Raising money for the Sports Leaders programme, 5 dedicated
Year 12 Sports Leaders took on the largest Underground system
in the world and won!
Starting at 05.15 on Saturday 7th February at Chesham tube
station, the plan was to go to EVERY one of the network’s 270
stations in one day. Not only was the team travelling around the
250 miles of track all day, but they ran 14 miles throughout the
day, linking the extreme stations on the network.
The team completed their journey at Heathrow Terminal 5 at
23.58, completing this epic journey in a mammoth time of 18
hours and 43 minutes!
Mr Jones says, “To state that it was hard was an
understatement. To keep ahead of schedule and catch all
connections in the right order took a great deal of
organisation. However, it paid off as we actually finished
21 minutes ahead of schedule and really did manage to do
it in one day (albeit by 2 minutes!). The leaders and I all
k
found the running
incredibly hard but they were an
j
absolute
credit to Ashlyns. They persevered and showed
j
the true
determination that makes them the inspirational
k
leaders they are. We were all “buzzing” at the end to know
that we had completed every station on what is the largest
underground system in the world!”
May we take this opportunity to thank publicly everyone
who supported our great programme and donated to this
cause to reach a fantastic figure of £870. Mr Jones would
also like to say thank you to Mr Peters, who so kindly came
to collect our shattered group in the small hours of
Sunday morning. This was far beyond the call of duty and
we were very grateful.
Sports Leadership Academy of the Year Award – Invite
As you know, Ashlyns School was awarded Sports Leaders
Academy status in March 2014 by Sports Leaders UK. One
year on, with so much going on with the programme, we
have been invited to apply for the Sports Leaders School
of the Year 2015. A 5 minute video outlining our Sports
Programme here at Ashlyns needs to be submitted by
Thursday 2nd April. Winning this award against stiff
competition from nine other schools would be an incredible
achievement, but one that we feel would be deserved
because of the incredible work our Leaders do for our
school. Watch this space!

Year 7 Young Leaders Award Commences
36 Year 7 students have started the Young Leaders
Award offered by the PE Department. The Young Leaders
Award is an introduction to leading, planning and
officiating across a range of sports.
The students, who started on Friday 23rd January 2015,
have completed various aspects of leadership, including
communication, planning and leading a sports session.
Their award is now finished as they have completed two
sports sessions at Westfield and Greenway Schools. The
Year 7 leaders were a true credit to Ashlyns School as
they delivered safe and hugely enjoyable sessions.
Year 4 & 5 Westfield School Tag Rugby Sessions in action
10 female Sports Leaders are independently running Tag
Rugby lessons for girls at Westfield School. Running 4
sessions in total, the Leaders are developing new and existing
skills in the girls of the Year 4 and 5 classes.
Mrs Kelly (Year 1 class teacher from Westfield) stated
that “every leader made a huge effort to make their
activity personable and fun for her students”.
Congratulations to all students who took part. It was
wonderful to witness!
Mr Jones comments, “There has been a push on increasing
female rugby recently and our Sports Leaders are single
handedly preparing and delivering lessons to ensure that the
younger generation is given the opportunity to participate.
This will hopefully encourage more participation within the
sport in later life.”
Headteacher of Westfield School, Suzanne Stace, stated,
“Firstly I don't know who enjoyed the Rugby most yesterday our girls or your Leaders! They all had a great time and as
always your students were brilliant and very well prepared.”
Well done Leaders – always doing what you do best!
Making Headlines!
12 Year 8, 9 & 10 leaders have made local headlines this term
by spending 3 sessions with Ashlyns Care Home in a brand new
initiative. The students have been interacting with the
residents, who range in age from 75 to 103, by playing board
games and sharing stories.
Year 8 students Molly Jeffries and Chloe Chamberlain
summed it up beautifully by saying that “we walked in there as
acquaintances and came out as friends. We have had an
amazing experience and wish them well in the future”.

Bridgewater Cross Country
Our Leaders worked overtime on Saturday 17th January
2015 to help at the annual Bridgewater School Cross
Country event. Despite cold conditions, our students
worked very hard to make sure the event ran smoothly,
acting as marshals and “hares” to the Year 3-6
competitors. Without their input, these events would not
be not possible. Special thanks to Harry Sanders, Sophie
Ambrose, Joel James, Daniel Stace, Skye Berryman (Year
7), Emily Alderson (Year 8), Ellen Northwood & Maddie
Kiernan (Year 9), Jake Alderson & Emily Bannister (Year
10), Amber Davies & Dan Macey (Year 11).

Sports Link Programme Off to a Flyer!
Berkhamsted Sports Leaders Website
The Sports Link programme, which was introduced last term
but officially began in January, has got off to an absolutely
flying start. The initiative, which was designed to create
further links between the feeder schools and Ashlyns, has
proven to do exactly that. Four Sports Leaders
(Ambassadors) are assigned to each school, and in most cases
this is the school they previously attended. Our Sports
Ambassadors have given up much time to provide extended
opportunities to the students of the feeder schools.
Some wonderful comments have been received about our
students, including the following from St Thomas More
School: “The main reason for the email is to say how
impressed I have been with our ambassadors and after the
first basketball club session tonight, I was pleased with the
confidence they showed in taking the activities. Thank you
for the opportunity to work with the girls and I hope that we
can continue to be affiliated with your Sports Leaders
scheme in the future”.
The Sports Leaders very own website has been
rejuvenated by our Website Officer, David Scoot of the
Year 12 Sports Leaders Council. It has been updated and
“sharpened up” and looks absolutely terrific.
Please take a look at it and feel free to comment to either
Mr Jones or David Scoot on any suggestions you may have.

Greenway Tag Rugby Festival
10 Sports Leaders helped run the Greenway Tag Rugby
festival held in March. 5 female and 5 male Sports Leaders
helped with the officiating and the organisation of the
multi-team event.
Well done to all those students involved. Without you this
event would not have been such a success.
