Artspace News OFF ROAD CYCLE CHALLENGE – PLEASE SPONSOR US! From 23rd-25th May 2015 a group of young people, parents, staff and volunteers will be undertaking a 60 mile sponsored cycle ride hoping to raise sponsorship for Cinderford Artspace. The ride will follow the length of the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal and a part of the Celtic Trail East, both off road cycle routes. We are aiming to raise in the region of £3,000 for our organisation. Among the group are two teenagers aged 13 and 15 who intend to complete the 60 mile trail on unicycles and one 9 year old who will attempt part of the ride on a mini bike. We will take up to three days to complete our bike ride as the boys on unicycles will need to do the ride in stages. This is a big challenge for them as they do not get the opportunity to ‘free wheel’ down the hills like the rest of us! All funds raised will support Artspace’s work – please sponsor us, you can make a d o n at i o n o n l i n e t h ro u g h o u r s e c u re f u n d ra i s i n g pa ge at http://www.everyclick.com/cinderford-artspace/1053492/0/ Or, of course cash or cheques are always gratefully received. page 4. mindSCAPE Project Update (Hannah Elton-Wall) ‘mindSCAPE’ is a Lottery funded project, led by the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and co-ordinated and delivered by Artspace. The aim of the project is to enable people with dementia and their carers to reconnect to the landscape via fortnightly workshops at Bracelands Adventure Centre. So far, we’ve enjoyed short walks and outdoor workshops including natural sculpture, landscape painting, tai chi, pin-hole camera photography, pottery, willow weaving, eco-printing, wood carving and festive wreath making. During the Spring term, we experimented with acrylics and mosaics – forthcoming workshops include mark making and leather craft. All workshops are inspired by nature; we’ve been working with natural materials and consuming plenty of coffee and cake!! Activities take place all year round, so the Summer term is where the project really comes into its own – we will be enjoying the warmer weather by getting out into the fresh air to enjoy the beautiful log circle site in the woods at Bracelands (Turn to page 26 for further information about how to register for the mindSCAPE project). Arts Awards (Khan Fox De Vere/Rob Toomer) Many of our young people, including Engage and Studio Sessions, are working on various levels of Arts Awards at the moment. Some will be going for moderation quite soon, so I hope to be able to post great success stories in my next news update. So far all completed Awards that we have entered for moderation have received outstanding pass results. Keep up the good work! I would also just like to take this opportunity to speak to all of the very generous members and friends of Artspace who responded to my plea for arts supplies a little while ago. Your fantastic donations have enabled me to work with a number of young people on arts projects that have made a real difference to their lives and general wellbeing. Thank you. page 5. Local Arts News: Open Access Printmakers Co-operative in the Forest. A group has formed to set up a Printmakers Co-operative in the Forest of Dean. Inspired by the successfully run Gloucestershire Printmakers Co-operative in Stroud, the initiative aims to provide open access workshop facilities for printmakers and artists in processes such as Screen-printing, Etching, Monoprinting and Linocut. As well as open access membership the Co-operative also aim to run workshops, courses and events and hope to establish studio spaces for resident artists and makers. The group is currently looking for a venue and welcomes any ideas or interest in supporting the project. Contact: Nichola Goff- [email protected] Engage (Khan Fox De Vere). After another great AGM Engage have had a few weeks of peace and quiet over the Christmas period, however with the promise of Spring in the air we are working hard on new projects. The entire Engage company are working towards a new full length show on March 20th at Bream Parish Church (please see posters for details). This will be an old style Cabaret show. Fun for all the family, with some never seen before stunts and tricks! Leading on from this we will hopefully be making a movie (funding application pending). It will be based loosely on the Jungle Book with the Engage Seniors performing alongside animated characters. Screening should be sometime in September. This is a very exciting project and will give our young people an insight into a very different way to perform their amazing skills. We are starting to get lots of bookings in now for the Summer season of fetes and fairs. If you, or someone you know wishes to book any Engage Circus skills workshops for the forthcoming months, please book early to avoid disappointment. page 6. Exhibition News (Rob Toomer) As this brochure goes to press, we are embarking on an exciting new exhibition venture! Rob Toomer and Laura Deave have worked around the clock to launch our new ‘ARTSPACE AVIARY’ exhibition. They have made over 50 model birds, using paper clay, which have been packaged in their own unique ‘bird boxes’ and sold for £5 to the public. Each bird will be taken home by their new owner and decorated, and returned to Artspace to form part of a stunning community exhibition! We will post photos of the work on our website and Facebook page. Would you like to exhibit some of your work at Artspace? Join in with an Artspace class, we display the work of participants throughout the year. DID YOU KNOW? Facts about Artspace Cinderford: Here are some facts and figures about Artspace’s work. Whether you would like to paint something to hang on your wall at home, or make a beautiful crafty gift for a friend or family member, these half day or full day workshops aim to help you to create something unique! Saturday 18th April 10:30AM – 4:30PM ‘Upcycled Mosaic Madness’ with Rachel Shilston. Have a go at the art of mosaic and create a decorative heart to hang up at home. In this session, you will learn a little about the history of mosaic making, plus the basics of shaping, fixing and grouting. If you wish, you can bring along any pretty pieces of crockery or broken jewellery to incorporate into your design. Cost: £41. All materials will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch. Saturday 16th May, 10:30AM – 4:30PM ‘Silversmithing – Making a Silver Ring and Earrings’ with Wendy Murphy. Have you ever dreamed about making your own ring in sterling silver, and maybe a pair of matching earrings? Now you can! Wendy can lead you through the steps of traditional silversmithing techniques of cutting, filing and soldering silver wire to make your own ring and then polishing it to an amazing shine. You can even create lovely textures on the silver such as hammering or stamp a personal message or date. When you’ve finished your ring, there will be time to make a pair of matching earrings in a choice of shapes – for pierced or non-pierced ears. The workshop will take place in a friendly and nurturing atmosphere and is suitable for beginners and for those who may have had a basic introduction to silversmithing previously. Cost: £50. All materials will be provided. Please bring an apron to protect your clothes and a packed lunch. page 24. Saturday 13th June 10:30AM - 4:30PM ‘Eco Dyeing and Printing’ with Lizzie Godden. Activities will be creative, stimulating, enjoyable and inspired by the landscape. In a nutshell, it’s all about having a relaxing time, in a relaxing environment. Would you like to be involved? Activities are FREE, transport can be arranged and refreshments are included (a light lunch, coffee/tea and excellent cakes!) Booking is essential.
