Solent Cruising Group Poole Cruise 2015 14-22 August FIRST DRAFT Up-dated: 24.03.15 This is a free-spirit get together, using the SCG for communication, open to all. There are no formalities or fees. If you turn up you are part of it, If you don’t, you won’t be! Having said that, it would be helpful if you could let me know if you are going to join in so that I can produce a ‘Fleet Muster’ for easy communication. All I need to know is: Skipper’s name Boat name & type Mobile number e.mail address SELF-SUFFICIENCY You will need to be self-sufficient for the time in Poole, sustaining yourselves for the duration in respect of shelter, food, water, fuel & sanitary facilities. There will only be limited access to ‘civilization’. Foraging will absorb social time! THE PLAN The Ashlett Sailing Club are holding their Regatta on Saturday 15 August. It is a low key fun day with a good social & live music in the evening. The ASC Drascombers have been asked to join in & it would be nice to do so. All visiting Drascombes will also be welcome so the Poole Cruise will be anchored to that. Friday 14.08.15 Launch at Ashlett & overnight on the pontoon. You will need to be launched by about 14.00. Saturday 15.08.15 Drascombes arriving by sea will be able to access the pontoons about 2 hours either side of High Water but it will not be possible to launch from the slip as the hard may well be closed for preparation/frivolities. A wonderful belly-buster breakfast is available at The Mill for about £7.00 but needs to be pre-arranged the night before. Regatta. (Please dress boats overall. Last year there was a competition, in which Dick Pizey’s Daislebee was top Drascombe by a pair of underpants but flags & bunting preferred!). Evening Social. Sunday 16.08.15 Depart Ashlett Creek at around 13.15 (1st HW. The tide starts to ebb off Calshot at HW Portsmouth -1, 13.30-1 = 12.30.) Page 1 of 4 Overnight at anchor in Newtown Creek. Alternative plan would be to go into Yarmouth. Greater expense set against easier run to Hurst the following morning. Monday 17.08.15 Cruise to Studland & anchor/beach under the cliff close to The Banks Arms. High Water at Hurst Point will be at 13.00 with zero tidal flow. At 13.25, the ebb will be underway. It is 6 NM from Newtown to Hurst Narrows. Leave Newtown at 11.00 & be prepared to fight the tide to Hurst. Distance to Studland is approx 16 NM, thus ETA 18.00 Tuesday 18.08.15 Cruise around Studland & into Poole Harbour. Enter Poole around to avoid fighting the tide in, anchor for the night at Blood Alley around . Wednesday 19.08.15 Sail in harbour & overnight there or get out to Studland & overnight there. Thursday 20.08.15 Leave Poole around 09.30. Cruise to Christchurch & overnight there. Poole to Christchurch is 9 NM. Christchurch HW: 16.25. # Bournemouth Air Show is 20-23 August & would be excellent viewed from the sea so a slow trip to Christchurch (by design) may be worth contemplating if conditions permit. Friday 21.08.15 Depart by 12.00. Distance to Hurst Narrows: 8 NM. HW is 15.50. Overnight in Yarmouth (if we can get in) or make for Keyhaven Saturday 22.08.15 Return to Ashlett. 1st HW is 16.34. Alternative: head for Shepards Wharf, Cowes. Sunday 23.08.15 Return to Ashlett. 1st HW is 17.27 This is a very preliminary itinery. It can be stretched/modified to suit time available & inclination. This could be any beach or bay within the harbour. Our proposed rendezvous will be on the South West part of Brownsea Island just off the entrance to Blood Alley, probably over-nighting at anchor there. The Wednesday overnight location will be decided as the get-together unrolls or unravels but we may try to get out to Studland & overnight there. Poole Harbour has a double high tide with a long stand between, except at neap tides. As a result, the ebb is quite brief & produces very strong tides. This is particularly prevalent in the harbour mouth & great care is necessary. The stand dips slightly so you will note a ‘low tide’ between that is almost at high tide levels. Poole tidal curves defy logic or tabulation so Brad has provided these tidal diagrams: XXXXX LAUNCHING & RECOVERY Potential launching points into Poole harbour for anyone not wanting to cruise in & out are: Page 3 of 4 Rockley Point Ridge Wharf Yacht Centre Redcliffe Farm Wareham BH20 5BE 01929 550258 www.redcliffefarmcamping.co.uk Another alternative is Baiter Point but it is very flat & shallow & can be difficult. Parking is available on site there but is thought to be high risk. There are also other yacht clubs/marinas around the harbour but I have no idea on their visitors policies. VHF If you have a VHF, we shall use Channel 77. (Or mobile phone. Do we have your number?) CHARTS Essential - lots of shallow water in Poole Harbour! Do get an up to date one.
