See What God is About To Accomplish Through APC

Stewardship/Discipleship Sunday is May 3
This year APC has undertaken a new approach to its
stewardship/discipleship emphasis.
It began by the
congregation first demonstrating a commitment to helping
others. Three mission projects starting, literally, from the
ground up have been underway. A shoe drive for
Soles4Souls has been very successful.Next was a clothing
drive for DenverWorks which provides interview and
work clothes for those in need. Lastly, is a head start on the
Arvada Community Food Bank Postal Food Drive
(officially May 9): the congregation is receiving blue
grocery bags to fill and return on May 3. Through these
mission projects APC can already begin to see what God
can accomplish through the congregation as reflected in the
scriptural theme for this year from Ephesians 3:20:
“Now to Him who by the power at work within us is able to
accomplish abundantly far more than we can ask or imagine, to
Him be glory . . .”
Sunday, May 3, will also be the culmination of the
Stewardship/Discipleship emphasis this spring. On that
Sunday you are asked to submit your Estimate of Giving
card for fiscal 2015-16. The Stewardship Team encourages
you to prayerfully consider your response to the question,
“What portion of my income is God calling me to give?” A
helpful chart is also included in this issue for your use in
answering this question.
Everyone who completes an Estimate of Giving card
does so voluntarily. All are encouraged to attend the
service on May 3 even if you do not intend to complete a
card. Again this year there will be no home solicitation but
there will be follow-up by mail with those who do not
submit a card by May 3.
Following the service on that Sunday, APC will also
celebrate, with cake, what we have already accomplished
and what we can hope to accomplish in the coming year
with God’s help.
On behalf of the Stewardship and Discipleship Teams,
thank you for your enthusiastic participation in our mission
projects and Stewardship/Discipleship Sunday.

Golfers!
Grab your clubs and put on your cleats for a good cause!
Arvada Presbyterian has been a supporter of the
Second Wind Fund for many years. APC is one of the
founding churches in the Presbyterians for Second Wind
Fund Ministry Partnership. The Second Wind Fund works
to prevent youth suicide by providing access to treatment.
One of their main fundraising events is the Second
Wind Fund Walk/Run that occurs in September. But did
you know they also have a fundraising golf tournament?
The 4th Annual Second Wind Fund golf tournament is
coming up on Friday, June 19!

Join in for a wonderful golf outing for an amazing
cause! Help raise funds to provide life-saving services to
children and teens at risk of suicide through the Second

New Members
In recent months, APC has
welcomed a number of new members.
Below is some information to help
you get to know them.
William Atencio lives in Arvada
and really enjoys greeting people at
church and helping the Maintainers.
He works at Sustainability. He likes
spending time with Gloria, who
joined APC at the same time he did.
William’s favorite activities include
watching movies, bowling, bingo and
riding his bicycle.
Dina Book was raised in Arvada.
She was a “cradle baby” at APC and
has been involved with the church for
twenty-four years. She graduated
from Arvada High School, is married
and has raised five children. She is
glad to be reunited with APC; it’s like
coming home for her!
Gary Book is retired. He enjoys
golfing, gardening, reading, walking,
and
especially,
watching
the
grandkids.
Dawn Haskell is 35 years old and
has lived in Denver for the past ten
years. She lives with her husband,
Frank, her mother-in-law, Jo, and their
many four-legged children. She loves
being the director of the All Precious
Children Learning Center at APC and
plans to graduate with her Early
Childhood Education Degree in May.
Her
favorite
activities
include
watching movies and working
outside in the yard. She is excited
about joining APC and looks forward
to many years of love and learning in
the light of the Lord!
Jacomma (Meithy) Kandijoh has
three brothers and is the youngest in
her family. She comes from North
Sulawesi, Indonesia and she worked
in Jakarta, the capital city. She also
worked
at
Perhimpunan
Persahabatan Indonesia America (The
4
Indonesian American Friendship
Association, which is not the Yayasan
Lia). Meithy worked in Yayasan Lia
for almost twenty years. She and
John (Max) Manoy (see his bio further
down the page) married in 1994. Max
came to the USA in 1999 and Meithy
and David joined him two years later
in 2001. Meithy was previously a
member of Marturia Presbyterian
Church
in
Rochester,
New
Hampshire.
Sally Jo Kolar loves to garden,
walk her dog daily (weather
permitting) and swim. She has two
children. One of them is a teacher
and one is in finance. She also has
two grandsons. One is in the Army
and the other is in the Navy. She also
has one granddaughter. Sally is a
Colorado native.
Eldon Laidig is a retired junior
high school principal with Jefferson
County Schools. He is a partner in
Personal Benefit Services Wealth
Management, a financial planning
firm. He is active in community
service and is involved with helping
The Arvada Center, Arvada Vitality
Alliance, Bessie’s Hope, the Arvada
Chamber of Commerce, and Arvada
Rotary. He is also a retired captain in
the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve.
Lynn Laidig has been married to
Eldon for five years. She volunteers at
the Arvada Center as a docent. She
also gives tours of the art galleries
and history museum. She’s a member
of the Arvada Historical Society. Each
June, she helps with the Garden Tour,
where she is in charge of selling bird
houses.
She and Eldon enjoy
traveling and reading. They have a
little dog named Toby. Lynn gets her
exercise walking him since they have
a new home with no fenced yard.
Lynn comes to APC from St.
Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in
Boulder where she was an elder and a
deacon.
David Manoy went to elementary
school, middle school and began high
school in Dover, New Hampshire.
Two years ago, the Manoy family
moved to Arvada. David is a junior at
Arvada West High School.
John (Max) Manoy came to the
U.S. in 1999. He lived and worked in
New Jersey for two years and then
moved to New Hampshire where he
worked for almost twelve years. He
joined the Marturia Presbyterian
Church
in
Rochester,
New
Hampshire.
Alvan (Al) Morrison is a Denver
native who graduated from South
Denver High School. He is a World
War II veteran from the Army. He
graduated from the University of
Denver with a BA and an LLB. He
worked
thirty-five
years
in
commercial real estate lending. Al
grew up as a Baptist, but has ancestral
ties to the Presbyterian Church. He is
married to Roberta (Bobbie), who is a
member of APC.
Al has two
handicapped sons, both with Fragile
X Syndrome. He is active in ARC of
Jefferson County and he’s on the
board of ARC Thrift Store.
Gloria Rawson attends church
every Sunday.
She works at
Sustainability.
She likes sewing
things, including purses and stuffed
animals, which she gives away to
people who need them or would like
them. She enjoys going out with her
sweetheart to movies and dinner.
Doug Oltmanns has attended
APC for a long time, even though he
is originally from Ohio. He grew up
and was baptized here. His mother

Linda Sattig was fortunate
enough to live the first half of her life
in many states. In 1980 she moved to
Colorado. For twenty years she was a
career engineering designer. After
that, she started a successful business
and still works there part-time. Linda
has two children, three grandchildren
and one great-grandson.
She has
attended APC since moving here. Her
children and grandchildren have
attended Vacation Bible School and
Sunday School at APC for many years.
Linda was inspired to join APC after

She
decided it was time to join and
become a part of this church family,
and she’s grateful to APC for this
opportunity and blessing.
Rusty Vlaanderen grew up at
APC and he went through the
confirmation class in 1984. He has
worked at Target at 80th and
Wadsworth for over fifteen years. He
faithfully attends the New Beginnings
Sunday School Class. Rusty enjoys
dogs.

entering into a first Mortgage/
Deed of Trust and Promissory
Note with the Presbyterian
Church (U S A), A Corporation
("CLP"), in the amount of
$150,000.00 for the purpose of
projected capital improvement
projects. In addition to this, it
was agreed that after the
Presbyterian Investment Loan
Program (PILP) application is
applied for and before a PILP loan
is executed, Arvada Presbyterian
Church (APC) will request its
members to loan APC $150,000.00
at 0.5% less than the PILP loan
rate. It was agreed that this
would allow APC members to
earn a premium on their money
loaned to APC and reduce the

Bible School
Help Wanted

VBS at Arvada Presbyterian will be held July 12 - 17, 9 A.M.
until 4 P.M. at APC’s partner church, Wheat Ridge Presbyterian
(9180 W. 38th Avenue). Highland’s Camp will work with the
group again this year, since last year was such a great time,
and the program will be the same. Volunteers are needed for
the following positions:
group leaders, assistant group
leaders, set-up crew, clean-up crew, “Floaters (people who are
willing to move to any position where extra help is needed
each day), and snack preparation people. Also needed are
tents. Can you help? If so, please call Heidi Meredith at 720
341-1136. If you are unable to volunteer but would still like to
contribute, watch for further posts, as many snack donations
will be needed.
VBS leadership is excited about this year and looks
forward to working with you, and is certain you will enjoy
working with all the great kids!
Scholarship Fund is off to a Great Start

WOW! The congregation has responded so quickly and
generously! You have donated just over $2500! The newly
established scholarship fund is to provide some financial
support for someone in need in this congregation, someone
who has made a significant contribution to the life of the
church. The committee has met and decided that it will put
part of the money in a bond fund and part of the money in an
index fund. The fund needs to have $3000 if the committee is to
set up a fund that can be separately tracked so -- are almost
there! Thank you and please continue your generous support.

Library Notes

The featured books this month were purchased with funds from
the Anne Girand memorial. These are the last books purchased with
these funds.
DAVID AND GOLIATH by Malcolm Gladwell is
about underdogs, misfits, and battles against
what seem to be giants in the situations of
life. He challenges the readers about how we
think about obstacles, arguing that
advantages are sometimes disadvantages
and
conversely,
disadvantages
are
sometimes advantages. He uses history,
psychology, and a knack for story telling in a
number of examples about different people
to support his premise. His analysis of the
encounter of David and Goliath is especially
interesting. Gladwell is the author of several
other books including OUTLIERS which has
been on the Tattered Cover Best Seller List of
Business Books for many months.
PALESTINE PEACE NOT APARTHEID was
written by Jimmy Carter, 39th U.S.
President. The book begins with a time line
of the history of Israel starting with the
travel of Abram from Ur to Canaan in about
1900 BC and ending in 2006 at the time the
book was published. The year 2006 was
typical for the area: Hamas and Hezbollah
militants captured Israeli soldiers, Israeli
forces attacked Gaza and Lebanon,
Hezbollah missiles hit northern Israel, and
the United Nations established yet another
fragile cease fire. The author favors the twostate solution, but believes this will happen
only if Israel withdraws to its 1967 borders.
These books will be on the rack in the
Narthex for the month and thereafter on the library shelves under

Bible Builders

May is the last month Bible Builders will
meet until September. The group will be looking
at resources such as Study Bibles like the
resources in Adventure Bibles, concordances,
Bible Dictionaries, and Bible Atlases to help with
lessons. It is also the time when BB make little
tray decorations for people in a nursing home
and deliver them one day after school. There is
also Mother's Day in this month so the group will
be making her a little favor too.
It has been such a pleasure working with
these boys and girls and watching them grow.
Next year Bible Builders will be making Advent
Trees with decorations representing important
people and events in Jesus' background. Most of
these people and events are from the Old
Testament. Thanks to Karen Baer for the idea.

Arvada Presbyterian Women hosted the
February birthday party for residents of
Colorado Lutheran Home. Strummers provided
a musical program.
The residents enjoyed
humming and singing along. Birthday cards and small gifts were given to
each resident who celebrated a birthday in February. Angel food cake,
cookies and conversation completed the day’s festivities.

PW will again be supporting Arvada Wheat Ridge Service Ambassadors
for Youth (AWESAY) with a $200 donation to their scholarship fund for Red
Rocks Community College. These scholarships are awarded to youth who
have worked to overcome adversity in their lives.
PW continues to support APC’s tiny scholars by collecting Boxtops for
Education and Labels for Education for the All Precious Children Learning
Center. The congregation is invited to participate with PW in this project. A
long list of products which carry the labels can be found at
www.labelsforeducation.com and www.boxtops4education.com. If you
need a copy of the participating products (some of which are guaranteed to
be in your cupboards right now), contact Velma Whitney or Mary
Stackhouse. Place your labels in the basket on the table next to the upstairs
kitchen.

Circles meet the third week of the month with Priscilla and Rebekah Circles
taking a break during June, July and August. Elizabeth Circle meets

Gardeners! Grab Your Gloves,
Put on Your Garden Boots and Slap on Some Sunscreen!

It has been a strange spring but planting time for the APC Community
Garden will soon be here.
The APC Community Garden will have a late planting date – Saturday, May
30 at 8:30 A.M. Anyone who wishes to dig around in the dirt is welcome!

The gardeners plant late for two reasons. First, the last freeze date can be
unpredictable. New transplants or newly sprouted seeds rarely survive a
freeze. Second, once the garden is planted, it needs to be watered to thrive.
APC’s garden tends to dry out, perhaps because it is located on the top of a
hill. Regular watering is important. In the past, gardeners have had few
volunteers watering the garden and had to spread out the watering days.
Last year gardeners watered the garden four days a week because there were
only three volunteers. Ideally, it should be watered every day, especially
during the hot part of the summer.
This is the first summer that the APC Community
Garden has been part of the Mission and Peacemaking
Ministry. Support is welcome in whatever form it may come.
Plants: Thanks to a donation for the garden, seeds for
carrots, shorty carrots, green beans, radishes, and corn
(maybe this year there will actually be ears) have been
purchased.
The garden could use donations of plants ready to
transplant: broccoli, squash, cucumbers, peppers, etc.
Equipment: Last year the hose sprung a leak, so a
replacement hose would be welcome. It doesn’t have to be
new, but gardeners would prefer it to be hole-free.

The garden will need additional compost to amend the
beds before planting. There is a compost bin, but it is not sufficient to amend all the beds.
Volunteers:
Planting help: Volunteers are needed to help plant on May
30."
Watering help: Help will be needed throughout the growing season to
keep the garden watered.
Harvest help: When the plants start producing, volunteers will be
needed to pick and transport the produce to the Arvada Community
Food Bank.

Parlor Display of Needlework

Please take time to view the new needle work display
in the parlor. Thanks to those who were willing to share
their heirlooms. Muriel Frink contributed several items,
among which is a needlepoint representation of a turtle
created by her daughter. There is a Sampler by Debbie
Hutton contributed by Dina Book. Dina also brought for
display some small pansy designs, one by Andra
completed at the age of 9-½ in 1974. Barbara Rathbun
submitted three framed pieces of crewel embroidery, two
by her Aunt Doe and one by her Mother. Also provided is
a large basket of delicious looking strawberries by Dina
Book.
Fred Haas, age 90, passed
away on March 16, 2015. His services were held at
Fort Logan National
Cemetery, and Allnutt
Funeral Services in Estes
Park handled the
arrangements. Please

on Our Life Together

Imagination
A friend and colleague shared some inspired words and thoughts, which I borrowed and use here with my own
memories and interpretations.
One of my strongest childhood memories is reading for the first time the pages of C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia.
As I read each volume and finished the last page, I couldn’t wait for the next. As I finished the series, I felt tears welling
up inside. It was such a beautiful and amazing story that I didn’t want it to end. Those characters had become real to me,
companions during days of youth. In fact, Lewis’ brilliance created an entire world, a world that seemed real, perhaps
more real than the one in which I was living. Many of you, can relate through other books, like the Harry Potter series.
Imagination is a powerful force and a wondrous gift. We tend to equate imagination with childhood or with a few
“artistic types.” Imagination is often like the games, the dolls, the toys we leave behind as the years pass. What a great loss
that is for us! Imagination, along with hope, can give great depth and meaning to life. It is the ability to see beyond the
confines of the present moment and present arrangements to a future that is different and richer. Imagination can help
unstick us from thinking that says that the way it is right now is the way it will be always, or perhaps even that the way it
has been is the way it must be forever.
As you may have gathered, the theme for our stewardship emphasis this year focuses upon “imagination,” using
Ephesians 3:20-21 as a guide. “God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or

“Imagine” isn’t just a slogan, but it is a way of life toward which we in the church are directed. Because the power of
love has defeated death, because the one who was dead has been raised, we are invited, if not compelled, to imagine a
new creation. There are possibilities beyond our small expectations -- possibilities that exist because of the imagination of
God. Imagine this congregation growing to become even more of what God has in mind for us on this hill, in this
community, for those God places in our path. Imagine this church growing as a healing presence for those who are lonely,
those who have addiction issues, those who are searching for meaning, those who are seeking work, those who need help
with living or eating or medical concerns, those who want their children to have a solid foundation on which to build
their lives, those responding to their longing to connect with God, and the list goes on.
As the church of Jesus Christ, we regularly exercise our imaginations. But we're not about just any kind of
imagination, we are trying in some way to catch a glimpse of -- or gain some insight into -- the imagination of God. What
is the God we experience in Jesus Christ imagining for this congregation, for each of us as disciples or apostles? Just
imagine being an essential part of growing into the imagination of God for this church. It’s not that big a stretch. You can
be a part of that dream as you participate and give financially. It’s not the amount that is primary, but the willingness to
give something, to contribute as you are able. Giving together, giving as a community of faith, with each one of us playing
our part, makes it possible for us to imagine, and live into, a new and different tomorrow for The Church of Jesus Christ at
Arvada Presbyterian.
On Sunday, May 3 we will, as a community of faith, offer to God our commitments for the new fiscal year. As you
prepare in the next few weeks, I encourage you to give some thought and prayer to what you believe God is calling this
church to be and do. Your giving can be a part of God's dream becoming reality at APC.
Perhaps my friend has a better imagination than I, or perhaps, just perhaps, God’s imagination is already working in
the location where Christ has placed us. Friends, we have the privilege and the opportunity to tell a beautiful and
amazing story – here in this place!
