First Grade Enrichment!
Fill your morning with exciting, interactive, enriching activities! First grade students will be in their own selfcontained classroom with a certificated 1st grade instructor and great volunteers for support! They will engage in hands-on arts and crafts, outdoor
education, team building activities, nutrition, storytelling, music, and science. This is a fun, appealing way to get students ready for first grade!
Course Descriptions Grades 2-6
Art : June~ Explore world art through the use of different mediums. Make a Rain Stick from Central America, Molas from Panama, Aboriginal Dot
Painting from Australia and Origami from Japan among others. Discover the unique versatility of global art and how it opens your mind to creativity
and encourages the imagination.
August~ We are going to explore the exciting world of creating a three dimensional environment. We will be developing mural-type scenes, focusing
on the use of paint, colored pencils, markers and cut shapes with an emphasis on illustration.
GoPro Fun: We’ll help your kid and your GoPro reach new heights of complexity and storytelling in this four day training/recording adventure in-
tended to improve video skills and imagination. Video camera required (GoPro or not). Each day of class will (1) show inspiring video segments,
(2) assign & teach video tasks, (3) record video on campus, and (4) teach post production steps. A finished v-story--or a collection of worthy segments
will be complete by the end of class.
Drama : The realm of drama will be explored through various avenues such as set design, painting, acting, directing, sound, costumes, lighting,
makeup, designing a playbill, and more. A fun production will be offered for an ending performance!
LEGO Engineering : Power-up your engineering skills with over 100,000 pieces of Legos!
Kids will apply real world concepts in physics,
engineering, and architecture through projects designed by Cal Poly Engineers. Each day’s projects are geared uniquely to challenge each student’s
abilities. We will explore motorized, mechanized, and architectural projects using Legos in a fun way!
“Mouse Trap” : Do you enjoy making simple tasks much more difficult than necessary? Why take the easy way when you can take the ridiculously
complicated route? Better yet, build a complicated contraption that performs a sequential chain reaction with your fellow classmates and show off
your creative machine. Students will engage in hands-on discovery of engineering principles while being inspired by “Rube” Goldberg’s popular
cartoon gadgets. Check this out for some history, http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/rube-goldberg-the-father-of-inventions/
Let’s Get Cookin’ : Are you crazy for cooking and trying new foods? Students will be exposed to the Culinary Arts in a fun, nutritious, and edible way!
Students will learn about safety, tools of the kitchen, and the cultural origins of the foods prepared. Daily, students will make a healthy and appealing
snack to enjoy. No experience necessary! *If your child has food allergies, it is advised that he/she take an alternate class for safety reasons.
Wild Card : Each day will be filled with active, outdoor activity based classes. You will receive a wildcard revealing the theme for the day. What
adventure will await you? Wait in suspense, then solve the mystery when you arrive! You’ll have to sign up for this secret physical activities class to see
what experiences await you…if you dare…
Starry, Starry Science : Physics and Chemistry through the eyes of an Astronomer! Make a black hole, create galaxy art, and discover how we
know what stars are made of. You’ll leave with a daily project to take home and teach someone else about the stars. It will be four days of astronomy
fun; and you’ll be invited to a family star night!
