Border Print Table Runner
The Table Runner requires a fat eighth of nine, shaded braid fabrics, 1½ yards of
border print for center medallion and outside edge, and one-half yard for binding.
The table runner made with the border print shown finishes approximately 11½" x
57". (Actual measurements will vary slightly depending on width of border print
selected.) All seam allowances are ¼". Read the entire pattern before beginning.
Step 1: Cut Fabrics.
From each braid fabric, cut 2 A pieces (2¼" x 6½") and 2 B pieces (2¼" x 8¼").
From the border print fabric, carefully cut three narrow stripes. Be sure to include
¼" seam allowance on both sides of the stripes. Set aside for Step 4.
Step 2: Make Center Square.
Make a Template C out of see-through template plastic, transferring all markings
from the pattern on Page 3 to the plastic template. Place the template on the border print fabric, centering the mirror line on the template on a mirrored motif on
the border print fabric. Also, adjust the template so that a line from the border print
falls just inside the dashed sewing line on
the long side of the triangle. (This ensures a
nice line or frame around the outside of the
finished square.) Mark a portion of the
design directly onto the template to use as a
guide for cutting the remaining pieces
(Diagram 1). Carefully draw around the template and cut the piece out. Cut three more

triangles identical to the first, then sew

them together to complete the square.

Following the color image, sew an A patch to the center square. Align the top edge of a matching B
patch with the outside edge of the unit you just
constructed and sew. Repeat on the other side of the
square. Repeat for each of the remaining eight fabrics.

Step 3: Sew the Braids.
Always sew with the new braid strip on top. Press seam allowances towards the new strip after sewing each seam.

Trim the sides of the table runner, aligning the points of the center medallion with
the ¼" line on your ruler to allow a ¼" seam allowance.

Step 4: Cut Border Print Edging.
Important Note: If you choose a border print other
than the one shown in this pattern, you may need to
adjust the width of Template D to reflect the width of
your chosen border print. Regardless of which border
print you choose, the angles on the sides of the template remain the same.
necessary, adjust the top strip so that the top and bottom design motifs match exactly. (If you have centered
a motif from the border print in the middle of the quilt,
the designs should match at the edges.) Cut the bottom strip following the angle of the cut edge.
Using the long strip you just cut as a pattern, cut a second border print strip, matching the design motifs on
the two strips exactly. On the wrong side of both strips,
mark the dots from the * side of Template D. (You
must flip Template D over to match one of the angled
sides on each strip.)
Make a Template D out of see-through template plastic,
transferring all markings to the plastic template.
Fold one of the reserved narrow border print strips in
half, with the fold in the center of a mirrored design
element. Place the bottom edge of the strip along a
long edge of the table runner, aligning the fold with
the center square's seam, and butting the edges together as in

template with the corner of the table runner. Mark a
portion of the design motif onto the template. Then,
mark the outer angle of the template on the border
print strip. Remove the template. Cut the border print
strip on the marked line.
Place Template D on the remaining uncut narrow border strip, matching the design motif marked on the
template with the fabric design. Cut two identical pieces. Flip Template D over, match the design motif markings with the fabric and cut two identical pieces. Mark
the wrong side of all four pieces with the dots from the
template.
Step 5: Attach the Border Print Edging.
Pin a long piece of cut border print to each long side of
the table runner, right sides together. Match the ends
of the strip and table runner, and center the border
print strips on the center seam of the runner. Sew with
the border print strips on top, starting and ending at
the dots, and following a printed line on the fabric.
Sew the D and D-R pieces to the table runner in the
same fashion, referring to the color image for placement. When all the pieces have been sewn to the runner, sew the mitered edges of the border print strips
together, beginning at the inside dot and sewing to the
outside of the strips. Be sure to match the design
motifs on the edging strips and pin before sewing.
Reposition the cut border strip so that the center is
once again aligned with the center square’s seam. Carefully pick up the cut side of the border strip and fold it
right-sides together so that the bottom corner of the
cut edge is at the edge of the table runner. (The wrong
side of the fabric strip will be on top.) If
Step 6: Finish the Table Runner.
On a flat surface, layer the backing (wrong side up),
batting, and table runner (right side up). Baste layers
together. Quilt as desired.
When quilting is completed, trim backing and batting
even with edges of table runner. Make binding strips
and bind using your favorite method.

The space between the dashed (sewing) lines on Template D should match the width of your
border print. If your border print is narrower or wider, make the following adjustments.
1. Place a piece of tracing paper over Template D and draw the bottom and side edges.
Include both the dashed sewing lines and the solid cutting lines.
2. Measure the finished width of the border stripe you plan to use.
3. Measure that distance up from the bottom line of Template D. Draw a dashed sewing line
line parallel to the bottom line of Template D that is the width of your border. Add a cutting line ¼" outside of that line for the seam allowance.
4. If your border is wider than Template D, extend the
short sides of the template along the same angles to
meet your new lines.
5. Transfer all markings to your new
template.
