Happy New Year everyone!
I hope you all have a good Christmas and
New Year and that you get all your projects
completed in time for the gift giving. We had
some nice ideas for Christmas gifts and quilts
in the shop.
The snow was late arriving this year, but
as I write this we now have a white world.
How wonderful!...as long as we forget about
the shovelling. We are halfway through our
year and I hope you like the quilts we have
chosen as much as you liked the first lot in
September.
~Ruth and the staff of BPQ
So what is new? Well BPQ has moved up
a notch and now owns an iPad mini, how
is that for moving forward! For some years
I have wanted to be able to show the quilts
that are made in class and none of the ideas
I had were practical and then the iPad came
into my life. We now have opened up a
Bear’s Paw Quilts Facebook Page and I
can photo the completed quilts and projects
and post them for you to see. I can remind
you of the events, planned or spontaneous,
and generally keep you up to date about the
happenings in the shop.
Soon we will be able to access the Facebook
page from the website. Oh all this technology
almost blows my mind, but I am getting
better. I have to say after a rocky start I am
really beginning to enjoy the iPad mini. So
please find us on Facebook and “like” us so
that we can begin to share all the fabulous
things that happen at BPQ.

January 2014
By now everyone must know that Bernice
suffered a brain aneurism in early September.
We were all shocked but as she was so fit
and had such a healthy lifestyle, she fought
back successfully. She was home within the
month and on the mend – she even attended
Labyrinth Walk in early November. We are so
glad that she is better and we continue to pray
for her wellbeing.
What’s new at BPQ?
So, to next year’s teaching schedule. The usual
crew are holding classes – Terry, Joanne,
Bernice, Karen, Linnea, Geana, Dahn and
Ruth. New to the team this time are Laurie
Jacobsen, who you see in the shop most
Mondays, and Pauline Chalifour, who also
works in the shop on a weekly basis. Both
are long time Yukoners and are well known
quilters. Also, I have recruited a new resident to
Whitehorse, Diane Hart and we welcome all
three to the teaching team.
New Term Sale ~ So you have signed up
for a few classes and now you need the fabric.
Dig into your stash first and then fill in the gaps
at our twice yearly big pre-class sale. We will
start on Thursday, January 9th at 10:00am
until 6:00pm The sale will continue on Friday,
January 10th opening early at 9:00am and
stay open until 7:00pm.There will be large
amounts of fabric at 30% and 50% off and the
rest of the fabric will be reduced by 15%. We
usually have a table of 70% off fabric as well
just to clear it out ready for more to arrive.
Get yourself organized and be there.
Class Level Guide
In an attempt to guide you to the degree of
difficulty in each class we have designated the
following words:
beginner
Those straight from QuiltStart would manage these
classes and every other level are welcome, of course.
confident
If you were an experienced sewer before
QuiltStart this would be do-able, or if you have
made a few quilts and you feel confident.
challenging
These require considerable experience in quilting,
and will take time and patience. But you have to
sew your first challenging quilt sometime.
This is only a guide to let you know what to
expect from a class.
January
1. QuiltStart
with Ruth Headley
This class is designed for those who have no experience
in quilting, or for those who want to get back to basic skills. The class
has two components: Introduction to Quilting where you learn about
the basic equipment and materials needed as well as learning about
your machine, and QuiltStart is where you will make a table runner in
the Rail Fence design. This class provides the rudiments of quilting and
prepares you to work on any number of projects afterward. This class
is comprised of 12 hours of class time and probably 10 hours of extra
sewing to complete the project.

11. Yellow Brick Road
14. Town Square
with Ruth Headley
with Geana Hadley
This is a well-used
pattern and one most experienced
quilters will have made many times.
I never have, so when the pattern
was reprinted I decided to
reintroduce it to the newer quilters.
It is a fat quarter quilt and lately we
have been having so many lovely
lines of fabric that deserve to be
made into quilts. Choose the size
from baby to king and pick those fat
quarters. Perfect for beginners.
Go neutral or go bright
to create this great little number.
Interlocking squares make this quilt
look like more work than it really is.

15. One Block Wonder
with Ruth Headley
This really is the last time, I may be one block
wondered out.
But I do love the technique and the results are so fabulous, I have managed
to sell several of my finished ones. This quilt is made with only one fabric,
multi coloured, multi imaged and then we go from there. The cutting is easy
but the stitching needs to be exact and there is lots of stitching. I include a
session at the end to finally put all the parts together. It is without a doubt a
fun quilt to make.

I wanted to share with a whole new group.
Suitable for confident beginners, this quilt
allows you to use up some of those fat quarters
you’ve been collecting.

17. Reflected
with Ruth Headley
I found a book with very “teachable” table
runners, and so I am using it for a few classes. A different,
known quilt designer created each so there are a good
variety of techniques. This one is a “modern” design by
Angela Walters and includes some simple paper piecing,
and some bias stitching so it is a simple but learning class.
The result is a very stunning table runner.

with Pauline Chalifour
A favorite of mine! I first
made it with muslin and 30’s fabric, but
this time I’ve made a more modern
version. Taking a traditional block and
placing it on point gives this quilt interest. I have added a pieced border to
carry on the scrappy look and to show how it can enhance a quilt. Who knows?
After this, you may find yourself always adding some piecing to your borders.

with Linnea Castagner
with Ruth Headley
We are again using a Kim Schaefer pattern from a book
we have used before. She really inspires us and it is full of other usable
patterns. This quilt is dependent on accurate quarter inch seams, simple
cutting, simple piecing and spectacular results. Confident beginner.
Well what ever
does that mean? Well a ziggurat
is an ancient stepped building a
bit like a pyramid. When you see
the quilt you will see exactly why
she called it that. Choosing the
colours for this will be fun, lots
of variety needed, I bet this one
can be made out of your stash. It
is a fairly easy quilt, two triangle
squares and some bias stitching, it went together quickly. Good for a
confident beginner.

I decided early on this

manner, but I liked it. What can I say
- another lovely quilt. The book that it
comes out of has already provided me
with another good pattern that is now
a quilt. I think this will be fun for you
to make and faster and more accurate
than the usual way. Good for beginners too.

The minute I saw this book I knew I
would make many of the quilts within! “Scrap Quilts Fit For
a Queen or a King, Twin or Lap” is an awesome book
that gives you so many options for different sized
quilts. Farmer’s Daughter incorporates three
different blocks to make a very interesting
pattern. I started with a Jellyroll to give
a very scrappy look. There is some paper
piecing as well as two other pieced blocks.
Accuracy is key in this quilt which makes it a
challenging quilt.

with Ruth Headley
I made a baby quilt, you could turn it into a wall hanging
or a child’s quilt. It is made using pre-printed petal shaped fusible
interfacing. It is fun and easy, the appliquéed pieces have no raw edges.
Good for a beginner, but the top stitching of the applique pieces need
some care; this is a good learning quilt.

32. Spin Wheel
with Dianne Hart
with Karen Mills
If you are a thrifty
quilter who likes to keep wastage
to a minimum, then this class is for
you. This pattern is much easier than
it looks. The stars magically come
together using strip piecing and a
template that is included with the
pattern. The additional pieces are used
to make smaller quilts or table runners. Choose from a 3 or 4 strip pattern
using 2 or 3 colours. Instructions for a variety of sizes are included.
These spinning
wheels are easy to piece and
addictive. Strip piecing and
partial seams simplify this quilt’s
assembly – no set in seams!

31. A Modern Quilt & Modern Quilting
with Joanne Love
Looking for
something different and want to start playing
outside the box? Well, Modern Quilts might
be just what you are looking for. These quilts
go together quickly and have a clean, fresh
look, making them a perfect alternative to
the traditional baby quilt. It also provides the
perfect quilt top with lots of empty space to
experiment and practice free motion quilting.
This class will be taught in 2 parts. In the first class you will construct a
Modern Quilt from a simple pieced pattern. The 2nd class will focus on
all aspects of the quilting process: from what batting to use; your thread
choices and how it will have an effect on the outcome of your quilt; as well
as a new way to approach quilting patterns as outlined in a book by Angela
Walters. Here is your chance to have some fun learning new free motion
quilting patterns and perhaps trying a new color palette.

Another runner from the “Set the Table” book and it is

easily into a baby quilt, if you prefer. It uses fat 1/8th and I had left
overs so was tempted to make it larger to use up all the bits. We will
sort that out later. It is basically two triangle squares and four patches,
so it is ideal for the beginner.

enlarge it. Great for a beginner, there is
nothing complicated about this project. If
you have done any of my other table runners you already have the “Set
the Table” book.

43. Heavy Metal
with Dahn Casselman
We are going 3D, man. Using wire form ‘mesh’ that can be
easily sewn into, we will be bending, folding and stitching a beautiful but
simple piece. Using your own special fabrics, you will create 3D effects
with either project—the bug or the flower piece. Learn how versatile
this product is and see how this can elevate your wallhangings into ‘art’
pieces. I tell ya, this stuff is fun!

Sign-up begins
Retreat Date
It has evolved over the years that we do early sign-up for our
Quilt Retreats. Rather than waiting for class sign-up days
in January and September, we begin the sign-up for these
coveted getaways earlier. Don’t despair, we have a board up
in the shop to let you know when sign-up will begin.
Keep your eyes open for registration.

46. Celtic Knots
with Judy Regan
Such a dramatic quilt,
in this class you can choose any
of her patterns as she teaches
a technique rather than
the actual pattern.
Judy from Juneau has
joined us before to teach
this technique and we all just
loved her. If you are good at the
quarter inch seam you will be fine with
this class.
Confident beginner.

Bear’s Paw Quilts - Workshop Policies
Classes are open on a first come basis. When a class
fills up quickly, we often put people on a wait list and
schedule another class.
We request that you leave babies and children at
home when you come to a class. Teens are welcome
in all our classes.
You are not officially registered until you have paid.
GST will be added to class cost. You may pay for
a class with Visa, MC, debit card, cash or use your
class points.
Cancellation: In the event you cannot attend a
class that you have paid for, we will issue credit or
transfer you to another class if we receive 7 days
notice. If we receive less than 7 days notice, we will
give you class handouts, but no refund can be given.
Class Minimum: Normally a class must have 3 students.
Sewing Machines: Please bring your own machine
in good working order. An instruction manual for
the machine is essential. Don’t forget to bring extra
machine needles. BPQ does have one Bernina
sewing machine for rent - see our Sewing Machine
Rental Policy.
Supply Lists: are available for each class at the
time of registration. Read it carefully and bring
everything on the list.
Place: All classes are in the BPQ classroom. Ironing
boards and irons are provided. 2 large cutting mats
are provided. Please bring anything else you may
need, and label all your personal equipment.
Bear’s Paw Quilts - Sewing Machine Rental Policy
♦ In the interest of encouraging beginners to quilt, Bear’s Paw Quilts has purchased one new Bernina
Activa 230 that will be available for rent.
♦ Cost of machine rental is $30 per day or $15 for half a day or less.
♦ The rental machine must be booked and paid for at the time of class registration. In the event you
wish to cancel either the machine rental or the class, you will recover full credit for your payment
only if we receive the cancellation 7 days before the class date.
♦ At the time you book the sewing machine, you must make an appointment for a brief instruction on
the use of the machine.
♦ The machine is kept on the shop premises at all times. You may not take it home.
♦ You must provide your own thread, machine needles, personal sewing equipment and supplies.
Any bobbins that you use must be left with the machine at the end of the rental period.
Note: Demonstration machines are not available for use during class or at any other time. They are for
demonstrating features to persons who are interested in buying a Bernina.
