is it so important? Who did it belong to in the past?
Would you put it in a museum? Can you make a toy that
children used to play with? Think about the materials it
might have been made of.
DEADLINE AND JUDGING
The deadline for entries to be returned to the museum is
Friday 17th July 2015. Prizes will be awarded in the autumn
term 2015 as part of the museum’s special programme of
activities for the 1940s project.

WHY IS IT CALLED THE JEAN ARCHER AWARD
Jean Archer was well known as Amersham's first lady
mayor and a keen local historian. She lived in the town
all her life and wrote many books about its history and
local people. She was also responsible for re-starting the
town band and helped to found both the Amersham
Society and the museum.
