Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion
March 29, 2015
Dear Friends in Christ,
Our Holy Week begins today with Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. As we begin these
Sacred Days, I would like to thank you for your participation in the various activities of Lent during
these past weeks. I hope that the spiritual guide, Living Faith, has helped you on your Lenten
journey.
The special days of Holy Week are considered to be our High Holy Days as Catholics and the
various celebrations are deeply rooted in the traditions of our Catholic faith. I invite you to
participate in the liturgies of these special days. If you have never attended the celebrations of Holy
Week, perhaps this is the year to attend either individually or as a family. The Holy Week Schedule is listed on the
cover and below and may also be referenced on our website, www.annunciationorlando.org.
At our Easter Sunday Masses, we will be blessed with many visitors. I thank you in advance for extending a warm
Annunciation welcome and hospitality to those who may be here from other faith backgrounds, other places or who do
not worship with us on a regular basis. I appreciate your patience as we celebrate our Core Value to be a Welcoming
Parish Community.
When you come before the Lord this week, please whisper my name (and the names of the Clergy and Religious
Sisters of our parish) to the Almighty. Pray that we are blessed with wisdom, strength and hope during these special
days. Know that we will pray for you, your loved ones and your intentions. We may not see each other every day but
may we meet each day in our prayers!
In Christ,
Please note: our Parish Office and Bookstore
will be closed at 12noon on Good Friday and
will reopen on Tuesday, April 7th. Thank you!
Very Rev. Stephen D. Parkes, V.F.
Pastor

Divine Mercy Sunday - April 12th at 2pm in our Church
All are welcome to this special devotion
~ Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament ~ The Rosary
~ Sacrament of Reconciliation ~ Divine Mercy Chaplet
The Message of Divine Mercy Sunday is that God loves "all of us" no matter how
great our sins. He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that
we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to
others. Thus, all will come to share His joy. We look forward to praying with you.
The Divine Mercy Novena: Jesus gave St. Faustina nine intentions for which to pray
the Chaplet beginning on Good Friday and ending on Holy Saturday.
Please visit annunciationorlando.org/divine-mercy for additional information
about Divine Mercy Sunday and links to the novena prayers.
Chrism Mass - Wednesday, April 1
Bishop John Noonan invites you to the Chrism Mass on Wednesday, April 1 at 6:30
p.m. at St. James Cathedral
Holy Oils Consecrated
The clear aim of the Chrism Mass is for the blessing of the Holy Oils used during the
Church year. These are the Oil of the Sick, Oil of Catechumens and Sacred Chrism.
Pastors carry these oils back to their parishes where they will be part of celebrations
for the coming year, beginning with the Easter Vigil. Whenever the Holy Oils are
used at a parish, the ministry of the Bishop who consecrated them is symbolically
present.
Priests Renew Their Commitment To Priestly Service
The second purpose of the Chrism Mass is the unity of all the priests of the Diocese
with their Bishop. All priests in the Diocese of Orlando are invited to concelebrate
the Mass and renew their priestly commitment.
Jubilarians Honored
Priests in the Diocese of Orlando celebrating 50 or 25 years of priestly service will be honored at the Chrism Mass.
The Triduum
The Triduum (TRIH-du-um) is the time of the Church year when we celebrate the passion, death, and resurrection of
Jesus Christ. This three-day celebration begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday and continues on
Good Friday with the Passion of the Lord. We leave the Church in silence, waiting to celebrate the glory of our Lord’s
resurrection. Then, on Saturday at sun down, the Church re-gathers to celebrate the final, and most grand, moment of the
Triduum: the Resurrection of our Lord.
Holy Thursday
The Mass on Holy Thursday is commonly known as the Feast of the Lord’s
Supper. This Mass is a time for Catholics to remember the Last Supper where
Jesus and his apostles gathered to celebrate
Passover. In the Holy Thursday celebration, two
ritual actions stand out among the rest: the
Washing of the Feet and the Celebration of the
Eucharist.
Good Friday: The Passion of th Lord
In this solemn celebration, we remember the Passion and Death of Our
Lord. The service is marked by several important rituals including the proclaiming of the
Passion according to John, the Veneration of the Cross, an extended form of General
Intercessions and finally, the distribution of Communion (reserved from the Holy
Thursday celebration of the Eucharist).

Excerpt from the Gospel
Mark 14: 27-31
Then Jesus said to them,
“All of you will have your faith
shaken, for it is written: I will
strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be dispersed.
But after I have been raised up,
I shall go before you to Galilee.”
Peter said to him, “Even though
all should have their faith shaken,
mine will not be.”
Then Jesus said to him,
“Amen, I say to you,
this very night before the cock
crows twice you will deny me
three times.”
But he vehemently replied,
“Even though I should have to die
with you, I will not deny you.”

Stewardship Reflections on the Readings for the Palm Sunday
The end of our Lenten journey is imminent. Have we altered our lives? Have we
rededicated ourselves? Have we renewed our covenant with the Lord? These are
major conversions and changes, and perhaps the best question we can ask
ourselves is quite simply, “Is anything different?”
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, “the real aim of Lent is, above all else,
to prepare us for the celebration of the death and Resurrection of Christ… the
better the preparation the more effective the celebration will be.” We have been
called to a conversion of heart.
In the few days we have remaining we must strive for some form of purification,
by some effort to reject sin and selfishness. As good stewards, we need to identify
something in our lives, someone in our lives perhaps, with which or with whom
we must reconcile. First and foremost we must reconcile with God; if we fix that
relationship, everything else naturally follows.
We have been given gifts through the Holy Spirit. This is a vital time for us to use
those gifts to build the Kingdom of God. St. David of Crete said this of Palm
Sunday: “Let us run to accompany the Lord as He hastens toward His Passion, not
by covering His path with palms, but by being humble and by trying to live as He
would wish.” www.thecatholicsteward.com
