LOS AMIGOS EN EL CAMINO ALEJANDRO CAMPINS 1 LOS AMIGOS EN EL CAMINO The Project Los Amigos en el Camino (The Friends on the Way) emerged as a collaborative exhibition celebrating both the richness of Cuban culture, and the spiritual unity of the Cuban artists participating in the exhibition, whose work is inspired by their direct experiences with the moment, or what some would call the direct experience of the present, the here and now. Each work represents an interpretation of the artist’s connection with limitlessness; a sense that time exists in the here and now; the sense that we are never more alive than in the second we realize there are no boundaries to existence. The artists’ common bond, reflected in the artwork in the exhibition, is their combined confidence in the unified nature of the work, that each piece is connected to the other, not only through the creative process of the artists’ individual mind, but also through creating a space of openness to the creativity of all of the artists in the exhibition. This concept, seemingly esoteric, is the common bond. Whether conveyed through the organic forms of Alain Aspiolea in his masterful large scale oil paintings, through the riveting black and white photographs of Nelson Jalil, which entice us with their images of a forbidden and still unknown Cuba, or through the compelling and serene work of Laura Carralero, each portrays the direct experience of the present, as well as the realization that despite individual qualities, we are all connected. LOS AMIGOS EN EL CAMINO LOS AMIGOS EN EL CAMINO Artist Statement Alejandro Campins is a Young artist, graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA). His work belongs to a new movement of painting that has developed within the emerging Cuban art. Campins, like other colleagues of his generation, is charmed by German’s Neoexpressionism and in particular Martin Kippenberger. He likes to use large formats and color planes, with a careless, almost scattered touch of bad painting. His complex color palette distorts the quality of a discourse that could otherwise be considered light, maybe because of its origin: patterns from magazines, newspapers, various catalogues, etc. Campins’ Pop mannerism seeks a difference in a visual poetry that revives an interior monologue that enjoys irony, skepticism and controlled melancholy. The flirtations with a national reality –in terms of text and phrases commonly used in political and ideological rhetoric or within the domain of popular rumor- expresses an art that wishes to transcend the delight in a pictorial tradition in order to hold a critical connection to its context. He has exhibited in México, Ecuador, Portugal, Italy, Denmark, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, USA and Cuba (National Museum of Fine Arts, Habana Gallery among others).
