How do I get an Internship? ● That is up to you! ● We can guide you and give your recommendations on internships, but ultimately it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to get an internship that best fits you. ● The best way is to go and introduce yourself to the person. Face-to-face contact is the BEST way to get ahold of someone. What do I need to know about the internship? Students are required to find their own internship. The internship is split into three parts: ● Career Centered Internship: 60 hours ● Volunteer hours: 40 hours ● Workshop hours: 20 All students are required to complete a mandatory 120 hours for 1 credit. Career Centered Internship 60-120 hour requirement ● Students will be expected to complete 60 hours within a field of interest. Students will act as if they are employees of the company and be expected to participate in hands-on activities to get the full experience of how the company runs. ● Students are REQUIRED to have a mentor for this experience. ● The mentor selected cannot be of relation to the student NOR can it be a teacher on the Andrada Campus. ● Students cannot be paid for the internship selected. Volunteer Hours 40 hour option 1. 2. 3. 4. Community service can consist of anything from: Helping out at a homeless shelter Cleaning up a local park Working with Ben’s Bells Throwing a local Blood Drive ● Students will need to get these hours approved by Mr. Still or Ms. Schweitzer. ● Although one, specific mentor is not expected, students are REQUIRED to have a signature for each hour of completion. Workshop Hours 20 hour option Workshops can consists of: 1. 2. Andrada guest speakers Off campus training/guest speaker events ● Although one, specific mentor is not expected, it is required for students to have a signature for each hour completed. ● Students are expected to put brochures, activities, pictures, etc. in their portfolio from the workshops attended. In essence, there should be proof of completion of such workshop. What is the role of my main mentor? A. As a mentor you will be providing an opportunity for students to fully engage in a worklike experience. Although you do not need to be with your intern at all times, it is expected that you provide them with direction on what they will be doing. B. Mentors will be responsible for signing off on the student’s hours. Interns are expected to keep track of their own hours, but will require a signature to show proof of hour completion. Mentors should expect a phone call to confirm signatures. C. Mentors will be expected to write a recommendation for the student (if the student is deserving of such). This recommendation will go in their portfolio to be viewed by staff and community members. What do I do when in my internship? Other than work your hardest and engage in every opportunity your mentor offers you, you will also be writing a journal! ● ● ● ● Journaling will take place throughout the internship. JOURNALS ARE TO BE TYPED. They will be printed and placed in your portfolio The journal will consist of the experience from the student's perspective. Students should update journals a minimum of 15 times, with substantial, interesting submission of no less than 12 sentences about their internship experience as well as their hours worked. How do I know when I am done? ● Every student will track their hours with a TIMESHEET ● There is a log sheet in the SEP handbook that students will use to track their hours. ● It is important to understand that it is the STUDENT’S responsibility to keep track of their own hours. ● Students must have their mentor sign the sheet. ● Mentors will be called to confirm signatures. Do I have to get my timesheets signed every week? ● That is to be decided with you and your mentor! ● BUT you should not turn in your sign in sheet with only the total and a signature. There needs to be updates. ● Mr. Still and Ms. Schweitzer will be checking your time sheets regularly to make sure you are on task to complete SEP. So, once I find my internship, do I just start? BIG FAT NO! You need to write a proposal that will be approved by Mr. Still or Ms. Schweitzer. No one else can approve your internship proposal! How do I create the project proposal? ● All internships MUST be approved by Mr. Still or Ms. Schweitzer. Any internship not approved will not be counted toward internship hours. 1. Students must write a project proposal in the form of a one-page business letter to their SEP teacher. The letter should address the following: A. B. C. D. How the internship is a significant learning experience How the internship will meet the required 120 mandatory hours How the internship involves active participation and not simple shadowing How the internship is supported by a mentor that is not directly related to the student E. How the internship is student driven F. How the internship will be completed G. How the internship will benefit the student E. Contact for your mentor (email/phone number) What if I want to split up my hours differently? ● This will be something you will have to get approved with Mr. Still or Ms. Schweitzer when completing your proposal. Can I rely on Andrada workshops to fulfill my 20 hours? ● No. We will provide you with as many opportunities that we can, but it is not a guaranteed 20! You will need to explore around the community and find workshops you’re interested in! Are Mr. Still and Ms. Schweitzer the only ones who have to approve? NO!!! ● Parents too need to complete a sheet in the SEP Handbook which acknowledges that they are aware of their child’s internship. Ensure that you are aware of expenses, or other special needs the project may require. Consult with your son/daughter if you have any concerns.
