Sprucing Up Our Library
A
decade ago, when I was wondering if this whole Internet thing was just a
fad, Terry Martin was on the cutting edge of it with the ArcheryTalk site. As
a longtime supporter of ArrowTrade, he kept telling me that digital online
content was here to stay and that this magazine needed an online presence.
I started my career in journalism back in 1977, when typewriters and moltenlead linotype machines were still in use, so it took plenty of convincing. Finally,
Martin said he'd help us set up and host a website so we could start posting
articles online. That was in 2005. In the years since, the ArrowTradeMagazine.
com site has served as a library of articles available as PDF downloads. The
newer interactive site at ArrowTradeMag.com we launched in 2008 has a lot
more features but it requires a high speed connection. One reason we keep the
ArrowTradeMagazine site active is because it works well even if you're using a
slower dial-up connection.
My daughter Anne, our technology manager and graphic designer, took on
the task of planning a new ArrowTradeMagazine site. Before we went too far,
we researched sites hosted by other magazines in the hunting industry. Most of
them seemed geared to serving advertisers with intrusive ads without a whole
lot of editorial content. Mom tried to raise me to follow the principle that "If you
can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything at all." I think she'll
forgive a single word. I would
call them "frenetic," which
Webster's New College
Dictonary defines as "agitated or confused."
By contrast, you'll find
ArrowTradeMagazine.com
pretty calm and organized.
Right now its main purpose is to catalog, store and
present a decade's worth of
content. Like with any good
library, you're able to search
for articles in multiple ways.
You can scroll through the
issues through the years or jump to selected topics, like bow reports or tuning
columns. Fans of John Kasun's Lighter Side, which I strongly suspect is the first
page many readers turn to, will find plenty to chuckle at over there. I personally
think his current column, on page 114, is his best ever but then again, I can relate
to a husband who makes clever remarks about his wife and lives to regret them.
We'll be adding features to both websites in the months to come, so I
encourage you to visit them frequently. The addresses are easy to remember at
ArrowTradeMag.com and ArrowTradeMagazine.com.
