April 3, 2015 Contact: Margaret Jacobs, 603-448-3117 AVA Gallery and Art Center Helen Shulman Happy Medium April 17 – May 20, 2015 Opening Reception: Friday, April 17, 5-7pm AVA Gallery and Art Center, located at 11 Bank Street in Lebanon, NH, is pleased to present the exhibition Happy Medium by Helen Shulman, on display from April 17 through May 20, 2015 in the Clifford B. West Gallery. A reception, free and open to the public, will take place on Friday, April 17, from 5 to 7pm. Helen Shulman, of Quechee, VT received her art training at several programs including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA; the Art Institute of Boston; and Massachusetts College of Art. Her initial careers were in teaching and psychotherapy and the latter greatly influenced her artistic career. Shulman’s works are in several collections including Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon and Manchester, NH; Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, MA; and AdventEdge Business Center in Washington, DC. She is represented by West Branch Gallery in Stowe VT; Edgewater Gallery in Middlebury VT; Kobalt Gallery in Provincetown, MA; Pryor Fine Arts in Atlanta, GA and Allyn Gallup Contemporary in Sarasota, FL. Shulman exhibits extensively throughout the US as well as in online exhibitions. Awards and honors include a Residency at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT; selection for Studio Visit Magazine by juror Carl Belz of the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University in Boston, MA; and a 2014 special recognition award at Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery. For her exhibition at AVA, Shulman will be showing oil and cold wax paintings. Shulman is known for employing warm earth tones to create abstractions with landscape associations. Her ability to capture light often gives a sense of recognition “as if images that emerged from her imagination exist somewhere in the physical world.” Helen Shulman will give a gallery talk on Wednesday, May 6 at 5:30pm. The talk is free and open to the public. AVA Gallery and Art Center/Alliance for the Visual Arts is a non-profit organization representing Vermont and New Hampshire artists. Located at 11 Bank Street right off Colburn Park in Lebanon, NH, the gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11AM to 5PM (7pm on Thursdays) and by appointment; closed on Sundays and Mondays. Admission is free, and the gallery is accessible to the handicapped.
