FINDING DRAMA EVERYWHERE: Bringing Nonfiction to Life
Melissa Richardson, Wolf Trap Master Teaching Artist
Every nonfiction topic is an exciting story waiting to happen. Children are gathering research everyday
through books, media and sensory observations. Discover strategies for collecting, sharing, and
celebrating this research as a classroom community. Telling and acting out stories encourages
teamwork, fosters creative thinking, reinforces vocabulary and helps children make connections in their
learning. Engage in drama games that connect the concepts of character, setting activity and plot to
virtually any curriculum topic. Investigate techniques for using children’s prior knowledge to create
nonfiction-inspired stories and bring them to life through movement and drama.

“AHA!” READING: Developing Artful Strategies to Create Prior Knowledge
Sue Trainor, Wolf Trap Master Teaching Artist
Explore and create multi-sensory music strategies designed to develop children’s prior knowledge about
story vocabulary, characters, setting, problem/solution. Children will experience the “aha!” feeling - a
deeper understanding of and connection with story content as they apply their knowledge to new
learning.

CRUISING THE CARIBBEAN AND BEYOND: Gateways to Teaching
Cultural Experiences
Terlene D. Terry-Todd, Wolf Trap Master Teaching Artist
Join Ms. T on a trip to the sunny West Indies, a journey full of songs, dances and stories. Participants
take an imaginary voyage to the seashore and a Caribbean market place while exploring props and
costumes which bring songs and dances from the Caribbean to life. Whether used as part of a
multicultural unit or to reinforce gross motor, counting, sequencing, verbal or other skills, the
experiences presented in this workshop fit beautifully into the early childhood curriculum. This workshop
provides participants with examples of strategies and techniques that could be adapted to explore other
cultural content.

Imagine, Believe, Achieve - Inclusive Activities for Language and Early
Literacy
Sally Mastroberti, AACPS, Special Educator
Celebrate and identify individual differences as it relates to language and early literacy. Plan for
differentiated instruction based on a child’s needs given the five pre-literacy best practices; Reading,
Talking, Singing, Playing and Writing. Explore and design accessible materials, environments and
instruction for inclusion.

Taking Story Times Beyond the Ordinary
Laura Lieberman and Sandy Owen
Anne Arundel County Public Library
Join us as we share recently published picture books that emphasize language and early literacy skills.
Participants will apply the early literacy components; Reading, Talking, Singing, Playing, and Writing
while discovering new titles. New songs, finger-plays, flannel and picture walks will be introduced and
practiced. Hands on craft activities will be explored as well as new apps and websites, all designed to
help lay a solid early childhood foundation.

Creating a Literacy Rich Environment
Amy E. Weaver, Educational Consultant
This session provides information on developmentally appropriate preschool literacy learning
experiences. The training will provide professional terminology and practices to create a positive literacy
rich classroom that uses authentic reading and writing experiences for preschool children. Explore
budget friendly authentic materials to enrich language experiences and encourage learning in all
domains.

Baby Talk
Deborah Wood, Ph.D., Child Development Specialist
Baby Talk is a workshop developed to enhance communication with American Sign Language. Use your
hands! Learn about basic vocabulary in American Sign Language to support communication between
you and the youngest children enrolled in your program. This workshop covers the normal milestones of
language in children from birth through age 3, stressing how language is “caught” by providing a rich
verbal environment and not “taught” in carefully laid out lessons. Activities are exampled - conversation,
books, nursery rhymes and ASL.

Jumping Off the Page: Storytelling and Literacy for Early Learners
Diane Macklin, Storyteller
Reading to children opens up a world of understanding and ignites their imaginations. Telling a story
using a book, adds an engaging and fun element to written text that reading alone struggles to achieve.
Learn methods of storytelling that incorporates chants, songs, movement, or other forms of audience
participation to add zest to test!
Dress in layers due to temperature variations.
