Pulse variety guide 2015 I N 2014, Pulse Breeding Australia and the National Mungbean Improvement Program released five new pulse crop varieties for the 2015 season – three lentils, one faba bean and one mungbean. The new lentil varieties are adapted to the existing lentil growing areas of southern and Western Australia, offer improved yield and disease resistance and target three different lentil market segments. The new faba bean variety will set a new benchmark for yield in the production areas in southern Australia with increased resistance to ascochyta blight. The new mungbean variety replaces Celera and Green Diamond, reinstating grower and market demand for small seeded Australian mungbean. Pulse Australia national development manager, Gordon Cumming, believes the Australian pulse industry is very fortunate to have two dedicated plant breeding programs – Pulse Breeding Australia for the winter pulses and the National Mungbean Improvement Program (NMIP). “These two plant breeding programs have provided the pulse industry with some outstanding varieties that have underpinned the increased grower confidence in pulses and gained a high level of market acceptance of Australian pulses,” he said. Launched in 2007, Pulse Breeding Australia (PBA) aims to deliver pulse cultivars with: OO Regional adaptation; OO High yield; OO Superior resistance to diseases (eg. ascochyta and bacterial blight, botrytis grey mould, anthracnose and chocolate spot); OO Outstanding quality parameters for mainstream and specialpurpose end-users; and, OO Improved abiotic stress tolerance (eg. to herbicide, boron and salt). “Each variety has its own ‘Variety management package’, or VMP, that outlines the specific benefits and limitations of the variety,” said Gordon. “Changing to a new variety is an important decision and the new variety available may not suit a particular locality or soil type. The VMP will help growers make informed decisions and also highlight any specific agronomic requirements for growing the new variety.” PBA Samira PBA Samira is the new benchmark southern faba bean variety. It is the highest yielding faba bean available for the southern region with wide adaptation and is very responsive to high PBA Samira faba bean. yielding situations. The disease management package includes excellent ascochyta blight resistance (including to the new strain recently identified in the mid-north of South Australia) and improved chocolate spot and rust resistance compared to Fiesta VF and Farah. PBA Samira plants are vigorous, with good stem strength. The medium sized seed, similar to Fiesta VF and Farah, is suited to the Middle East markets. An End Point Royalty (EPR) of $3.85 per tonne (GST inclusive) Three years faster release time Together with its commercial partners, PBA has streamlined variety release to make new varieties available to Australian growers up to three years faster than traditional variety release methods. Since its inception in 2003 the National Mungbean Improvement Program (NMIP) has improved yield and reliability for the industry, with the release of Crystal and Satin II in 2008, followed by Jade-Au in 2013, taking grower and industry confidence to a new high. Gordon said the area planted to mungbean following these releases has grown from 35,000 to 66,000 hectares and an average production of 60,000 tonnes. “The expansion of the industry will continue as new varieties with improved yield stability and disease resistance come to market,” he said. Along with new varieties comes new or adapted agronomic practice and feedback to the breeders about the performance of the varieties under various growing conditions. The Pulse Australia industry development managers in each region are heavily involved with assisting growers with the information needed to make the most of the new varieties, accessing specialist researchers to assist with specific problems as they arise and contributing to the planning process behind the development of new varieties with specific traits of value to the industry. Pulse Australia publishes variety management packages (VMP) for each new variety, providing specific agronomic and marketing information to assist with variety selection and crop management. March–April 2015 Australian Grain — 45 applies, which includes breeder royalties, upon delivery of this variety. Seed is available from the commercial partner, Seednet. PBA Samira PBA Greenfield PBA Giant PBA Jumbo 2 PBA Greenfield PBA Greenfield is a high yielding, disease resistant mediumsized green lentil. It is a broadly adapted variety, well suited to medium rainfall lentil growing regions of southern and Western Australia. This variety offers a 10 per cent long-term average yield advantage over Nugget and Boomer, making it the highest yielding green lentil variety in Australia. PBA Greenfield offers moderate resistance to ascochyta blight and botrytis grey mould with improved tolerance to soil salinity, similar to PBA Flash and PBA Bolt. Small broadleaf weed seeds are readily removed from the harvested PBA Greenfield sample. This medium-sized green lentil is suited to the human food market as an emerging market class At Dinner Plain the pace is easy going... Segregated on-farm storage is likely to be required. PBA Greenfield will be open marketed with an(EP) of $5.50 per tonne (incl. GST), applied upon delivery. Seed is commercialised through PBSeeds and available now. PBA Giant PBA Giant is a high yielding large green lentil that is broadly adapted, but best suited to medium rainfall lentil growing regions in southern and Western Australia. It is the largest seed size Australian green PBA Giant lentil. lentil variety (average diameter of 5.8 mm) offering improved yield over Boomer in Victoria (5–10 per cent on average) and similar yield in South Australia. With good early vigour, similar to PBA Ace and Boomer and improved shattering resistance compared to Boomer, PBA Giant is moderately resistant to ascochyta blight and has improved tolerance to soil boron, similar to PBA Jumbo, PBA Flash and PBA Bolt. Small broadleaf weed seeds are readily removed from the harvested sample. PBA Giant is suited to the human food market, with excellent prospects in the domestic market to replace imported product, and for export. Segregated on-farm storage is likely to be required. PBA Giant will be open marketed with an EPR of $5.50 per tonne (incl. GST), applied upon delivery. Seed is commercialised through PBSeeds and available now. PBA Jumbo 2 PBA Jumbo 2 is a high yielding disease resistant large red lentil released as a direct replacement for PBA Jumbo and Aldinga (average yield 9–13 per cent higher than PBA Jumbo) in all PBA Jumbo 2 lentil. areas. It is a mid-maturing, broadly adapted variety that has increased resistance to ascochyta blight and botrytis grey mould. March–April 2015 Suitable for early sowing to maximise yield, PBA Jumbo 2 has improved early vigour and improved lodging resistance over PBA Jumbo and Aldinga. Its tolerance to soil boron is similar to PBA Jumbo, PBA Flash and PBA Bolt. It has a seed size similar to PBA Jumbo and Aldinga and is well suited to the removal of small broadleaf weed seeds from the harvested sample. Suits the human food market (consumed whole or split) for large-sized red lentil, fitting export markets that have traditionally bought the PBA Jumbo and Aldinga varieties. Segregated storage is required. PBA Jumbo 2 will be open marketed with an EPR of $5.50 per tonne (incl. GST), applied upon delivery. Seed is commercialised through PBSeeds and available now. Celera II-AU achieves yields similar to Green Diamond in disease-free situations. It outperforms all current varieties under high halo blight disease pressure and offers improved tan spot resistance and similar powdery mildew resistance compared to Green Diamond. It is earlier flowering and maturity than large green mungbean varieties. Celera II-AU is protected under Plant Breeder’s Rights (PBR) legislation. A Seed Royalty, which includes breeder royalties, applies at the point of sale. Seed is available from your local Australian Mungbean Association (AMA) member or seed re-seller. Celera II-AU Celera II-AU is a small-seeded shiny mungbean released as a replacement for Green Diamond. The market for smallseeded, shiny green mungbean is limited so it is best to consult with your marketer before PBA Celera II-AU mungbean. planting. A niche market exists in some European and Asian countries with some splitters and millers preferring the small green mungbean type. It is a broadly adapted variety suited to the existing smallseeded production areas of northern NSW and southern Queensland. It is suitable for both spring and summer planting.
