And more often than not, wasn’t the most common flower of choice the daisy? The word, "daisy" comes from "day's eye," an early reference to the sun with its central yellow disk surrounded by "rays." Morning Light Grass with a backPerhaps the most common variety of the daisy is the Shasta. Developed by Ludrop of Daisies and Susans ther Burbank and named after Mount Shasta in northern California, they were first introduced in 1901. Burbank spent 17 years perfecting the Shasta daisy and many new varieties have been named since then. The most common variety in our area is ‘Becky’. 'Becky' is larger than most other Shasta cultivars growing 3-4' tall on rigid stems which do not normally require staking. It features profuse 3-4" diameter flower heads with the classic white petals and yellow center daisies are famous for. The leaves are medium green, coarsely-toothed and lance-shaped. Able to withstand full or partial sun exposure, ‘Becky’ is drought tolerant and requires very little maintenance. The flowers attract butterflies, birds and bees and are deer resistant. They are considered an herbaceous perennial and usually need to be divided every 2-3 years. The ‘Becky’ variety blooms June-September making it an ideal choice for any perennial garden. Paired with Black-Eye Susans, Helenium, Monarda, or virtually any other summer blooming perennial, its white flower pops out of the landscape. The daisy is perfect for any country-theme or cottage garden or just to help catch the eye in any landscape. The flowers make excellent Cottage Garden and long lasting cut flowers as well as perfect “He loves me” flowers. 2014 Customer Project Profiles Landscape Refurbishment—This customer wanted their rear landscape refurbished to help make the maintenance easier. We took out all the old ornamental grasses and shrubs. The mature trees were trimmed and all the old stones were removed. The landscape was upgraded with a few new evergreens, roses, hydrangeas and perennials. All new landscape fabric was installed and topped with new decorative red and white stones. Before After Landscape Refurbishment/Lighting—Dennis Podhayney, Bethlehem PA—Dennis Podhayney needed help creating a new look for the front of his home.
