Attracting backyard birds
DARLENE RECOMMENDS NATURAL NESTING MATERIAL
While dryer lint was once thought a good choice for nesting material,
it is not ideal for the Pacific Northwest since it absorbs moisture.
Natural fibers repel water, keeping vulnerable nestlings dry and warm
throughout our cold and wet spring. Try Pygora Fleece ($5.99), Best
Nest Builder ($10.99) or Hummer Helper ($12.99).

Spring has Sprung!
So has Nesting Season
for the Birds...
A SIMPLE RECIPE TO MAKE YOUR BACKYARD MORE ATTRACTIVE
TO BIRDS: ADD WATER! Position a birdbath near a tree with overhanging
branches so birds have a place to perch and preen after bathing. Keep it
clear of dense shrubbery so predators cannot hide and surprise bathing birds.
Moving water increases birds’ interest and foils mosquitoes, so consider a
mister or dripper ($44.99 – $59.99) or a Water Wiggler ($39.99).
THE WONDERFUL SQUIRREL BUSTER FAMILY
These four patented squirrel-proof bird feeders
have sustained consistently high ratings with our
customers for years! The three offspring of the
original lifetime-warranted Squirrel Buster Plus
($99.99) are equally effective: the Squirrel Buster
Mini ($29.99), Standard ($37.99), Classic ($59.99).
Watching birds raise young right
in your own yard is lots of fun!

HOST HUMMERS THIS SUMMER
 Plant brightly colored, tubular flowers like fuchsias, salvias and
columbines.
SHOPPING AT ITS BEST
 Choose a low-maintenance, high-activity hummingbird feeder like this
U.S.-made, lifetime-warranted, dripless Hummzinger Highview (shown
right, $27.99).
 Position feeders close to your windows -- hummers aren’t shy. But they
are territorial! Place more feeders around your home (but out of sight
from each other) to give more hummingbirds a chance to feed Be
patient, as it can take a while for birds to find newly placed feeders.
20% OFF ALL WIND CHIMES THRU May 10th Wind Chime Central is an accurate description
for our shops since no one else in town has all the brands we carry! We’re sure you’ll find
something just right for Mom ($10.99-$449.99). See back page of this newsletter for details.
 Use clear nectar mixes or make your own. Stop in for a free recipe!
Red dye as well as organic, raw, or alternative sugars can be harmful.
 As days get warmer, replace nectar more frequently (every 3 – 5 days)
and rinse it thoroughly every time. If mold or algae is growing, change your nectar more often and deep clean
with a mild dish soap then rinse well. We have all manner of brushes and accessories to make hard-to-reach areas
easier to clean!
NEW! HUM BUTTON Once you have established a hummingbird
feeding station, try to bring those hummers up close and personal with
this hand-held, one-nectar-port feeder! Hold out a Hum Button in the palm
of your hand, and wait (shown left, $5.99).
What does it take to get Audubon Platinum Wildlife Certification? Planning,
projects and patience! We started with a 60 x 100 foot long grass backyard that was
only good for playing volleyball. With a layout design from my coworker Judy and
our willingness to tackle projects, we started. We planted lots of native plants that
provided food and shelter. Mountain Ash and Huckleberry are two of my favorites.
We got rid of a lot of grass and a few invasive species. We constructed a water
feature in the form of a small pond with a 3-tiered waterfall to provide great sound
and bathing areas for birds. We set up some bird and squirrel feeding stations. Then we added a couple of great features
for the family -- a gazebo, casita (small house for yoga or reading) and a patio area for outdoor summer dinners. We
placed nest boxes for chickadees and nuthatches and some housing for our wonderful mason bees.
Once everything filled in it was time to do some garden tours to show off how beautiful a wildlife-friendly yard can be!
Visit Audubon’s website for details on how to become certified.

Spring 2015
Spring has Sprung!
So has Nesting Season
for the Birds...
A SIMPLE RECIPE TO MAKE YOUR BACKYARD MORE ATTRACTIVE
TO BIRDS: ADD WATER! Position a birdbath near a tree with overhanging
branches so birds have a place to perch and preen after bathing. Keep it
clear of dense shrubbery so predators cannot hide and surprise bathing birds.
Moving water increases birds’ interest and foils mosquitoes, so consider a
mister or dripper ($44.99 – $59.99) or a Water Wiggler ($39.99).
THE WONDERFUL SQUIRREL BUSTER FAMILY
These four patented squirrel-proof bird feeders
have sustained consistently high ratings with our
customers for years! The three offspring of the
original lifetime-warranted Squirrel Buster Plus
($99.99) are equally effective: the Squirrel Buster
Mini ($29.99), Standard ($37.99), Classic ($59.99).
Watching birds raise young right
in your own yard is lots of fun!
