affordable courses and workshops for adults and children. From
singing to sewing – from circus to ceramics, there is something for everyone to

independent workshops including dance and drama for young people. Please
take the time to have a look at our new news section to keep you up to date with
Artspace projects, activities and charity fundraising.
Artspace News
OFF ROAD CYCLE CHALLENGE – PLEASE SPONSOR US!
From 23rd-25th May 2015 a group of young people, parents, staff and
volunteers will be undertaking a 60 mile sponsored cycle ride hoping to raise
sponsorship for Cinderford Artspace. The ride will follow the length of the
Monmouthshire and Brecon canal and a part of the Celtic Trail East, both off
road cycle routes.
We are aiming to raise in the region of £3,000 for our organisation. Among the
group are two teenagers aged 13 and 15 who intend to complete the 60 mile
trail on unicycles and one 9 year old who will attempt part of the ride on a mini
bike. We will take up to three days to complete our bike ride as the boys on
unicycles will need to do the ride in stages. This is a big challenge for them as
they do not get the opportunity to ‘free wheel’ down the hills like the rest of us!
All funds raised will support Artspace’s work – please sponsor us, you can make

cash or cheques are always gratefully received.

mindSCAPE Project Update (Hannah Elton-Wall)
‘mindSCAPE’ is a Lottery funded project, led by the Wye Valley Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty and co-ordinated and delivered by Artspace. The
aim of the project is to enable people with dementia and their carers to
reconnect to the landscape via fortnightly workshops at Bracelands Adventure
Centre. So far, we’ve enjoyed short walks and outdoor workshops including
natural sculpture, landscape painting, tai chi, pin-hole camera photography,
pottery, willow weaving, eco-printing, wood carving and festive wreath making.
During the Spring term, we experimented with acrylics and mosaics –
forthcoming workshops include mark making and leather craft. All workshops
are inspired by nature; we’ve been working with natural materials and
consuming plenty of coffee and cake!! Activities take place all year round, so
the Summer term is where the project really comes into its own – we will be
enjoying the warmer weather by getting out into the fresh air to enjoy the
beautiful log circle site in the woods at Bracelands (Turn to page 26 for further
information about how to register for the mindSCAPE project).
Arts Awards (Khan Fox De Vere/Rob Toomer)
Many of our young people, including Engage and Studio Sessions, are working
on various levels of Arts Awards at the moment. Some will be going for
moderation quite soon, so I hope to be able to post great success stories in my
next news update. So far all completed Awards that we have entered for
moderation have received outstanding pass results. Keep up the good work!
I would also just like to take this opportunity to speak to all of the very generous
members and friends of Artspace who responded to my plea for arts supplies a
little while ago. Your fantastic donations have enabled me to work with a
number of young people on arts projects that have made a real difference to
their lives and general wellbeing. Thank you.

Local Arts News:
Open Access Printmakers Co-operative in the Forest.
A group has formed to set up a Printmakers Co-operative in the Forest of Dean.
Inspired by the successfully run Gloucestershire Printmakers Co-operative in
Stroud, the initiative aims to provide open access workshop facilities for
printmakers and artists in processes such as Screen-printing, Etching, Monoprinting and Linocut. As well as open access membership the Co-operative also
aim to run workshops, courses and events and hope to establish studio spaces
for resident artists and makers. The group is currently looking for a venue and
welcomes any ideas or interest in supporting the project.

Engage (Khan Fox De Vere).
After another great AGM Engage have
had a few weeks of peace and quiet over
the Christmas period, however with the
promise of Spring in the air we are
working hard on new projects. The entire Engage company are working towards
a new full length show on March 20th at Bream Parish Church (please see
posters for details). This will be an old style Cabaret show. Fun for all the family,
with some never seen before stunts and tricks! Leading on from this we will
hopefully be making a movie (funding application pending). It will be based
loosely on the Jungle Book with the Engage Seniors performing alongside
animated characters. Screening should be sometime in September. This is a very
exciting project and will give our young people an insight into a very different
way to perform their amazing skills. We are starting to get lots of bookings in
now for the Summer season of fetes and fairs. If you, or someone you know
wishes to book any Engage Circus skills workshops for the forthcoming months,
please book early to avoid disappointment.

Exhibition News (Rob Toomer)
As this brochure goes to press, we are embarking on
an exciting new exhibition venture! Rob Toomer and
Laura Deave have worked around the clock to launch
our new ‘ARTSPACE AVIARY’ exhibition. They have
made over 50 model birds, using paper clay, which
have been packaged in their own unique ‘bird boxes’
and sold for £5 to the public. Each bird will be taken
home by their new owner and decorated, and
returned to Artspace to form part of a stunning
community exhibition! We will post photos of the
work on our website and Facebook page. Would you like to exhibit some of your
work at Artspace? Join in with an Artspace class, we display the work of
participants throughout the year.
DID YOU KNOW? Facts about Artspace Cinderford:
Here are some facts and figures about Artspace’s work.
Artspace is a Registered Charity and was initiated in 1988 by a group of
volunteers, many of whom had learning difficulties.
On average, Artspace deliver around 1,000 sessions a year, these sessions
generate around 11,000 attendances. This is an incredible output for such a
small organisation with a small team and a modest turnover of, on average
£180,000 per annum!
We are fully inclusive, classes represent the diversity of the area in which we
live. We work with schools and other youth organisations and specialise in
provision for children and young people facing challenging circumstances.
Our adult education programme generates around 380 enrolments a year.
60% of those are from people with learning or physical difficulties.
We provide creative opportunities that help improve skills, confidence,
well-being and social connectedness. Our programme helps to reduce
isolation, nurture transferrable skills and provides alternative qualifications
for young people.
page 7.
HOW CAN YOU HELP SUPPORT ARTSPACE?
On average, just 3% of Artspace’s income comes from donations from the
public. Can you help us raise this to 6%?
If you are already a supporter of Artspace we would like to say a great big
thank you! If you would like to be involved in supporting Artspace, there are
lots of ways that could help us to fundraise. Here are some ideas:
Simply donate: If you lack time, but would like to help – there is nothing quicker,
easier (or more gratefully received) than a simple donation! You can make a
cheque payable to ‘Cinderford Artspace’ or access our secure online donation
page at http://www.everyclick.com/cinderford-artspace/1053492/0
Run a coffee morning: This could be at your home, or at Artspace, with
proceeds from the sales of coffee and cake raising money for the charity.
Do a car boot sale or raffle: Get rid of the things you no longer want, all for a
good cause.
Hold a sponsored event: Are you sporty and looking for a challenge? Over the
last few years volunteers have run the FOD half marathon to raise funds. A
group even took on the 3 Peaks Challenge and climbed three mountains, raising
over £2,000!
Make something beautiful: If you are creative, help support the arts by selling
or auctioning a piece of your work on ebay.
Come along and support us: Just by attending a course or workshop, you are in
turn supporting the organisation. Sign up for our email alerts to receive our eprogramme and find out about the range of events and exhibitions we organise
throughout the year.
Become a member: For just £10 a year you will receive free entry to our film
showings 3 times per term, we will also send you our brochure each term and
keep you informed about events and freebies.
Volunteer: Artspace welcome volunteers to help support our workshops and
fundraising events. A great way of helping a charity, meeting new people or
brushing up your skills for your CV!

Looking At Pattern In Art, with Diana Gash.
Pattern is one of the key means of creating interest in Art and Design. We will

many ways that pattern has been used in the creation of Art and Crafts. From
the fabrics in Renaissance portraits to the textiles of revolutionary Soviet
textiles: From the painted interiors of Vuillard and Mattisse to the decorative
Architecture of Morocco and Venice. Your challenge will be to create a painting,
figurative or abstract which is full of interest and rich in pattern.

Looking At Classical Beauty, with Diana Gash.
We are told that our idea of classical beauty has been handed down to us from
the Greeks. Look at Hermes (image of Elvis) created by Praxiteles of Athens in
around 300 BC. Look at the statues of Apollo and Athena and the horses of the
Acropolis. We can create our own bit of Ancient Greece by painting, making
clay plaques, large cardboard cut outs and stencilled friezes. The choice is yours.
Venue: Artspace, Cinderford.
Starts: 21st April 2015. For 9 weeks with a half term break.

with Wendy Murphy.
Have you ever dreamed about making your
own ring in sterling silver, and maybe a pair
of matching earrings? Now you can! Wendy
can lead you through the steps of traditional
silversmithing techniques of cutting, filing
and soldering silver wire to make your own
ring and then polishing it to an amazing
shine. You can even create lovely textures on the silver such as hammering or
stamp a personal message or date. When you’ve finished your ring, there will
be time to make a pair of matching earrings in a choice of shapes – for pierced or
non-pierced ears. The workshop will take place in a friendly and nurturing
atmosphere and is suitable for beginners and for those who may have had a
basic introduction to silversmithing previously.
