President's message
April 10, 2015
We had a great turnout of over 50 people at our breakfast membership meeting
yesterday. Illa Gilbert-Jones gave a presentation about the purpose and
resources available from Oregon Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (ORFACE). Employees and supervisors alike find that learning about real life stories,
although tragic because of the severity, can make a difference in your attitude
and approach to safety at work and at home. I encourage you to search for and
use some of the excellent videos, reports, and other resources available through
OR-FACE.
Another successful Governor’s Occupational Safety and Health (GOSH) conference last month
helped provide many hours of professional development and networking for our members and the
safety community. The conference is also a big part of providing financial stability to our Chapter
and Sections. Here is a list of drawing winners from the GOSH Conference:
• Ken Beard of Hampton Lumber Mills, Inc. won the free ASSE membership.
• Allison Zsenynuk of Salem Hospital and Rob Dahl of the Oregon Zoo each won a copy of
ASSE’s Safety Engineering book.
• James Owen of Hewlett Packard won the iPad mini for turning in his overall conference
evaluation sheet.
It has been a few months since I included a “safety note”, so here is a new one. I encourage each of
you to use this as a safety toolbox topic at your work place, school, home, or wherever you may be.
Complacency
Complacency is a feeling of contentment or self-satisfaction, especially when coupled with not being
aware of danger, trouble, or controversy. Do not allow yourself to be complacent while at work, as
this is when accidents are more likely to happen. Let’s all work safely and look out for one another.

In Memoriam
David Leo White, Sr. a long time safety
professional passed away on March 26, 2015.
In the spring of 1960 David startied his career
with Oregon Highway Department. He spent
the next 32 years working in various capacities
and finished his career as ODOT Safety
Manager in Salem, Oregon. Upon retiring
from ODOT in 1993 he started a consulting
company, D and D Safety Consultants;
he continued to be the Master Trainer for
ODOT flagger trainers, as the Traffic Control
Supervisor Trainer, he wrote and delivered
training materials for Evergreen Safety
Council and was employed by ODOT T-2 as
a Circuit Rider, where he provided safety
training to City and County employees until
his death. In the capacity of an employee,
consultant and trainer he worked for Oregon
Department of Transportation for over 50

National Safety Stand-Down and Construction
Fall Prevention Campaign
T
he 2015 National Safety Stand-Down and Construction Fall Prevention Campaign is planned for May
4-15. Falls are the leading cause of death in construction, with more than 200 deaths and over
10,000 serious injuries each year in the United States. These deaths and injuries are preventable.
The annual Campaign began in 2012. Last year over one million employers and workers across the
country joined last year’s week-long Fall Safety Stand-Down, making it the largest occupational safety
event ever hosted in the U.S. Building on last year’s unprecedented participation, let us triple the
numbers over the two weeks this year. Employers can
receive formal recognition for participating in the StandDown if they complete a small online questionnaire
and print their “Certificate of Participation.” While
participation in the Stand-Down is entirely voluntary,
employers are encouraged to take advantage of this
unique opportunity.
The 2015 Stand-Down coincides with the North
American Occupational Safety and Health Week
sponsored by the American Society of Safety Engineers
(ASSE), and with the National Construction Industry
Safety Week May 4-8, representing a joint construction
industry effort around fall protection awareness. OSHA
and NIOSH are partnering with CPWR—The Center for
Construction Research and Training, organizations within
the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA)
Construction Sector Council, OSHA-approved State
Plans, state consultation programs, the National Safety
Council, the National Construction Safety Executives
(NCSE), the United States Air Force Ground Safety, and
the OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Centers.
During the two-week period have open discussions
with your workers about falls and how to prevent
them. Please help promote the Stand-Down and the
Construction Fall Prevention Campaign by raising
awareness among employers and workers about fall
hazards, and by providing information they can use to
prevent injury and death. Raise awareness about the
hazards of falls from ladders, scaffolds and roofs, and
be part of a concerted effort throughout the nation to
reduce the number of deaths and injuries that result
from falls in construction. The simple message—Safety
Pays, Falls Cost continues to be both relevant and
timely.

Pendleton to host Blue Mountain safety conference
ConAgra Foods safety expert to share success strategies
E
mployers and workers are invited to attend the annual Blue Mountain Occupational Safety and
Health Conference in Pendleton. The event is scheduled for June 2, 2015, at the Pendleton
Convention Center and will highlight a variety of safety and health topics.
Oregon’s Occupational Safety and Health Division (Oregon OSHA), a division of the Department of
Consumer and Business Services, encourages employees and employers to attend this event to help
improve safety and health performance. Strengthening the workplace safety culture contributes to
reduced injuries and accidents, and decreased workers’ compensation costs.
Keynote speaker Keith Bardney, senior director of safety at ConAgra Foods, has spent most of his
career in various businesses sharing coaching techniques with front-line supervisors and other
strategies that bring about real change. His leadership skills have produced world-class cultures
with safety as a value, not a priority.
“As a manufacturing leader himself, Keith knows how to change the game of ‘safety first’ to safely
producing a quality product efficiently and injury free,” said Tony Campbell, director of safety for
ConAgra Foods. “Help your front line leaders begin to guide all employees toward working safely for
