Lone Star Design Workshop with Jan Krentz

Lone Star Design Workshop with Jan Krentz
2015 Empty Spools Seminar ̶ Session II – Feb. 27-March 4, 2015
Experience your personal adventure with Lone Star quilt design. Learn basic construction techniques, precision
piecing and design methods to create your own contemporary Lone Star quilt design with exciting options. The class
incorporates a variety of quilting techniques including design, basic drafting, rotary cutting, piecing, blocking, paper
foundation piecing, and set-in seams. Skill level: Intermediate & above.
Yardage amounts below are suggested for a Lone Star you could potentially design in class – you will need a good
collection from which to build your individual design. Feel free to bring more or less yardage, as you prefer. Bring
MORE yardage if you are making a bigger quilt, such as a bed-sized design similar to the Broken Star (mockup, pg
4). There is a fabric store – Cotton Patch – on the Asilomar grounds, if you forget anything.
YARDAGE OPTIONS
OPTION PLAN 1:
Borrow a copy of the book Lone Star Quilts & Beyond from the local library, quilt guild library, or purchase
online from my website. Choose from any of the 6 designs patterned in the book, using the supply lists to
select and pre-cut yardage in advance. IMPORTANT: see option 2.
OPTION PLAN 2:
Go to my website: www.jankrentz.com/workshops.php.
Scan the offerings for Lone Star designs, and print any of the supply lists & fabric cutting charts from those
designs to prepare for your quilt. Some of the yardage amounts are increased to permit more design changes
in class if desired.
OPTION PLAN 3:
If you plan to make the original SPIRAL Lone Star – the yardage is included, to create a 48″ square quilt. You may create a larger Spiral quilt, change the corner square designs and more – but you must bring more
yardage in each color to increase the size of your project.
OPTION PLAN 4:
I have designed an all-new Spiral Broken Star pattern for this class! You can create a 60-inch wall-hanging,
or increase the size (as I have done) to queen or king-size for a bed quilt. The sky is the limit! I will place
the supply list on my website for your access to print.
OPTION 5:
If you do not have access to the Internet, please send me a post card at Jan Krentz, PO Box 686, Poway,
CA 92074-0686. I will print and mail the supply list you require. Contact me in advance with questions
regarding supplies or design ideas. E-mail: [email protected] .
DESIGN ASSIGNMENT PRIOR TO CLASS:
From today until you come to class in 2015, begin a study on Lone Star medallions. Clip old magazine
photos, internet pictures, and so forth. Your medallion will display your favorite colors and design
elements. What are your preferred colors? Do you want to use fabrics from your “stash”? Select a palette of colors, and supplement with larger scraps that also coordinate with the yardage you are bringing.
Collect all of the clippings in a 3-ring notebook, adding to the pages as you find inspiration. You may also
add inspiring quilting designs, applique elements, setting square and triangle ideas, borders and so forth.
Decide in advance what size quilt you would prefer to make. If you are planning a bed-size quilt, please
inform me by e-mail in advance. Thank you!

FYI: The Spiral Lone Star is the only design that does NOT utilize a design mockup, as ⅛ or ¼ of the design would not display the spiral effect (as all 8 of the central diamonds and surrounding
8 secondary diamonds are different color combinations).
In past workshops, students who have the time have made small scale mockups of the entire quilt
– and truly, they have been worthy of framing – so beautiful! Other students with computer
skills have created their “mockup” with Electric Quilt or similar auto-CAD drawing software.

2015 Empty Spools Seminar ̶ Session II – Feb. 27-March 4, 2015
Preparation before class – Design Paste-up or Mock-up
Make several copy enlargements (150% or 200%) of the diamond layout of choice. The Summer Salsa design is
only one of the choices. If you desire to make a Spiral Lone Star, no mockup is required.
Measure the height of a single row of diamonds on your selected mockup. Stack several fabrics, single layer. Cut
one strip at the measured width by 4-6" long. Turn the ruler, align the 45 degree guideline with the edge of the fabric
strip, and cut diamonds the same width as the original strip. Make several stacks of mini-diamonds, and begin filling
the line drawing paste-up with different patterns. The Spiral design does not require the mock-up, but you may make
one if you desire.
Bring all fabrics used in the paste-up to class with you.
Design Options and Suggestions:
Make several different design mockups with fabric in various positions; review in the mirrors.
Add or eliminate rows of diamonds in your mock-up. Diamond units can be 4x4, 5x5, 6x6, etc.
Split one or two diamonds, either crosswise or lengthwise.
Combine a group of 4 diamonds to create a larger diamond (as seen in Safari or Feathered Lone Stars)
Consider setting options – blocks surrounding the central star – pieced? Appliquéd?
The following layouts are options for designing your own quilt. Copy / enlarge the design shapes below.
Cut and paste fabric pieces into the designs (using glue stick). Position the hinged mirrors at the pointy tip
to pre-view your design and help you determine the quilt you would like to make.
For planning purposes – EACH diamond on the drawing below will equal 1 strip (2"- 2 1/4" wide).
Simply count how many diamonds of each fabric you have used to get a general idea of the yardage
you’ll require.
The mockups, following pages, are usually for smaller quilts that are roughly 48″ square (depending upon
the number of diamond rows, and the strip width, your quilt may be slightly larger or smaller).
If you prefer a bed sized quilt, you will plan to do additional design work in class with Jan’s instruction to design a larger quilt.
Please access Jan’s website and print the following pages for your notebook before class:
