Easy Mortarless Brick Patio Installation Step 1 - Base Preparation Measure and stake your desired project perimeter. Tie the string-line at the level that you want your finished project height. Remove any loose dirt or sod to at least a minimum of 5” below your finish grade. This allows room for your brick pavers, and for the compacted base. The more time and effort you put into your base preparation the better your brick patio project will look. Use 3/4” crushed gravel for the base filling material. Compact using a flat plate compactor available from most rental yards or a hand tamper. Spread your crushed rock in 2” layers. Spray with water and use compactor until well compacted. H.C. Muddox or Interstate® Clay Brick 1” Layer Concrete Sand 2” Layer Crushed Gravel Step 2 - Bedding Sand and Edging Install your plastic, metal or brick edging. Accurately following your string lines, secure your edge restraint. Use concrete sand and spread evenly to a 1” depth. Rest the pipe on the gravel base and space 2-1/2 feet apart. Spread concrete sand to the top of the pipe. Using a 2 x 4, screed the sand level to the top of the pipes. Remove the pipe and fill in the voids with loose sand. Do not walk on or compact the sand. Step 3 - Laying The Brick Using one of the brick patterns shown, begin laying the brick. Install one row and use a string line to help keep the pattern straight. Some bricks may require cutting to form a particular line or edge. Cut the brick with a chisel, brick splitter or masonry saw (always remember to wear your safety glasses and mask when cutting the brick). Step 4 - Final Details Sweep off any loose debris or sand that may be on top of brick pavers. Using your flat plate compactor or hand tamper and start compacting your brick pavers working from the outside toward the center. This will level out any high brick pavers making your surface level. Spread concrete sand over the brick. Sweep loose sand over the finished surface. Fill all joints and recompact. This will compact the sand firmly into the joints. H.C. Amount of Gravel For 2" of gravel you will need to calculate the volume. Length x Width x Height = Volume Example: For a 10' X 10' patio with 2" (.167 foot) of gravel, you will need (10 X 10 X .167)= 16.7 cubic feet or 0.65 cubic yards. Amount of Sand Once you have the amount of gravel needed, calculate the amount of sand. You will need 1" of sand above the gravel base. You must allow for sand to filter into the gravel base and space between bricks. Example: For a 10' X 10' patio, Use half the volume of gravel. 16.7 cubic feet ÷ 2 = 8.35 cubic feet or 0.32 cubic yards. Patterns Amount of Bricks A standard brick paver measures 4" X 8". To cover 100 square feet you will need about 450 brick pavers (4.5 bricks per square foot). 4.5 bricks per square foot. Herringbone-90 Degree Running Bond Basket Weave Stacked Example: For a 10' X 10' patio, the patio is 100 sq. feet. 4.5 brick x 100 square feet = 450 brick pavers.
