Additionally, 35 young leaders under age 40 (Youngens) who are doing impactful work at, for, or around Mohammed Schools will also be celebrated. Mohammed Schools of Atlanta originally opened in 1965 as the University of Islam, closed in 1977, and reopened in 1980 with a new vision and new direction under the new leadership of Imam W.D. Mohammed. The 50 Legends and 35 Youngens have been carefully selected by the Moonlight Ball Planning Team as a celebration of the 50 years since originally opening and 35 years since reopening. Sabir bin Nabeeh Nu’Man (son of Jeanette Nu’Man and the late Nabeeh (Zakiyyah) Nu’Man) recently defended his thesis for a Master’s Degree in Islamic Architecture and Islamic Art History from the Qatar Foundation in Doha, Qatar. His thesis was accepted without corrections or edits. He is the first student to complete the program. Sabir was one of 15 students accepted from countries all over the world into the program with full scholarships in 2011, the only American and the only African American. He holds a Master’s Degree in Architecture and Building Design (2006) from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and is currently employed by the Ministry of Public Works in Doha as a Staff Architect responsible for oversight of publicly funded building projects. Sabir has been invited to pursue a doctorate in Islamic Architecture at Qatar University and offered a full scholarship. He will be the first student at the University to pursue such a degree.! !
