Getting Started
Here are a few simple guidelines to get you started so all your
weekend projects will fit together.
Sketch the boundaries of your yard
• Mark major features (house, trees, driveway, etc.)
• Note placement of windows and doors.
• Note where people walk
Determine placement
•
•
•
•
•
•
Draw view lines on your plan from windows and doors. Beauty elements like patios, walkways, benches, go along or around these lines so you can see them. Utility elements like grills, trash cans, etc. go outside the view lines.
Add interest and depth with different levels using steps or retaining walls.
Highlight entry and exit points with plantings or special paving.
Grills require 3 feet clearance on either side of the grill
Pathways need to be at least 3 feet wide
Patios with tables should follow the following guidelines:
Required Space
4’
5’
Round
10’ x 10’
12’ x 12’
Rectangular
9’ x 10’
9’ x 12’
Other Tips
• Slope away from the house. Slope patios to
make sure water runs away from the house.
As a rule, drop 1/4˝ for every foot.
Don’t be afraid to think big, but if you make a plan for the whole landscape, break it
into manageable projects you can tackle one at a time.

Shovel
To begin with, mark out the area to be excavated with stakes and string. You can indicate various key points
on the ground with an aerosol marker. Extend the surface line by 6 inches (150 mm)
on all sides. The curbs will be laid in the excess area.
Determine the level of your patio. You must provide a drainage slope away from the house of ¼ inch (6.5 mm)
per foot. If your project measures 10 feet (3 m), you will have a slope of 2 ½ inches (63.5 mm).
Rake
Polymeric

Dig a minimum of 12 inches (300 mm) deep.

Check along several points that the foundation is at the same depth.Cover the bottom and sides of the
excavated area with a geotextile membrane. The geotextile will prevent the foundation from mixing into the
natural soil. It will also provide greater stability.
Stakes
Foundation
Spread 10 inches (254 mm) of 0-¾ (0-20 mm) crushed stone. Level it with a rake. To facilitate compaction,
you can hose down the surface. Use the mechanical tamper or vibrating plate to compact the entire surface.
Overlap the strokes of the tamper.
To check that the foundation depth is uniform, use the stakes and attach a string. Stretch the string tight
and, maintaining the drainage slope, check along several points to make sure that the entire foundation is at
the same depth.

Spread the stone dust between the pipes. Level it with a rake first and then with the aid of a straight board.
Move the pipes and repeat the operation until the entire surface is done. Do not walk on the stone bedding.
Gaps are created when you move the pipes. These will be filled in a later stage during the installation of
pavers and slabs.

Installation
Pull a string to align the modules in the first row. Place the first slabs or pavers on the bedding. Continue
work by walking on the modules. Never walk on the bedding. Walk on the slabs or pavers and fill in the gaps
left by the pipes.
Check the alignment of pavers or slabs after 5 rows and adjust them as needed with a screwdriver. If you
need to cut pavers or slabs, use a concrete saw from a rental centre. This will give you a straight cut. We
strongly recommend that you wear safety glasses when cutting pavers or slabs. When cutting, keep a
distance from the pavers or slabs already installed because dust and dirt will irreversibly stain the modules
already in place.
For pavers only: you can use a cold chisel and a small sledgehammer. Draw a line on the paver. Strike along
the line. Finish the cut by striking firmly on the visible face of the paver.

Installing the curbs: If you install concrete curbs, you must install them directly on the same bedding as
your slabs and pavers. If you are installing plastic paving edges, you must install them directly on the same
bedding as pavers or slabs. Insert nails every 8 inches.
Finishing
For slabs: When you have completed laying the slabs, spread polymeric sand and sweep it in all directions to
fill in the joints. You should never use the vibrating plate on the slabs.

For pavers: Spread sand and stabilize the pavers with a vibrating plate. This will set the pavers into their
bedding and level the surface.
Sweep away any excess sand. To easily remove surface sand from pavers and slabs, use a leaf blower.
Before watering, make sure that no sand remains on the surface. Gently spray a fine mist of water for 10-15
seconds on a portion of the paving surface. Wait 3-4 minutes. Spray again until no more water soaks into the
paver joint. Stop after two repetitions. We strongly suggest that you read the complete procedures described
on the polymeric sand bags.

Walls Installation guide
Excavation
To begin, mark out the area to be excavated with stakes and string. You can indicate various key points on the ground with
an aerosol marker. Determine the level of your wall from the lowest point. Dig a trench at least 12 inches (300 mm) deep
by 24 inches (600 mm) wide.
To check that the depth of the trench is uniform, use the stakes and attach a string in a level manner. Stretch the string
tight and with a line level, check along several points to make sure that the whole trench is at the same depth.
Foundation
Fill the trench with 10 inches (254 mm) of 0-¾ crushed stone (20-0 mm). Level it with a rake. To facilitate compaction,
you can hose down the surface. Use the mechanical tamper to compact the entire surface. Overlap the strokes of
the tamper.
To check that the foundation is uniform, attach a string in a level manner. Stretch the string tight and, with a line level,
check along several points to make sure that the whole foundation is at the same depth.
Installation
Spread ½ inch (12.7 mm) of stone dust on top of the compacted foundation. Check the final level with a spirit level.
For the first row only, if necessary, remove the lip on the rear of the block with a small sledgehammer. (Type of blocks that
you must remove the lip on the rear: Chiseled wall, Border wall).
This step will assist in leveling the blocks. Prepare a number of blocks in advance.
We strongly recommend that you wear safety glasses for this step.
Pull a string to align the blocks in the first row. Install the first row of blocks, starting with a corner. Check levels in both
directions, from front to rear and left to right. Remove or add stone dust to adjust the level. You can also adjust the level
by lightly tapping the surface of the block with a small sledgehammer. Check the level from block to block.

Installation (CONTINUED) Shovel
To start the second row, cut a block in half to make a half block. Draw a line around
the block. Strike that line. Finish the cut by striking firmly on the visible face of the
block. You can also make the cut with a concrete saw.
Rake
Stone
dust
We strongly recommend that you wear safety glasses for this step.
Next, install a second and third row of blocks, making sure that the rear lip, if there
is one, rests firmly on the block on the row underneath. If the block has no rear lip,
you should position the block by aligning the front faces. Alternate the position of
the blocks to off-set the joints. Check that the blocks are level.
Gloves
Safety glasses
Stakes
Never install blocks in a column. You must always overlap the joints. To ensure that
the wall is solid, you can glue each block with concrete adhesive.
String
When the wall is completed, install a perforated drainage pipe behind the wall and
connect it to the existing drainage system. Fill the space behind the wall with ¾
inch (20 mm) clean stone.

Calculate Your Project
Calculating Walls
1. Estimate the number of courses of block in your finished wall. For walls under 24 in.
high, bury half of the first course. For walls over 24 in. high, bury the first full course.
Number of layers of block = desired wall height ÷ block height
2. Determine number of blocks needed by multiplying the total number of blocks per
course times the number of courses.
Length of wall in Inches ____ x height of wall in inches ____ = total sq. inches
Total sq. inches divided by 144 = ____ sq. feet of wall
3. Determine the total cubic feet of paver base needed by multiplying the number of
linear feet of wall times .2 cubic foot. This will give you a 2 in. deep base, 16 in. wide.
Please refer to specific product information for recommended base depth.
Total linear feet of wall ____ x .2 cubic feet = ____ total cubic feet of paver
base needed (1 cubic foot = 120 lbs)
Example: 10 linear feet of wall x .2 cubic foot = 2 cubic feet of paver base needed
4. Calculate the amount of drainage aggregate that you'll need behind the wall.
Total number of blocks ____ x .2 cubic foot = ____total cubic feet of drainage
aggregate needed. This will give you 6 in. of drainage behind the wall.
Example: 35 total blocks x .2 cubic foot = 7 cubic feet of drainage needed behind the wall.
(1 cubic foot = 120 lbs)
Patios & Walkways
1. Select a shape for your paving stone project.
2. Plan the dimensions of your finished project, accurate to one inch.
3. Calculate the area (total square feet) of your project. This will determine the total
amount of paving stones, base material and paver sand that you will need.
Rectangular: ____ L x ____ W = Square feet Example: 12' x 8' = 96 square feet
4. Compute the perimeter. You'll need this so you know how much edging you'll need
and also for your border calculation.
Rectangular: ____ + ____ + ____+ ____ = linear feet
Example: 12' + 8' + 12' + 8' = 40 linear feet
5. Select your paving stone or patio stone product and pattern, then calculate the
number of pavers needed using the dimensions provided.
6. Determine the amount of paver base material necessary (min. 4 in. diameter for paths
and patios, min. 8 in. diameter for driveways).
7. Calculate the amount of paver sand needed to cover the base and between the joints.
Square feet of project x .083 = cubic feet of sand (add approx. 1/2 cu. ft. per
100 sq. ft. of paving stones for joints).
8. Compute the required quantity of edge restraint and edges.

Frequently asked questions
Is the base really that important?
Yes! Just as you wouldn't build a house without a foundation or leveling pad, the base
and the buried portion of the blocks is crucial to the integrity of your retaining wall. The
base provides a level of support for your wall and the buried portion of the base course
prevents the wall from moving, all of which are crucial to the longevity of your wall.
What about levelling? If it's a little 'off' nobody is really going to
notice, are they?
One of the key factors to building a long-lasting retaining wall is leveling. More than just
making your wall appealing to the eye, levelling maintains the batter (angle of the wall)
which provides strength and prevents that wall from tipping forward. Levelling is not
as difficult as you may think. If you start with a level base and continue levelling each
course as it is installed, building your retaining wall will be much easier. If the wall is
left uneven at the base, the error will grow dramatically with each course that is added.
It is much easier to make the correction early on, than to try and correct it later.
Okay, so I'll level it. How do I do it right?
To properly level your wall you will need a carpenter's level. Lay the level across your
base and check for level both front and back (to keep your retaining wall from tipping
backward or forward) and side to side (to make sure your wall is not going uphill or
downhill). Start by levelling your base and continue levelling as you lay each course of
block. If you find an area that is not level, be sure to correct it before adding additional
courses.
What is so important about the drainage aggregate? What is it for?
Water is one of the greatest forces your retaining wall will face. Protect yourself from
future disappointments of wall failure by installing your wall properly the first time,
which means including the drainage aggregate behind your wall. All retaining walls
will encounter the force of water at some point, whether it is from heavy rains or some
other unforeseen event. Adding proper drainage will prevent water pressure from
building up behind the wall and forcing it to collapse. In addition to building your own
wall properly, remember to keep gutter downspouts pointed away from your retaining
walls. Retaining walls and water pressure don't mix.
By following these key steps, you can build a retaining wall with confidence.
Once it's built, you'll enjoy your new landscape for many years.
