AVA Gallery and Art Center, located at 11 Bank Street in Lebanon, NH, is
pleased to present the exhibition Happy Medium by Helen Shulman, on display from
April 17 through May 20, 2015 in the Clifford B. West Gallery. A reception, free and
open to the public, will take place on Friday, April 17, from 5 to 7pm.
Helen Shulman, of Quechee, VT received her art training at several programs
including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA; the Art Institute of Boston; and
Massachusetts College of Art. Her initial careers were in teaching and psychotherapy
and the latter greatly influenced her artistic career.
Shulman’s works are in several collections including Dartmouth Hitchcock
Medical Center in Lebanon and Manchester, NH; Fletcher Allen Medical Center in
Burlington, MA; and AdventEdge Business Center in Washington, DC. She is
represented by West Branch Gallery in Stowe VT; Edgewater Gallery in Middlebury
VT; Kobalt Gallery in Provincetown, MA; Pryor Fine Arts in Atlanta, GA and Allyn
Gallup Contemporary in Sarasota, FL. Shulman exhibits extensively throughout the US
as well as in online exhibitions. Awards and honors include a Residency at the
Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT; selection for Studio Visit Magazine by juror Carl
Belz of the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University in Boston, MA; and a 2014 special
recognition award at Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery.
For her exhibition at AVA, Shulman will be showing oil and cold wax paintings.
Shulman is known for employing warm earth tones to create abstractions with
landscape associations. Her ability to capture light often gives a sense of recognition “as
if images that emerged from her imagination exist somewhere in the physical world.”
Helen Shulman will give a gallery talk on Wednesday, May 6 at 5:30pm.
The talk is free and open to the public.
