Get to Know Elmet Technologies
Elmet Technologies, AAI’s newest acquisition, is a fully integrated manufacturer of tungsten and molybdenum products.
Founded in 1929, Elmet Technologies has grown to become a leader in supplying tungsten and molybdenum mill
products and precision machined components to customers around the world. Elmet Technologies recently had an
open house allowing visitors to tour the facility and learn more about the products they make. Here is a quick rundown
for those who missed the event.
Locations
Elmet Technologies is headquartered at their 220,000 square foot
facility in Lewiston, Maine. The company also has a 99,000 square
foot facility in Covington, Georgia and a 48,000 square foot facility in
Chengdu, China.
Why Molybdenum and Tungsten?
Molybdenum and tungsten are refractory metals which are known for their high melting
points, corrosion resistance, low vapor pressure, good electrical conductivity, and low
coefficient of thermal expansion. These properties make molybdenum and tungsten
uniquely suited to a number of applications including:
■■
FPD display circuitry like cell phone screens and LCD
TVs
■■
Ion beam line components for ion implant equipment
used in semiconductor manufacturing
■■
High reliability power electronics used in military and
other applications
■■
X-ray collimators and anti-scatter components for
medical imaging equipment as well as X-ray tube
components.
■■
High temperature furnace hot zone components
and heat shielding for furnaces that operate at more
than 1,000º C (1,832º F)
■■
Anode and cathode materials for high intensity
lighting applications. While the incandescent lighting
market is now in deep decline, when demand was
high, Elmet produced more than 1 billion light bulb
filaments a year as part of Philips Lighting.
The Manufacturing Process
Elmet is one of the few companies in the world to produce molybdenum and tungsten starting with chemical metal
powders. Here are some of the key elements of Elmet’s powder metallurgy manufacturing process:
1. Reduction of chemical metal powders to high purity molybdenum, tungsten, and
associated alloys
2. Pressing and sintering of ingots
3. Thermo-Mechanical processing through rolling mills, rotary forges, swagers, and
drawing to produce a wide variety of flat and round product
4. Industry leading fabrication, machining and assembly finishing services
This level of integration enables Elmet to maintain close control over the manufacturing process and consistently deliver
high quality products. Final molybdenum and tungsten products are guaranteed 99.95% pure and can be produced up
to 99.9995% pure for certain applications. Elmet also produces a range of alloys of molybdenum and tungsten including
lanthanated, potassium doped, Mo/W blended alloys, and others.
Future Growth For Elmet
Elmet has a proud history of reinventing itself to adapt to changing market needs and conditions through
continuous development of new products and capabilities. In addition, the world-wide market for
molybdenum, tungsten and other refractory metals is very large and there are many opportunities for
Elmet to grow and access new markets through R&D by driving efficiencies through the manufacturing
process.

MEGA Industries LLC Receives $2.6 Million Dollar Contract
from Facility for Rare Isotope Beams
February 2, 2015
MEGA Industries LLC (MEGA) was recently awarded a $2.6 million contract to supply critical components for the
Facility for Rare Isotope Research (FRIB), being built at Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing Michigan.
The overall program is estimated to cost upwards of three quarters of a billion dollars and is funded by the nuclear
physics arm of the Department of Energy. MEGA’s role will include the manufacturing of precision linear accelerator
RF components for the program.
More information FRIB
FRIB will be the largest nuclear research project in North America when finished in 2022 and will support the global
study of rare isotopes. This research will not only lead to a greater understanding of the origins of the stars and
planets; but also paves the way to more effective treatments for cancer and disease.
FRIB is expected to serve around 800 of the world’s leading nuclear scientists a year. The facility will accelerate ionized
atoms using MEGA’s waveguide down a 500-metre-long series of tunnels causing them to shatter against the target
producing beams of rare isotopes. This process is at a higher intensity than at any other facility in the world. It is
predicted the fragments could include thousands of isotopes never seen on Earth.
More Information on the Contract
Peter Matthews, CEO of MEGA comments on the reasons why MEGA was chosen, “MEGA received the award after a
merit based review and competitive bidding process. The award builds upon recent momentum here at MEGA and
opens the doors for future contracts with FRIB as well as other organizations.” MEGA expects this to be the first of
several awards they will receive as MSU completes this extensive facility.
Henry Downs, Vice President Engineering, comments that MEGA “Looks forward to working closely with the FRIB
managers and engineers designing and manufacturing components that are at the heart of this leading edge LINAC.
Our work on this project helps to further solidify our position as leaders in high energy physics.”

Innovative Boot-Drying Technology Undergoes Successful
Test by U.S. Marine Corp
Q1 2015 Press Releases
February 25, 2015
Biovation’s biodegradable, bioplastics DryRight™ product benchmarked to prepare for high-volume domestic
manufacturing and delivery in 2015
After months of testing, the Biovation DryRight tactical boot drying product has received positive feedback from the
United States Marine Corps. The testing resulted from a Broad Agency Announcement Contract received by Biovation
in June 2013. These strong results will lead to the finalization of product design and the commercialization of the
DryRight product in 2015 concurrently with the completion of a final field trial by the United States Marine Corps. The
development of this innovative product would not have been achieved without the support of Marine Corps System
Command in Quantico, Virginia.
Biovation is a technology design and manufacturing company that produces advanced, non-woven fiber products
with integrated anti-microbial properties for packaging, healthcare, custom advanced material OEM products, and
other specialty scalable applications. The DryRight product was funded, developed, and tested in close collaboration
with the United States Marine Corps to help them perform at their best.
This easy-to-use solution is rolled and inserted into a wet boot. Over time, the anti-microbial materials dry the boot
and ensure the foot health of the wearer. Poor foot care is a significant contributor to lost combat readiness. DryRight
is lightweight, portable, and prevents unnecessary foot injury while never needing to be wrung out or washed, making
it a necessary tool for today’s modern warfighter and peacekeeper. A single unit can be re-used between 10-15 times
with “recharging” (air drying) and is manufactured with greater than 50% non-hazardous bio-content.
DryRight provides the warfighter with a solution that sustains an optimum microenvironment around the foot that is
critical to top performance and long-term comfort. When in use, it provides maximum boot dryness in all foot contact
areas (toe, heel, top and bottom of foot) regardless of climate and weather conditions within 6-8 hours. DryRight use
results in the reduction of foot blisters and damp socks. Biovation has applied its extensive expertise in advanced
polymers, non-wovens, super absorbents and multi-component biochemical formulations to create a unique product.
Biovation Chief Executive Officer Kerem Durdag said, “The foot health of Marines during training and deployment is a
primary medical concern for the force. We have developed the DryRight to provide an efficient and effective tool for
Marines both in combat and training. Biovation is proud to partner with Department of the Navy on this important
project to protect Marines in the field.”
Biovation plans to establish a dedicated DryRight manufacturing line by April 2015, allowing orders to be taken for June
2015 delivery. Biovation is committed to the State of Maine’s high-tech innovation manufacturing economy by
implementing a world-class production line and creating new high-skilled jobs to support the launch of DryRight.
