展覧会概要
妖怪イヌジマプロジェクトとは・・・
犬島の古き時代を伝える黒い砂から再生した「妖怪イヌジマ」を立体としてだけでなく、島の中と外とつな
ぐ媒体(media)やコミュニケーションツールとして活かすことで、妖怪イヌジマの生まれ故郷である犬島を思
う人々に働きかけ、ルーツと存在について問いかける試みです。
一見可愛らしくも恐ろしくも見える妖怪イヌジマは、どちらにせよキャラクター性を強く感じずにはいられ
ない、ぬいぐるみとしての側面が際立って見えます。しかしながら、妖怪イヌジマは作品そのものの魅力に
とどまらず、作品を購入した後、購入者の生活へ寄り添いながら価値観に影響を及ぼすように展開していく
という点において、特異な性質をもっています。それは商行為を目的としたものではなく、犬島という瀬戸
内海に浮かぶ小さな島への想いから端を発した純然たるアートプロジェクトです。
縁のないはずの土地に妖怪イヌジマを通して里帰りし、自身に由縁ある地域を増やしていく。ふるさとに馳
せる思いを喚起します。妖怪イヌジマを通して、瀬戸内海に浮かぶ小さな島への想いを共有し記憶を引き継
いでいく、そんなプロジェクトを体験するきっかけとなる展覧会。どうぞご高覧下さい。
プロデューサーメッセージ
日本人にとって妖怪とはなんだろうか。昔は科学が発達していなかった為、今以上に解明できない不思議な
ことが沢山あった。人は分からないものに恐怖心を抱く為、解決策をほしがり、そして妖怪は生まれた。つ
まり妖怪は怖いものではなく、分からないものを理解する為につくりだされたと言える。
それでは今、多くの人が妖怪イヌジマに魅せられているのは、何故だろうか。科学でいろんなことが解明さ
れても、自分の心の不思議は解明できないからではないだろうか。

1977年広島県生まれ。2002年高知大学大学院美術教育専修修了。 2000年から神・人等をテーマに存在と
は何かを問う実験的作品を制作、鑑賞者が操作・体験する事で完成する大型の参加型作品を発表。 2003年か
ら土地に憑く者や異界の者をモチーフに、場所由来の作品を制作。 2006年、犬島で産まれた作品妖怪イヌ
ジマをコミュニケーションツールとする「妖怪イヌジマプロジェクト」を開始、2009年から妖怪イヌジマの
里親となった参加者が妖怪イヌジマとともに犬島へ里帰りすることで犬島を体験する「イヌジマトイヌジマヘ
イコウ」へと展開を広げ、2012年からは半世紀前に衰退したという島の祭りの行灯を復活させ「犬島天満宮
アート行灯プロジェクト」を行い、作品の参加者だけでなく、島人や来島者との交流も交えた展開へと発展。
2014年からは初猫プロジェクト等も平行して行うなど活動を広げている。

Exhibition Overview
What is YOKAI INUJIMA Project?
Using the black sand of Inujima to create these fictional creatures, YOKAI INUJIMA Project utilizes these dolls as a
communication tool to bring people to Inujima and reflect on the ideas surrounding roots and heritage.
At first glance, the creatures seem to merely be stuffed dolls that have both a precious and eerie look about them. As
an art project that began with the artist’s sincere empathy for the small island, what sets them apart from other dolls is
that their function is not only to be a collectible, but also continuously bring the owner back to Inujima, whether
physically or in spirit, and reflect on the island and the roots there.
These creatures are vessels that pass down the memory and history of Inujima. We hope that as you view this
exhibition, you will also find a connection to the island that it will resonate with a feeling of home in you.
Message from the Producer
What is the significance of monsters to Japanese people?
Long ago, before the advent of science and enlightenment, most phenomena could not be explained or justified by
human understanding. Since humans are easily frightened by the unknown, they wanted answers, and thus came up
with these monster-creatures, or “yokai” as the explanation for these things. Therefore we can say that monsters
originally were not objects of fear, but existed as answers to the things unknown.
So then how can we explain why, in the age of modern science, are people still fascinated by the yokai, INUJIMA? It is
perhaps because although science can explain the world to us, it cannot resolve the mystery in a human heart.

About the Artist
Born in 1977 in Hiroshima, she has obtained a master’s degree in Art Education at Kouchi University in 2002. Since 2000
she has been creating experimental pieces that question existence through themes such as divinity and humanity. The
work has often been participatory, and culminated in big, audience-involved exhibitions. In 2003 she began creating
region specific work revolving around creatures that possess that region, and other spirit-world elements. In 2006 while
residing in Inujima, she created a creature for the island. Using this work as a communication tool, she started the “Yokai
Inujima Project.” This project paired the creatures with “foster parents” and invited them on a pilgrimage to the
creatures’ birth place, Inujima. This developed into a community interactive project called “Inujima Shrine Lantern Art
Project.” The island’s festival had seen a rapid decline since 50 years ago, but through this project the lanterns were lit
once again, giving the island residents, Inujima foster parents, and visitors an opportunity to interact and enjoy the
traditions of the island. In 2014 she began the “Hatsu-neko Project” and continues to broaden her artistic practice.
