Construction of the poster
• Poster size is up to 1.2m high and 1.0m wide.
• Posters should include:
• Title
• Names of authors and their contact information, include email and
institution address
• Abstract
• Introduction
• Materials and Methods
• Results
• Discussion
• Conclusion
• Acknowledgements
• References
Tips for preparing a great poster
The following are guidelines for the conference posters to be displayed at the 2015 New
Zealand Aquaculture Conference.
•
Remember your audience – the aquaculture conference covers a wide range of topics and,
in general, posters should convey what the practical application of the science is to the
industry, or how the science may be commercialised, or directly adds to the sustainability or
commercial profitability of the industry.
•
Before designing your poster think how best to get your message across clearly and
logically.
•
Careful design is needed. The poster is a visual display and therefore should attract and
capture the audience’s attention.
•
Limit the number of words to 500.
•
Avoid overlaying text on an image.
•
Show and tell the story. A 1:1 ratio is an good balance of graphics to text.
•
Make sure the text is readable. Use a clear font such as Arial or Verdana in at least 24pt
size.

•
In addition A4 copies (preferably colour) should be available in a pocket beside the poster
so that interested parties can take away a copy.
•
Use a grid to help layout your text and images. A 3 column grid is often used for poster
layout.
•
A visually clear poster will have a substantial amount of blank space. If the elements are
too tightly crammed the poster will appear chaotic and will be difficult to follow.
•
Use an interesting image if you have one to attract the audience to your poster.
•
Big blocks of text are not easy to read, especially if the reader has limited time. Instead use
bullet points.
•
Make important information stand out by using colour and/or size.
•
Tables and figures should be an important component of the poster and support your
argument. Any associated explanatory text should be close to the figure it is explaining.

All posters must be received by 1 September 2015
•
Posters will be displayed throughout the conference.
•
All posters should be removed after 2 pm on Friday 18th September.
(If you are not be able to remove your poster at this time please notify the Conference Co-ordinator)
