athletic director, teacher, coach and official in Alaska, has been hired to join the ASAA staff beginning
August 1, 2015.

throughout the State of Alaska and brings a great deal of experience and knowledge to the job. We feel
the addition of Sandi will improve ASAA’s ability to serve our member schools,” said Billy Strickland,
ASAA Executive Director.
Sandi graduated from the University of Washington with a Master of Science degree – Exercise
Physiology and Endorsement in Sports Management after completing her Bachelor of Arts-Education
degree at Arizona State University. Sandi has been involved in high school activities, in Southeast
Alaska since 1984 until the present. She has coached state championship soccer and volleyball teams as
well as girls basketball and swim teams; taught in the class room in the middle school and JuneauDouglas High School from 1987-2012; overseen coaches education throughout Southeast Alaska; served
on the ASAA Board of Directors for six years; served as the Region 5 President for 12 years throughout
her 30 years of combined experience.
As the Athletic and Activities Director for the Juneau–Douglas School District, for two high schools, she
has directed 120 coaches, Advisors and four assistants; managed 61 District Activities in the two high
schools; managed financial operations at the District level and maintained and scheduled facilities in the
two high schools. During her tenure as Region 5 President she has scheduled and managed all meetings
and brought the Region into financial stability.
Sandi brings energy, enthusiasm and passion for high school activities into her position as Associate
Director. Sandi expressed that she believes her organization, consensus building and communication
skills, coupled with her work ethic are an ideal match as a new member on the ASAA staff.

Alaska School Activities Association is Alaska’s high school organization established to regulate sanctioned interscholastic activities, contests and programs. ASAA’s mission is to advocate participation in co-­‐curricular activities and promote the academic and social development of students. Over 210 high schools and 35,000 high school students participate each year in interscholastic activities. The ASAA staff manages 36 state championships each year in athletics, fine arts, academics and student government. ASAA’s newest program has been the development of the Play for Keeps, Win for Life program that emphasizes healthy student citizens. ASAA also assists schools in finding the most talented coaches through the Alaska Coaches Education Program and certifies sports officials. ASAA was established in 1956 and is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of one elected member from each region and one appointed member from the Alaska Association of School Boards, Alaska Association of Student Governments, and Alaska Association of School Administrators.
