WORKSHOPS
ARTISTS WRITE – 2 Day Workshop with Maud Guilfoyle
TUESDAYS July 7, July 14 (7:00 pm – 10:00 pm) $80
Develop an artist statement, write about your inspiration and process, and write articles and press releases. Find
communities of other artists on the web, learn the difference between posts for blogs and Facebook and write post titles
that will target your desired audience. Photo imaging, word mapping and safety on the internet will also be covered.
You will practice writing morning pages, reviewing other artists’ work, and create your own 20 second elevator speech.
Come to first class with an active blog and/or Facebook page with at least 5 images and posts. Sketch pad, lined paper,
a smart phone, (or tablet, or laptop) are required. Information about resources, online venues, and copyright information
will be distributed.

MONDAY
* PAINTING AND DRAWING WITH AND WITHOUT FIGURE
with César Jerez - 6 wks starting July 6 (9:30 am - 12:30 pm) $190 ($150 Teens)
We will work realistically or abstract from the figure. We will discuss principles of drawing and painting, focusing on
measuring, proportion, scale, positive and negative space, and sighting, as well as color theory and how to apply them
to the representation of the figure. We will work on paint application, understanding value and temperature as well as
the importance of edges and color harmony. The class will begin with short poses and then change to one long pose for
the duration of the class. The model will be nude or partially clothed. There will be discussions based on many of these
principles as well as anatomy and gesture concepts. There will also be monthly critiques to help you analyze your own
work.
SCULPTURE - STONE
with Natalie Frier - 6 wks starting July 6 (10:00 am - 1:00 pm) $190 ( $150 Teens)
Find the joy and excitement in carving a form in stone in a congenial atmosphere. Beginning students will be introduced
to the tools and process of bringing a sculpture to completion. Advanced students will be encouraged to use power
tools. Non-representational as well as figurative methods will be taught with the emphasis on creating three-dimensional
shapes. All levels of ability are welcome.
MONDAY
CONTEMPORARY PRINTMAKING: AN INTRODUCTION
with Tai Hwa Goh - 4 wks starting July 6 (7:00 pm– 10:00 pm) $140 (includes $10 solvent fee)
Learn the basics of contemporary printmaking techniques such as solar plate etching, mix media mono-print & collage,
photo-lithography along with the traditional methods of screen printing, collographs, lino-cut, wood block and etching
techniques of dry-point; soft ground; hard-ground; aquatint and more. Materials will be provided to absolute beginners
along with individual attention to each student. Students are encouraged to try many methods till they find one most
appealing to their artistic sensibilities.
TUESDAY
THE CREATIVE PROCESS
with Edla Cusick - 6 wks starting July 7 (9:30 am – 12:30 pm ) $190 ($150 Teens)
Principles of composition, color, form and space. All media are explored, augmented by class discussion.
PLEIN AIR PAINTING - WATERCOLOR
with Theresa Troise Heidel - 6 wks starting July 7 (9:30 am – 12:30 pm ) $190 ( $150 Teens)
Experience the thrilling aspects of painting watercolor on location. Emphasis will be on composition, value, color and
capturing light and shade in a simplified manner. Every week we plan to explore a new location. Individual attention will
be given to each student. Students will be given a list of supplies for their outdoor watercolor adventures.
SCULPTURE - STONE

* DIRECT PAINTING - THE FIGURE
with César Jerez - 6 wks starting July 7 (1:00 pm - 4:00 pm) $190 ( $150 Teens)
Learn to paint directly and quickly from the model! Start with short poses to get the gesture and action of the figure
then develop into longer poses. Topics covered include: learning to mix flesh tones quickly; getting proportions quickly
and right; structural dynamics; understanding values, hue and color temperature; massing and form development.
WEDNESDAY
DRAWING AND PASTELS
with Peggy Dressel - 6 wks starting July 6 (1:00 pm - 4:00 pm) $190 ( $150 Teens)
Learn to do beautiful pastel paintings. Use pastels alone or create a new, unique look by combining with watercolor or
acrylic. Drawing, color and composition will be covered. Subject matter: portrait, figure, still life and landscape. Class fee
includes some classes with models depending on enrollment.

*FIGURE DRAWING THROUGH STRUCTURAL AWARENESS

This class is geared towards those who want to work from the model, through a method of structural awareness. Weekly
lessons on bone structures and muscle groups will be combined with lessons in basic drawing skills. We will be focusing
on landmarks of the body that artists can use to help with proportion, scale and structure. This is class for those beginning
to develop their drawing skills as well as those who just need some more knowledge of anatomy to move their work to
another level.

While drawing the model, explore the elements common to all good drawing – movement, proportion, structure, line
and form. Learn to conceptualize the complex forms of the body as simple groups of masses and sub-masses. Individual
critiques and lectures.

Using the still life and model to focus on basic painting principles of massing, value relationships, color and design.
Instruction geared to student’s individual skill level.
WEDNESDAY
CLASSICAL AND MODERN OIL PAINTING TECHNIQUES
with Max Horbund assisted by Aiko Aoyagi - 6 wks starting July 8 (6:30 pm - 9:30 pm) $190 ( $150 Teens)
Learn to use - Oil Paint - to represent still life and other images using classic chiaroscuro and modern concepts. This class
features a One Room Schoolhouse environment where newer painters benefit from exposure to advanced painters,
serious critics, and continuous promotion of fundamental basic concepts. Emphasis centers on representing still life
forms and textures from life convincingly. Instruction can also include creating paintings from graphic reference, pictures
and painting images supplied by the student. Frequent demos and lectures on technique and the safe prep and handling
of professional level artist materials. Special attention given to the Art School bound and the needs of professional
painters.
ART AND SOUL OF CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING
with Jane Chang - 6 wks starting July 8 (7:00 pm - 9:00 pm) $135
We will examine various techniques, composition and problem solving skills of Chinese brush painting along with its
history and trends. Method of preparation and loading colors and orientation of brush strokes and some
unconventional renditions will be covered. ALL LEVELS WELCOME!
THURSDAY
PLEIN AIR PAINTING – OIL AND ACRYLIC
with César Jerez - 6 wks starting July 9 (9:00 pm - 12:00 pm) $190 ( $150 Teens)
This is a class geared toward giving you all the knowledge and technical advice for venturing outdoors, painting en plein
air. We will cover topics like Atmospheric Perspective, Linear Perspective, Reflections, Color Theory, as well as
information for dealing with the different elements presented by painting outdoors (changing light, wind, rain, bugs,
people.) We will meet outside at various locations armed with the knowledge of what to expect from working in nature.
Give yourself an opportunity to experience the amazing feeling of painting directly from nature and open up the world
of Plein Air Painting.
INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED WATERCOLOR
with Christine Friedman - 6 wks starting July 9 (10:00 am - 1:00 pm) $190
Develop your own style in this exciting spontaneous medium. Classes stress the importance of design composition, value
studies and color theory. Learn to achieve glowing colors and light your painting. Personal assistance, drawing
instruction, painting demonstration and individual critiques weekly.
PRINTMAKING
Monitored - 6 wks starting July 9 (10:00am - 1:00pm) $200 (includes $10 solvent fee)
This class may work in the print studio in the techniques of etching, mono print, and relief, safe photo-etching and
digital lithography.
* OIL PAINTING: STILL LIFE/FIGURE/ PORTRAIT

Learn to represent the figure and portrait using classic chiaroscuro and modern concepts. This class features a One Room
Schoolhouse environment where newer painters benefit from exposure to advanced painters, serious critics, and
continuous promotion of fundamental basic concepts. Using live models, focus is on representing the human form and
portrait using careful observation, a system of symbolic anatomy and lessons gained from painting still life forms and
other textures from life. Frequent demonstrations and lectures on painting technique and the safe preparation and
handling of professional level artist materials. Special attention given to the Art School bound and the needs of
professional painters.

THURSDAY
FOUNDATIONS OF DRAWING
with César Jerez - 6 wks starting July 9 (7:00 pm - 10:00pm) $190 ( $150 Teens)
This class is geared toward all those who want to learn to draw through strong foundations. Many of us artists were
thrown into our creative lives without the foundations we need to make strong images. Here is a class which will teach
you the basics while expanding on what you already know. You will learn how to see, how to get it right through the
use of, negative and positive space, sighting, measuring, squinting, value judgment, etc. You will learn to create strong
compositions through the use of thumbnails, focal points, rules of thirds, the rule of odds, leading the eye, asymmetrical
and symmetrical balance. We will discuss getting emotion out of your drawings through working with edges, values,
contrast, and atmospheric perspective. And we will learn to maximize your strengths, while developing a strong
supporting cast of skills.
