students in Mme Emond’s French classes
will be participating in this event. All 25
pairs will have to defeat physical and
mental challenges in French as they solve
problems, run obstacles races, recreate art
and so much more! Thanks to the Grade
11 FI class for organizing this event.

to Know I Learn From Being In

Catholic Schools at a province
wide mass that will be
celebrated at St. Benedict
School on May 7th.
Some students will be helping
our neighbours and helping
keep our community clean by
picking up garbage in the
subdivisions around our school.
CELEBRATE CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK
Exploring Paths of Joy
Catholic schools are Catholic communities. Catholic schools are faith communities. We
walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. As Catholics we are
expected to grow in faith. What exactly that means will differ from person to person and
ultimately, growth in faith is a personal matter between us and God. We can nurture our faith
through prayer and knowledge and our living in a vibrant Catholic community. That is how we
grow together. Community is part of who we are as Catholics.
Catholic Education Week is marked by special activities including prayer celebrations.
Various events will be going on throughout the week, all around the theme “Exploring Paths of
Joy”.
We truly have a lot to celebrate at Bishop. From our award winning students in both
academics and athletics, to students who take part in social justice issues and stand up for what is
right, they all represent the qualities and characteristics we nurture in our Catholic schools. The
results of the Fraser Institute are out. Bishop ranks in the top 6 in Sudbury out of all high
schools (French and English).
Lights, camera, action! Representatives from EQAO will be at Bishop
Carter to speak to staff and students about the great things we do to help
students achieve excellence in Grade 9 EQAO math. Bishop Carter has
been recognized province wide by EQAO for our work in grade 9
Mathematics. EQAO has bestowed this honour upon BAC because we
have one of the highest rates across the province in terms of helping
Applied stream students achieve the provincial standard (level 3 or 4) in
the grade 9 EQAO exam, when they did not achieve it in the grade 6 EQAO exam. In fact,
31% of our Applied stream students who did not meet the provincial standard in grade 6, now
achieved the standard in grade 9, while 18% of our Academic stream students improved to
reach the provincial standard from grade 6 to grade 9. Congratulations to our students for
achieving the provincial standard, as well as to their teachers Mr. Boucher, Mrs. Pardoe and
Mrs. Denomme for their dedication in helping their students improve and meet their individual
potential.
Skills Competition
Congratulations to Christine H and
Autumn M, grade 12 students in
Bishop Carter's Specialist High
Skills Major program in
Information and Communications
Technology. They participated in
the Ontario Technological Skills
Competition (OTSC) Qualifying
Round for TV/Video Production at
Canadore College and took first
place. Their task was to produce
a 30 second public service
announcement video on the
theme of cyberbullying. Aside
from video production, Autumn
and Christine demonstrate
excellence in 2D graphic design,
3D modeling, web development,
game programming and various
other media production skills.

Student Council News!!!!
Members who have shown an
interest in becoming a part of
next year's student council will
have to get creative and think
of a way to excite the school in
a showdown. Students will then
vote on who will get to be on
next year's student council.
Our last dance of the school
year will take place on May 8.
The theme is graffitti and
students are encouraged to
wear a white t-shirt that can be
written on. These can be
purchased at the dollar store.
The cost of the dance is $10
which is nonrefundable. If
parents could please pick up
their child by 11pm that would
be appreciated.
Teddy Bear Project
Grade 12 students are learning about different cultures by
exchanging various items with students from other countries. This
month they received a package from Taiwan. Students from
Taiwan wrote postcards to our students and sent magnets that
they made of the aboriginal tribes in Taiwan. The students also
sent candy which was tasted by the class. Unfortunately most of the
students in the class thought it tasted like cardboard.
Video Game Competition
On April 24th, Mr. Facchini organized and hosted the 16th annual video game compe>>on. Over 40 students par>cipated in such games as Halo on the xbox 360, Mario Kart on Nintendo Wii and League of Legands on the PC. WOLF Project
On April 29th, Grade 9 students involved in the WOLF project prepared , served and ate lunch with a teacher. Many students learned that teachers don’t live at the school, and we have lives, interests and hobbies outside of school. There was great food and great conversa>on. Thanks to all the WOLF leaders (Mr. McKee, Mr. Boucher, Mr. Mailloux, Mr. Michael, Ms. Gedes) and those who helped with the lunch (Ms. Spencer, Mrs. Reilly and Ms. Kozak).
Link Crew
Bishop is proud to offer the Link Crew program. Bishop Carter is the first in the
Sudbury area to offer this fantastic program to grade nine students. Link Crew is a
high school transition program that welcomes grade nines and makes them feel
comfortable throughout the first year of their high school experience. Built on the
belief that students can help students succeed, Link Crew’s proven high school
transition program trains mentors from your grade eleven and grade twelve classes to
be Link Crew Leaders. As positive role models, Link Crew Leaders are mentors and
student leaders who guide the grade nines to discover what it takes to be successful
during the transition to high school and help facilitate grade nine success.
More and more studies show that if students have a positive experience their first year in
high school, their chance for success increases dramatically. Link Crew provides the
structure for grade nine students to receive support and guidance from senior students who
have been through the challenges that high school poses, and understand that the transition
to a larger school can sometimes be overwhelming.
All leaders chosen from the program will be in training sessions at the KillarneyShebanoning Outdoor Education Centre on May 21st. Link Crew leaders along with
Student Council members will participate in a day of adventure and team building which
will prepare them for the upcoming academic school year.

Message to Graduating Students
You have two short months left in your
high school career. Most of you are longingly
looking forward to graduation and moving on
with the rest of your life. I want to remind
you, however, that this is not the time to let
up. You still have a number of courses that
you must pass to be eligible to graduate with
your class. In order to walk across the stage
you must have your 30 credits, 40 hours of
community service and a pass on the literacy
test. When colleges/universities/future
employers look at your final transcript, they
want to see that you have put forth a concerted
effort right up to the completion of the
program.
Change in Staff
We would like to welcome Ms. Scola
who will be replacing Ms. Langlois and
Ms. McNab who will be replacing
Mrs. Dickieson to our staff for the rest
of the semester. We would also like to
wish Ms. Langlois and Mrs. Dickieson
best wishes as they are expecting new
additions to their families in May.
We would also like to welcome Mrs.
Thompson who will be working in the
student success room. Her role is to
support students in their classroom work
and to help each student succeed at
Bishop.

(the worst), lost lines, a small part
support group meeting that runs out
of donuts, and a director whose
addiction to coffee nearly derails the
entire show.

boys soccer team (coach Mr. Facchini) are
looking to bring home their first title. With
several returning players and a strong
coaching staff, the boys definitely have a
shot.
100th Anniversary of
Vimy Ridge
How exciting! In 2017, Gator
students will have the opportunity
to relive the battles of both World
Wars. The battle of Vimy Ridge
may have happened many
decades ago but its legacy still
lives on. April 9th, 2017, will
mark the 100th anniversary of the
most important battle for all
Canadians! Let’s commemorate
the sacrifice and contribution
made by brave Canadian soldiers
by visiting all the battle sites.
France, Belgium, Netherlands,
Germany, Czech Republic and
Poland! This custom made tour
will give your child the
opportunity to visit key sites of
the First and Second World War
while still experiencing Europe’s
most famous landmarks such as
the Eiffel Tower, the Anne Frank
House, the KGB Museum and the

GATORS ON THE GO
Bishop students have been “on the go”
and visiting different locations to take
learning outside the classroom.
Anthropology/Sociology students visit
Toronto Zoo.
Grade 9 students at Laurentian University and learnt
about keeping the Earth green during Earth Day.
Thinkfast 2015
Our Annual Development and Peace Thinkfast fundraiser was another great success! On April 24th, students
from Bishop A Carter CSS and Marymount Academy once again committed to fasting for 24hours to raise
awareness and funds for an issue of social justice. The theme of this year's fast was "Hunger: Fasting and
Feasting". Students had the opportunity to explore this theme through games, activities, prayers, and
action! New this year, and a wonderful extension to the annual event, was having our Grade 12 Religion
students leading most of the activities. They prepared their events in their class and then led the fasting
participants through the activities that evening. It made for a wonderful blend of younger students and older
students working and learning together! In total, we raised over $500 for Development and Peace initiatives
around the world! Many thanks to all of our participants for their contribution to this great cause!

Waterloo Math Contest
Congratula*ons to our students who par*cipated in this year's University of Waterloo Mathema*cs compe**on. This annual event had just under 77000 students in just over 2900 high schools from around the world compe*ng against one another by comple*ng grade appropriate math tests. Again this year, under the tutelage of Mrs. Pardoe, we had several students who excelled at this pres*gious interna*onal compe**on. Mathieu Carriere, Jeﬀrey Franklin and Ryan Henderson competed in the grade 9 Pascal compe**on. Alex Gardner competed in the grade 10 Cayley compe**on. Devon Gavan, Braeden Neuts, Jacob Perdicou and Brian Piche competed in the grade 11 Fermat compe**on. We are very excited to announce that Jeﬀrey Franklin and Alex Gardner each placed in the top 25% of all compe*tors from around the world in their respec*ve events! Shed for Sale
It’s a liquida*on sale in Mr. McKee’s grade 10 Construc*on Technology class as the students have just completed the construc*on of a very spacious shed. This shed must SELL! SELL! SELL! in order to make room for their next project which will take them down a very diﬀerent path as they construct a cedar strip canoe.
