He received his Doctor of Education Degree from the University of North Dakota. For many years, he was the director of the Child Development Training Program. He is currently a professor emeritus of Early Childhood and Foundations Education at Bemidji State University. Dr. Gartrell has authored numerous textbooks on early childhood education.
