Courageous Hound Vol.3 Iss. 9

Volume. 3 Issue. 9
Friday 16th January
Courageous Hound
Dear Parents/Carers,
Thank you all so much for your kind words over the last week. It was wonderful to share this big news with you
and your messages of support and congratulations have been so lovely to receive.
I am very pleased to share some more happy news this week.
Ms Dyne from the music department got married on Saturday
10th January in beautiful Kew Gardens. Ms Dyne will now
become Mrs Riley. This change will happen gradually and I will
inform you all when her new email address is set up.
I am also excited to announce some changes to our Governors. For the last year, we have had Michael Clark as
our Acting Chair of Governors and I would like to thank him for all his support and guidance over this exciting
year. I am pleased to welcome back Gareth Davies. As many of you may remember, he was our Chair of
Governors in our first year. Gareth Davies has just returned from a sabbatical where he has been living in Asia
and we look forward to the experience he will bring to our meetings. I am also pleased to announce that Alice
Saywood, mother of Margot Saywood (Year 7) is our new Parent Governor. A full biography is on page 4 . To
see more about our Governors please see our website: http://arkbolingbrokeacademy.org/about-us/governance.
Thank you to all the parents who came to our Year 8 Subject Review Afternoon. It was a wonderful event with
such a positive atmosphere throughout the building. It is so important for pupils to have this feedback and it was
great that they could share it with you. I saw lots of happy faces which was a great start to the weekend. Year 7
Subject Review Afternoon is the first Friday after half term 27th February. Will all Year 7 parents/carers please
save the date!
Yours Sincerely
Ms Edis

WICKED
By Jasmine Lui
Erskine 2
The Wicked theatre show was incredibly fun and enjoyable. I would recommend it to anyone as it is a must see
on the London West End. The songs were catchy and laughs throughout the show could be heard from every
direction of the auditorium. From my point of view the whole play was a highlight and no part can really be
flawed.
However, there was a part that really stood out for me and even now those who went on the trip still continue
to re-enact this line where Glinda/Garlinda was explaining how to do a hair toss with an added laugh and a “you”
added to the end. I would like to thank Miss Kirby-Ashmore and Mrs Riley for taking the time to take us on this
trip as well as the parent who kindly volunteered. This experience was unforgettable and I am glad to have gone
to watch it.
It was a late night but I'm sure everyone will agree it was well worth it! It was Wicked!

PARENT GOVERNOR
ALICE SAYWOOD
Congratulations to Mrs Saywood who has successfully applied for the role of Parent Governor. We are delighted
to welcome her to this role and offering her valued perspective in the half termly Governors meetings.
BIOGRAPHY
Alice has a daughter at Bolingbroke in Year 7 and a son in Year 3 at Honeywell School. She is already a Parent
Council Rep. Alice has a degree in Psychology and a Masters in the Psychodynamics of Human Development. She
worked for many years in advertising and publishing and is about to start her training in Psychotherapy. She
works part time as a Copy Editor. As part of her Masters she has produced a dissertation looking at adolescence
and its many effects on the relationships between the child and adult. She has also studied aspects of the impact of
emotion on literacy and therefore has a particular interest in English within the curriculum. She is keen to bring
the experience of being a parent to the Governing body. She sees the role as an exciting opportunity to get involved with the continuing development of the school.
As a parent governor, what will Ms Saywood be expected to do?
As a governor, you will need to commit time to prepare for and attend LGB meetings, to take a share of tasks
within the LGB, to visit the school including during school hours, and to take part in training.
As a parent governor, you will bring your parental viewpoint to the LGB. Through your children you will have
first-hand experience of the curriculum and how the school is perceived from a parents’ perspective. Parent
governors are elected by other parents and it is important to establish a rapport with the parental body that
elected you, whilst continuing to maintain a strategic approach to school governance.
As a Parent Governor:

You will not be representing individual parents or their concerns, you are helping to ensure that the
school meets the needs of all its pupils.

Other parents may approach you with to concerns but you should not become personally involved in individual concerns, as this may jeopardise formal procedures. You should guide parents about appropriate
lines of action and procedures.

You do not need to express opinions or vote in a particular way because you have been pressed to do so
by other parents.

You are not there to promote the interests of your own children but of all children.

Objectivity is essential.

A record should be kept of pupils that receive more than
one "caught being bold" and an ultimate prize should be
given to the top 30 pupils in the school at the end of the
year. E.g. Trip to Alton Towers.
CAUGHT BEING BOLD!
Fundraising events could be implemented into
Bolingbroke e.g. pyjama day. This would benefit
the pupils because they would realise giving
money is a good deed and will have fun at the
same time!
We could raise the money by charging £1 each
Well done for transitioning
between lessons in silence,
with purpose and showing
courtesy for others. Keep it
up! Write your name and
Civitas group on the back of
this card and enter it into the
box in reception for a chance
to win a prize.

I would like to introduce IPads to the school. They would be able to take photos
on trips and download apps that would benefit learning. (CHO)
IPads are better for the environment instead of using paper. This means less tress
are cut down. (RMC)
IPads will help pupils with their learning and staff with their schedule. (KFA)

CAUGHT BEING BOLD
Could you help?
We have recently started a new initiative of praising pupils who are caught displaying Be Bold values in the
corridor. These pupils are given a Caught Being Bold card, they then put their card in a box with the
hope of being picked out for a surprise gift such as a West End Show. Is there anything that you can offer as
a prize and incentive? Theatre tickets/tickets to live TV shows/Sports Matches. If you can think of anything
that you can offer please let Mrs Harris know.
