Volume. 3 Issue. 13 Friday 27th March 2015 Courageous Hound Dear Parents/Carers, This is a bumper 22 page spring term issue. It’s testament to all our terrific staff who make so many events and trips happen for our pupils. Please ensure you read to end to see what they have all been up to over the past few weeks. In this issue I’m delighted to announce the confirmation of our first Ski Trip 2016. This trip is open to all pupils in the Class of 2019 and Class of 2020 – please see page 17 for further details. Today we say farewell to Ms Robarts (LSA), Mr Fernandez (PE Coach), Ms Simmons (Science) and Ms Westcott (Science). Ms Simmonds and Ms Westcott are both leaving the classroom to new ventures. I know you will join me in wishing them every success in their new roles. Lastly a big thank you your continued support of this term. You all help us in so many ways: from your generous donations towards Comic Relief 2015, the participation of many in the Parent Quiz evening, support and preparation for the 2 nd annual Spring Fair and most importantly how you prepare your child for a great day of learning each day . It gives me great pleasure to read your child’s report and the academic progress they have made since the start of the academic year. Please ensure you check the bottom of your child’s bag if it isn’t forthcoming! Have a lovely spring term holiday and I look forward to seeing you at the 2 nd annual Spring Fair on Saturday 18th April. Kind Regards Ms Edis BBC School Report 2015 Well done to all the pupils who took part. See more about the day on page 2. FIRST DAY OF TERM TUESDAY 14TH APRIL START 8:20am Unless you have one of the following Enrichments: Maths Boost Woodwind Ensemble Year 9 Netball Lego Club Study Club Maths Challenge Which all start at 7:30am 12pm - 3pm 1 Courageous Hound BBC SCHOOL REPORT 2015 Thursday 19th March Congratulations to all the pupils who took part in this years BBC School Report. This year the reporters themselves take you through what happened on the day. Being a Reporter By Ivy Madoc Jones Being a journalist on the BBC school report, was really fun because you could interview people with your own questions and test your knowledge of what we learnt in the DofE Bark of a successful interview. We had a day of no lessons and we got ipods to film. We went to Northcote road and asked members of the community about our subject – ‘what colour is the dress?’ and then asked Miss Simmons the real reason behind this. The day was really fun because you could see what it was like to ask questions, fix awkward moments of questions and hold a sparkly microphone to your face. This will be benefit me in in the future because I will know how to interview and know extra knowledge of interviews. I really think you should watch the video on the Bolingbroke website despite the fact we repeated two scenes and I repeated the same answer again 3 times or something because it was really fun and educational for future jobs in reporting or even BBC! MOCK GENERAL ELECTION RESULTS Labour 88 Green 35 Conservatives 26 UKIP 9 Lib Dems 8 Turnout 154 Pupils The Day I Became a Journalist By Glenn Trevis On the 19th March Britain’s schools dug out the cameras and made reports about stories that were important to them. I was lucky enough to be part of the team representing Bolingbroke. My Team (of which I was directing) were covering the mock election. This was an interesting story to cover as we all had differing views on who should be running the country. I was very proud of my team as despite a few setbacks we still managed to keep to schedule and produced something reasonably good. Although I definitely take my hat to Olivia Scott for having absolute and undeterred patience with me for that I Thank you 11 Teachers You can see all the films at: http://arkbolingbrokeacademy.org/life-school/bbc-school-report 2 Courageous Hound MUSIC AT BOLINGBROKE By Mrs Riley This term has been quite a busy one for the musicians of Bolingbroke Academy. On Wednesday the 11 th March the Senior Choir, Scholars and Apprentices attended their first rehearsal with the award-winning choir Chantage. The choir is made up of working professionals in the city of London, all of whom were in choirs or learnt instruments while at school. Chantage has now become such a good choir that they have won BBC Choir of Year, released a last year CD and are embarking on their 3rd international tour this Summer. Bolingbroke is lucky enough to have some links with Chantage and have set up a training programme where we join in a rehearsal each term - learning a great deal about musicality, ensemble work and having fun through music (even when you’re an adult!). The conductor James was so impressed with the pupils of Bolingbroke he immediately asked when they will be coming back! Miss Kirby-Ashmore took four Year 9 Music Scholars and Apprentices (Arthur Kergall, Moniece Mullings, Eugenie Faure and Shannon Clarke) on an ARK One Voice Training day to learn about leading choirs, singing confidently and teaching music to school age pupils. The Bolingbroke Pupils were surrounded by staff members from other ARK schools which could have been a little daunting – but they were completely unfazed! Miss Kirby-Ashmore was complimented on the mature and well-spoken 6th-form students she had brought with her… The organisers were a bit shocked when she revealed that they were in fact only Year 9s! They all learnt a huge amount and said that “we wish we could come to all staff training days if they are like this!” There are 6 pupils (Ariana Farmanfarmaian, Jasmine Liu, Grace Chalkley, Betty Smith, Dill Shepherd and Charlie Venes) who are representing Bolingbroke Academy in the Ark Fusion Ensemble 2015. This ensemble is made up of a select number of musicians from across the entire Ark network. They participate in monthly rehearsals on Saturdays (!) at King Solomon Academy and this weekend are heading to Kent for a weekend residential. These intense rehearsals are all leading up to the Ark Music Gala to be held at the Barbican on Tuesday 30 th June. On Monday 23rd March we held our second Scholar and Apprentice recital, showcasing our outstandingly talented musicians. All the pupils performed confidently and completely wowed the audience. It is so great to see how much these pupils have grown as musicians and performers. In the Summer term we will have our ILP Concert (20 th May) for those pupils taking ABRSM grades at the beginning of June, the Year 7 Concert (22nd June) to showcase all our year 7 pupils and finishing the year off with the Summer concert (14th July). Put those dates in your calendars so you can come and support our wonderfully talented pupils. 3 Courageous Hound OTHELLO TRIP By Mrs Green Year 9 are studying ‘Othello’ this term and have had the fantastic opportunity of attending a drama workshop on the play with actors in school and a trip the Globe Theatre to see it live on stage. Each year Deutsche Bank sponsor a production of a Shakespeare play which meant that year 9 had both of these incredible experiences for free. At the in school workshops pupils looked at Iago’s soliloquy and used different gestures and tones of voice to act out this cunning character’s feelings. Anais Delforge Mistry said, ‘This made me view Iago from a new perspective and made it fun to learn.’ At the Globe Theatre, pupils were at the centre of the action, with many pupils standing in the ‘pit’ – the area right in front of the stage where the peasants used to stand as it only cost one penny. The production was very lively with actors often walking through the audience or even entering the stage by zip wires in military scenes. The evil nature of Iago was clear to see as he cleverly manipulated Othello in to believing his wife had been unfaithful - a lie that leads to most of the characters dying in this great tragedy. Jack Jenkin said, ‘I enoyed being it the pit as it was interactive. The best part was when all the soldiers came through the crowd as it made me feel part of the play. 4 Courageous Hound SCHOOL NOTICES MESSAGE FROM MR MCINTYRE CONGRATULATIONS! Congratulations to Eugenie Faure (Yr.9) who won frst prize in the Jazz class at the Battersea Piano Festival on Saturday 7th March. SCHOOL SHOES Please double check and return all school shoes to Mr McIntyre in Reception by Tuesday 14th April. Otherwise pupils will be charged for these shoes. ABSENCE LINE Please note that we have changed the absence system. Please now press "1" to leave a message and report your child absent. Congratulations to Luca Harper and Milly Dakin who both achieved personal bests representing the Bolingbroke Academy at the London Schools Championships 2015 on Sunday March 14th. Bolingbroke Academy was one of many Greater London schools competing. COMIC RELIEF Congratulations to all of Bolingbroke Academy. We raised an amazing £738.84 SCIENCE TRIP By Ms Westcott Year 8 Scientists who received an 'A' for effort on their half term report were taken to London Imperial College on Tuesday 17th March. They visited a university lecture hall to listen to a lecture on rocket science! PRODUCT DESIGN By Ms Houghton There are some exceptionally talented Product Designers amongst our year 9 pupils. This last term they have been making nightlights out of polypropelene based on a nature theme. Throughout the project they have learnt how to mark out, cut and finish wood and plastic neatly and accurately. We are really impressed with their hard work - keep it up! 5 Courageous Hound ATTENDANCE By Ms Bessa At Bolingbroke Academy we understand that outstanding achievement is closely related to outstanding attendance and so we set all pupils the target of 98% attendance across the year. In the Autumn term and within all the houses 3 Civitas groups achieved this: Erskine 3; Klein 5 and Verbieste 4. Many other groups were very close with 97%. Klein House had the highest overall attendance at 95.8%. In the first half of the Spring term there was a dip in attendance, however 12 Civitas groups achieved 96% and above. Whilst this is below our Academy target it is still well above national attendance averages. Erskine exceeded all other Houses and had the highest overall attendance with 96.1% 6 Courageous Hound CAN YOU HELP WITH OUR LIBRARY PROVISION? Both the Wednesday enrichment and the Friday afternoon Duke of Edinburgh group have been enjoying preparing the soil, choosing seeds to plant and planting a selection of herbs and salad for us to enjoy. We are still on the hunt for tubs if you have any spare in your gardens? Are you interested in a career in business? On the 12th May from 1pm – 4pm, I will be taking a small group of pupils to visit the Bloomberg offices in central London for an introduction to Bloomberg career insight event. This session will give participants an insight into Bloomberg, their culture, mission and values and experience the entrepreneurship that shapes the company’s day-to-day operations and innovations. Students will participate in a panel discussion with staff from across the business followed by a mass speed interviewing session where they will get to interview staff from a diverse range of careers and backgrounds. There are limited places on this trip so I really want to take pupils who have a particular passion for working in the corporate world either in Market data research and analysis, Sales and analytics or Software engineering. For more information look here: http://jobs.bloomberg.com/content/entry-level/ and for a virtual tour click here: http://jobs.bloomberg.com/content/location/ Email the reason why I should choose you in no more than 200 words by Friday 17 th April. Good luck Ms Robinson. [email protected] FOOD TASTING IN MFL By Ms Sherman As the current Year 7s have been studying food and drink this half term, we thought it was an ideal opportunity to provide pupils with a real life food tasting experience, relevant to the language they are studying. Ms Konneradt’s French groups had the chance to sample a selection of delightful smelling “fromage” (cheese) – from Camembert to St Agur, alongside “la confiture” (jam) and “pâté” with a tasty “baguette” (plus some Nutella – as an example of what French pupils like to eat for breakfast)! Pupils were really enthusiastic and keen to try these lovely foods. The fromage and confiture were a big hit! In German, Ms Sherman offered “Bockwurst” (a smoked type of sausage), alongside “Bratwurst” (sausage), “Kartoffelsalat” (potato salad), “Brezel” (preztels), “Frikadellen” (meat patties) and “Knäckebrot” (rye crackers). Despite the initial scared faces at the cut up sausages, pupils embraced the tasting session and left saying “Ich liebe Bockwurst”! For the Spanish sessions, “chorizo” and “paella” were offered with a touch of “jamón” and were an instant for pupils who tried it. “Me encanta comer chorizo”! Pupils behaved excellently throughout this experience and Team MFL will definitely be doing something similar next year! 11 Courageous Hound SPORTS UPDATE FIXTURES Date 26 March Year 7 th Year 8 Year 8 & 9 Boys Football (h) Boys B Team v TCC 6th May 13th May 20th May Year 9 Year 8 & 9 Boys Football (h) Boys B Team v TCC Wandsworth Year 9 Athletics Wandsworth Year 7 Athletics Wandsworth Year 8 Athletics Emanuel Athletics Event Emanuel School 4pm Emanuel Athletics Event Emanuel School 4pm Emanuel Athletics Event Emanuel School 4pm DANCE LONDON YOUTH GAMES WRITE UP By Ms Luetchford After coming first in the Wansdworth Dance competition the Dance group ‘Eruptive enmity’ competed in the first every Dance London Youth Games. The girls had been rehearsing hard in the run up to the completion and have dedicated a lot of their own time into the piece. Eruptive Emnity was choreographed by Destiny NICHOLASBROWN, a year 9 pupil who also took part in the competition. The competition took place on Friday 13th at the Copper Box arena. It was fantastic to see the girls compete in a venue that was used by the Olympics. Over 15 schools competed in the competition with three professional judges scoring each group. The completion was high and the genres ranged from street, ballet, jazz, contemporary and many more. Although the girls were nervous they performed with confidence and didn’t miss a step. The girls really enjoyed the day and it was fantastic experiences to see the quality of Dance London schools have to offer. Overall the girls came 11th on the day and can’t wait to compete next year! Relatively new to the sport the team embarked on a campaign to bring home a medal. The girls were drawn against The Compton School, Aylward Academy and Feltham Community College in the pool stages. The opening match was fantastically contested with a try from Jade Rostron-Smith being cancelled out and then negated by two from Compton. Jade Rostron-Smith again used her pace to double Bolingbroke’s tally before a try from Compton sealed their victory. The girls regrouped and discussed how they could improve in the next game after a bruising first encounter and went into the next match against Feltham Community College with renewed vigour. Jade Rostron-Smith again opened our scoring taking her tally to 3 for the day. Indra Traore, Anais Love and Fatima Mohamed E. were all outstanding in the forwards making some lambasting carries and slick offloads. Bolingbroke’s power began to tell and some bone-crunching tackles from Oghale Erikigho began to swing the game in our favour. The girls became ambitious with their passing but unfortunately two were intercepted and Feltham had two unopposed run in scores. Siham Dino-Bedry showed incredible determination, bravery, balance and poise to slip through at least 9 attempted tackles to bring the game level at the death. In our final pool game, Bolingbroke came from behind for another draw. Scarlett McGill scampered in at the corner for a try with some fantastic passing from Charlotte Howcroft and slick, elusive running from Ines Rostron Smith. The finals began once the pool stages were complete and we were drawn against The Petchley Academy, Prendergast Ladywell School and Marshalls Park School. The finals game were extremely physical encounters with most of the opposition being year 8 pupils or young year 9 and the size difference began to tell. Tanisha Addicott refused to let size get the better of her 5 foot frame and took after Oghale Erikigho to show nerves of steel in defence. Pepa Birkett was also outstanding against a Prendergast school. Tries in these games came from Oghale Erikigho, Scarlett McGill, Siham Dino-Bedry, Fatima Mohammed E. and Jade Rostron-Smith. The girls put their bodies on the line and were determined in running but unfortunately only came away with a loss and two more draws! It is a great testament to the girls to have drawn so many with great dedication being shown by all. The bumps and bruises paid off as the girls placed 12th out of all the 28 boroughs represented in the competition. The girls can be proud that out of all the schools in London they have come far enough in the little time that the team has been running to nearly make the top 10 schools across London. The girls won an honourable mention for best and fairest and were complimented by the tournament organizers and other schools. Their day was capped off by the opportunity to meet Maggie Alphonsi, Captain of the England Women’s World Cup winning team. She signed autographs and took photos with the team and also agreed to be in numerous selfies! If any parent would like their child to become involved in Rugby (boy or girl) or have any question about the sport then please feel free to contact Mr. Brooks at [email protected]. 13 Courageous Hound AWESOME DAY OF RUGBY. By Mr Fernandez The last 11th March Bolingbrokeʼs Rugby team played its first tournament of rugby seven. It was held at Burlington Danes Academy. The first game was versus the Isaac Newton Academy. After a nervous start of the game, the Bolingbroke team, guided by its Captain RECEE WHEELER, got a clear victory for 38 - 0. A fantastic start of the tournament. Great play by the whole team. The second game versus Hammersmith Academy was won with a 22 - 0 score. We were still adjusting some positions in the field, but our boys got a very important victory. The third game was versus Cardinal Vaughan, a very well organised team with a lot of experience, playing regularly every weekend. During this game, the BRAVE BOLINGBROKEʼS rugby players played an amazing game!!! Mr Fernández enjoyed himself very much. He said: “I am very proud of you. It was the best rugby I have seen this year”. Great team work! I would like to highlight the outstanding performance of all members of the Bolingbroke Academy Rugby Team: Merlin, Reece, Brandon, Findlay, Isaac, Sam, Tom, Nick, Louis, Alfie.” The game was full of hard contact. We could not only see really good tackles and a fast game, but also the precision of Findlayʼs foot. We got to the first half 0 - 0, but the experience of CV made a real difference at the end of the game 17 - 0." The fourth game for the second position of the tournament was versus BDA. Again, another hard and tough game full of great tackles and sprint work. A very close game lost 7 - 5. But, great team work! Unfortunately the victory went to BDA. “Congratulations to them”. The Fifth game versus Ark Putney was another demonstration of bravery from our boys. A well won game by 18 - 12. Cardinal Vaughan won the championship. BDA came in the second place, drawing in points with our team, taking the lead by only the difference in try points. Well done guys! Fantastic rugby day for the school!! 14 Courageous Hound YEAR 7 & 8 GIRLS CHELSEA TOURNEMENT By Mr Kerby Bolingbroke’s year 7&8 Girls squad made a small piece of history this week, competing in the London Youth Games qualifying tournament at the annual Chelsea FC cup at Southfields Academy. On a muggy, changeable day, there were mixed fortunes for the ladies in blue, who displayed notable character in front of many onlookers and Chelsea FC staff. Highlights of the tournament came from dominant victories against Burntwood and Elthorne Park, who were dispatched with ease. An excellent piece of skill from Hannah Cheeseman was the standout moment from a closely fought battle against Southfields Academy, who would go on to be knocked out by Elthorne Park. A cruel twist of fate saw the final contested by teams from the same group as Bolingbroke- Grey Coats against Elthorne High, a team soundly defeated by the Greyhounds, fighting for the championship. Beaten by a single goal against the eventual winners, and defeating the second place team, this was a day that could have been so different. Manager Mr Kerby was left rueing missed chances and goal difference, as his team certainly had the mettle & quality to vie for silverware, and contest the over London Youth Games competition for Wandsworth. There were many notable performances across the squad on the day. Hannah Cheeseman put a massive shift in; the midfield impresario pulled strings in the heart of the Bolingbroke side, causing problems throughout the group stages. A further performance of note came from Charlotte Blurton, who displayed an ice cold temperament between the posts, saving the greayhounds on many occasions in what could’ve been a more memorable day in other circumstances. Bolingbroke march on, knowing that next year may well bring the promise of bettering what was a stellar performance.
