Welcome to the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
You are now part of the largest and most
dynamic school of its kind in Australia.
We offer twelve graduate programs – from
the world-leading Executive Master of
Arts, to Criminology, Social Policy and Arts
Curatorship – and each year we teach and
supervise over 1,600 of the world’s brightest
graduate students.

Orientation events for students commencing study with the Graduate School of Humanities and
Social Sciences in 2015 will be held during Semester One 2015 O-Week (23 - 27 February 2015).

• Adding and withdrawing from subjects in Semester 1, 2015
• Last date to enrol in standard semester one subjects: Friday 13th March
• Last date to withdraw from standard Semester 1 subjects without incurring fees:
Tuesday 31st March (census date*)
• Last date to withdraw from standard Semester 1 subjects without incurring a fail grade on your
academic record: Friday 8th May
*A census date is the last day to withdraw from subjects without being liable for subject fees.
Subjects offered in intensive mode (e.g. over short periods in certain months) have different census
dates than semester-long subjects – please check your Student Portal for individual dates. Look
under the ‘Admin’ tab and select the ‘Check my Enrolment’ link.

Who are we?
The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences is a place for intellectual engagement and
collegiality.
Our academic and professional staff work to ensure a supportive student environment that
encourages critical thinking and creativity, alongside cohort-building and networking between
students, academic experts, industry leaders, and our Faculty partners.
Our programs are of world class quality and scholarship, and we aim to provide an environment
that enables our graduates to be responsive to changing global and workplace circumstances. Our
graduates become part of a dynamic global community of thinkers, scholars and leaders, which
extends beyond graduation to an alumni network.
The School offers fourteen Masters by Coursework programs across the Humanities and Social
Sciences and Masters by Research and PhD programs.

The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences offers unique and purpose built spaces
for students in the magnificent heritage-listed Old Arts Building, which is easily recognised by its
iconic clock tower. Geographically, Old Arts is at the heart of the University of Melbourne Parkville
campus.
Our facilities and flexible learning environments reflect a contemporary approach to teaching and
learning. Collaborative work and social spaces enable students to network, exchange ideas, and
socialise with fellow students, employers, and community leaders, and to build a strong cohort
experience. Our facilities include:

ENROLLING IN YOUR COURSE (FOR THE FIRST TIME)

International Students Only – All international students initially have an ‘onshore sanction’ on their
record which prevents them from enrolling. To have your sanction lifted, please present your
passport to the reception desk on the ground level of the Old Arts Building.
Step-by-step instructions:
• Accept your offer into the course as per instructions on your offer letter. If you were made a
conditional offer, please submit the required information to meet the conditions of your offer to
[email protected].
• Create a University email account.
• Complete all of your enrolment questions, ensuring you finish each step. This includes checking
your current contact details, residency information, education background, and completing your
enrolment declaration. You should work through each of the enrolment sections by clicking on
the red GO button. Once a section has been completed, the button will become green. Please do
not complete your enrolment through the student portal.
• Enrol in your subjects. You should check your course structure in the 2015 handbook to ensure
you select the correct subjects for your course. You must ensure that the subjects you wish to
enrol in have a status of ‘enrolled’ and not ‘planned.’ Please do not enrol in subjects through the
student portal.
• Sample study plans are available on our current students website (http://arts.unimelb.edu.au/
graduate-studies/coursework). These will assist you to map out your subject selection for the
duration of your program.
• Once you have selected all of your subjects for 2015, you will need to register for your classes.
This can be done through the student portal – go to the university homepage www.unimelb.edu.
au and select the ‘current students’ link to find your portal.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: SUBJECT
SELECTION
Which subjects do I have to take?
Please refer to the 2015 University Handbook when choosing subjects for your course. All students
need to complete the Core and Compulsory requirements of their course, in addition to choosing
suitable electives from the relevant course list in the Handbook.
Can I take electives outside of my course?
Students may be approved to select up to 12.5 credit points of electives, per 100 points of
program, outside of their course, however they must obtain written permission from both their
Course Coordinator and the relevant Subject Coordinator/s prior to enrolling. Students must
complete the online external subject form: https://security.arts.unimelb.edu.au/faculty/student_forms/

What if I’m having trouble enrolling, or the subject into which I want to enrol isn’t showing
up in my study plan?
Students experiencing problems enrolling in any of their subjects should complete the enrolment
request form: https://security.arts.unimelb.edu.au/faculty/student_forms/login.php
How many subject points count as full-time or part-time?
Full time load: 37.5 points to 50 points per semester
Part time load: 12.5 points to 25 points per semester
*International students must be enrolled full time and should be enrolled in 50 points per
semester, with a total of 100 points per year.

programs across the Humanities and Social Sciences. These are grouped into academic Schools in
the Faculty of Arts. Academic Schools provide information and advice for issues relating to lectures

Academic Skills Workshops
Academic Skills (http://services.unimelb.edu.au/academicskills) offers workshops and individual
tutorials on a wide range of academic skills, including how to research and write academic texts,
how best to prepare for exams, and how to give oral presentations. They help students maximise
their independent learning abilities, further develop their academic literacy, enhance their language
proficiency and develop some key graduate attributes.
In collaboration with the Graduate School, Academic Skills will run a workshop in Semester One
specifically designed for graduate coursework students in the Graduate School of Humanities and
Social Sciences.
Academic Skills runs many other workshops on academic writing, study skills and English language

Perspectives Career Seminar Series
The Perspectives series is designed to facilitate engagement and networking opportunities with
industry experts and HR consultants, many of whom are Faculty of Arts alumni. These experts
are invited to speak from their own experience about career development, emerging roles, and
transformations in a broad range of government, corporate and non-government sectors.
Highlights from last year included presentations on publishing and editing, with successful Faculty
of Arts and alumni from Allen & Unwin, Black Inc., and Scribe; on social entrepreneurship, with
speakers from The Social Studio, Pollinate Energy, and The Big Issue; and on careers in art
galleries and museums, with guests from the National Gallery of Victoria, Monash Art Gallery, and
Museum Victoria.

STUDENT SECURITY
Campus security patrols are available to escort you to your car, public transport, colleges or other
location in the near vicinity of Campus. This service is available to Staff and Students. It is
recommended that you pre book this service on 1800 246 066 (free call).
You can also download the Unisafe App for iphone or android at this page: http://pcs.unimelb.edu.au/
news_and_events/unisafe_app.html Students, staff and visitors can use the app to request a security
escort to or from campus, and can also access information about campus security services, health
services such as counselling, disability liaison and international student support.
The University has installed a number of blue emergency telephones around the campus for your
assistance. These telephones provide direct intercom access to Security and are monitored by Video
Surveillance. The telephones are activated by pressing the Emergency button.
Trained Wilson Security Officers also patrol the Parkville Campus 24 hours a day and are
responsible for the safety of the University community and the security of its property. In an
emergency, call 000 or 8344 6666 or 1800 246 066 (free call).
SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES
Faculty of Arts Ambassador Program
The Ambassador Program is designed to provide student leaders a key role in developing a strong
graduate student community in the Faculty of Arts, while promoting study opportunities for
international and domestic students across our range of courses.
The program is open to Masters by Coursework students who are keen to share their experiences
and provide leadership and mentoring to prospective and current students. The program offers
students the opportunity to develop professional leadership and communication skills by
representing the school at a range of public events. Ambassadors act as positive public role models,
sharing their experiences of the rewards and challenges of study at the Graduate School with new
and prospective students.
The recruitment process for 2015/16 Ambassadors will commence in April 2015. Successful
candidates will be expected to participate in the program for 12 months. During this time,
Ambassadors will be offered a chance to undertake training and development in areas such as
networking, leadership, and public speaking.

The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences works with an extensive range of industry
partners to offer project-based internship and work-integrated learning programs that are designed
to be of mutual benefit to our interns and the organisations in which they are placed.
Collaboration with industry enriches our teaching programs and provides students with
opportunities to network with industry practitioners and employers and apply their knowledge to
real-world situations, gaining invaluable experience.

The University of Melbourne houses several well-resourced libraries. The Baillieu Library is the
central and largest discipline library on the Parkville campus. It is located on Professor’s Walk,
Parkville Campus, and holds a number of collections in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.
The Library’s online guide (http://unimelb.libguides.com/content.php?pid=106639) provides
information about how to create a search strategy; a guide to referencing and ready-made resource
guides for individual disciplines (e.g. Australian Politics, Art History, Development Studies etc); and
advice on how to locate and use resources.
Each library guide and discipline also has a related staff member in the Arts Liaison Team, with a

Rowden White Library

The Rowden White Library, located in Union House, is a recreation library for all students to use,
with a diverse collection of contemporary books, comics, DVDs, journals, magazines, computer
games and music.
Special collections include romance, science fiction, fantasy and crime, and mystery novels. At
Rowden White students can also use the internet, have a snooze, listen to their favourite CDs in the
listening room, and/or borrow books and DVDs, all in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
Once you have obtained your student card, you can start borrowing from any of the libraries at the
University.

The University of Melbourne Student Portal allows students to access subject materials online,
check email, access library services, complete administration requirements and find out about
university services. You can find the portal by selecting the ‘Current Students’ link found at the

LMS (Learning Management System)
The LMS is an online space where students can find subject requirements, assessment information,
staff contact details, subject readings and lecture documents plus a range of tools that can
facilitate group and individual work including discussion forums, wikis, blogs, audio recordings
and tests. The LMS is accessed from the Student Portal or via the LMS website at: http://www.lms.

Connecting to wireless
The University of Melbourne’s wireless network is UniWireless. To access UniWireless you will need
your Portal username and password and a portable computing device (e.g. laptop or smartphone):

Loan Equipment
The School provides a range of IT equipment for student loan. This includes MacBook Pro laptops,
ipods and a range of digital recording and production equipment, specifically for the production of
high quality digital media projects.
